As everyone’s idea of a homely house is very different , what is it in your opinion that makes a home homely! For me it’s somewhere that’s clean, comfy sofas lots cushions, pets, fresh flowers, music on, tea on tap, somewhere you can just relax without the worry of someone swiping your cup away as soon as you’ve put it down, a calm house, but one that has lots of laughter,
Lots of books for me and not clinically spartan. I have a dear friend, also sister in law and I never feel truly comfortable as both are very houseproud and I’m glad to get back to my ‘eclectic’ surroundings.
My beautiful rescue Yorkshire terrier made my house a home. He made sure that it was a cleaner home too as he insisted, through various means , that I mop most of the hard floors at least twice a day. I would gladly take up my mop again to have him back as the house seems so dull and empty without him .
I think, as a visitor, the 'homeliness' comes from the people who live there making you feel welcome and comfortable. So if I have to avoid pet hair or move stuff to sit down, then I don't feel welcome. If no-one offers refreshment, or whips my cup away before I've finished, or tuts at my biscuit crumbs on the floor, then I don't feel at home. I like a house that feels lived in, family photos on the mantelpiece, books/magazines lying on a table but not covering it, children's toys in one corner but not all over the floor.
Our house is untidy but clean, and i always love coming back to it. So thats what makes it homely for me. First thing i do is put the kettle on and get cosy.
A place where friends and family feel relaxed. I agree tea on tap, biscuits in the tin. No one fussing over things. Dogs if required. Love me love my dogs.
I like clean and reasonably tidy. In other people’s houses I like it warm but not too hot, books, pictures and comfy chairs. I’m not keen on pale carpets and furnishings which make me feel on edge, however stylish they may be. And I hate having to take my shoes off in case I’ve got holes in my socks or tights.
I like it warm, peaceful and having my dog as company. When my last one died I said that was it no more, I lasted 4 months before I rescued another. Living alone the companionship I have with a pet is great, it nice to have something else in the house. I keep my house and dog clean so no dog whiffs in my home and I would know as my friends promised that they would tell me. I also like lit candles in summer or a fire burning on colder nights as it makes it feel cosy.
