Toaster recommendation

My toaster has just given up, it is a Russell Hobbs. To be perfectly honest I have never been that thrilled with it, it was rather hit and miss regarding toasting. Can any wise Gransnetters recommend a good reliable toaster that will take thick slices of bread. Thank you.

I have had my Dualit toaster for 25 years.
I wouldn’t have any other.
I’m about to buy one for our holiday let.

I never had a toaster. Can’t bear a lot of stuff on the worktops.
But we went through a period of about six weeks during the first lockdown without a cooker, so I bought a four slice SMEG mainly because it looks nice, but now I’m hooked, and I don’t know how I managed without it.

The best toaster I had was a kitchaid one. Lost custody when my ex husband took it!

Look at the reviews on Amazon it will give the opinion of thousands of people.

We've got a cheap Tesco toaster. Does what it said it would do on the box. We've had it 8 years. It sits proudly on the worktop (I'm not a toaster snob), takes 4 slices of thick bread, and if I flatten them, will even take my croissants! Job done.

Like Nongran I have found that cheap toasters are just as reliable and do a good job ( ditto kettles.) I don’t even know the make of toaster we now have ( or kettle) but paying more doesn’t mean anything.

I saw a clip where a Sage toaster was tested. It was very expensive but some features appealed to me and I chucked out my old cheap one which was getting dangerous and bought it.

It has wide slits and even a "crumpet" setting. I have always used toastie bags to prevent the crumbs falling in into the bottom. The only nitpick I have is that there is no way to lock the sliding toaster grade button into position and that it is too big to hold with one hand. It needs a handle somewhere to make it easier to lift. The holders for the cable underneath are also not really suited for the job. However, it is a sturdy and versatile toaster and I am particularly pleased with the "a bit more" and "a quick look" settings.

Russell Hobbs Inspire is a Which? Best Buy affordable toaster.
I bought one for my son when he moved and he is very happy with it.

I have a basic 2 slice toaster, had it for years. I pop it in the cupboard when not in use.

Myh toaster stays, ready for use, on my worktop. Can never be bothered with machines that need taking out of cupboards and then plugging in. Like them plugged in and quick and easy to use.
I only need a 2-slice toaster (just me here). Like one that has a 'lift' machanism for things like crumpets, begals etc. Also one with an easy to get at and clean, crumb tray. Apart from those two things, I want one in black (all items above my worktop are black, those below it are white). With those three things in mind I then look for the cheapest.

Our Russel Hobbs toaster is 30 years old! Still going strong. When I bought it I expected a couple of years use, like the previous ones!

Dualit without question. Probably the only toaster that can be repaired, like all their products.

Dualit for ever! We have had our 3 slot (2 + toastie) Dualit since time immemorial - and I have repaired it twice. First when one of the heating elements failed, and again when the clockwork timing mechanism stopped. The parts were relatively cheap, and it was the work of minutes to fit them. It also toasts beautifully evenly.

what's wrong with having a toaster visible in the kitchen ?
sounds baffling to me.
like saying seeing a basin in the bathroom makes the place look untidy; or taps maybe ?

by the way, how did you manage without one.
did you use the grill for toasting.
i can remember the old toasting fork in front of the fire.

Welbeck
Well in my case , it’s not so much not wanting it on display, as limited space.
We previously had an aga to cook toast.

So annoying, I had to get out of bed and see what make my toaster was! Bought for it’s pretty light grey colour with darker shade kettle it’s a Haden and works just fine.

Just bought a new toaster to replace a very old one which didn't toast a full slice .The new one is a Breville which accepts upright slices ( not horizontal ) and toasts the full slice It is stainless steel and quite large.

I was looking for a new toaster during lockdown so I looked on Amazon. I found the perfect one, checked the price, £500 plus!!! Needless to say I ended up with another cheapie, it's just toast after all.

allsortsofbags Sun 30-May-21 11:28:09

Dualit for me, had it about 20 years now, still going strong.

libra10 Sun 30-May-21 11:28:26

Many years ago, I won a Dualit toaster in a competition.

We have had it for many years, and it makes the best toast ever.

Although expensive, would definitely recommend.

Dualit

Amalegra Sun 30-May-21 14:44:20

As several others here say, Dualit. I’ve had mine oner 20 years and expect it to go on for a while yet. Especially as I love its retro peppermint green colour!

Doodledog Sun 30-May-21 15:10:18

We also have a Dualit.

They do last forever - ours is at least 22 years old - but they can end up a bit like Trigger's broom. ?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 30-May-21 15:15:00

Another vote for Dualit.
