Washing pods

When there are a few laundry pods left in the bottom of the plastic box they come in , has anyone found they just leak and go all mushy and sticky,? they are virtually useless,I have found this with cheap ones eg from Lidl to more expensive like Bold , Ariel Fairy,
I am thinking of going back to liquid detergent or powder,

After once forgetting to put in the detergent and the washing coming out clean I now use very little powder and soda crystals. The manufacturers recommend far too much. I have never used pods for that reasons.

That’s because basically a washing machine is only doing what our very far back ancestors were doing only in a river bashing clothes on a rock ( that’s now the drum) water running through the clothes taking away the grime.
Nothings new, is it.
I learnt that when I worked for Hoover.

I have swapped over to using Eco Eggs, they are fantastic. No more laundry liquid. The egg is filled with little scented beads and will last for over 70 washes. Only thing I use now.

Another shout out for Eco Eggs here. Brilliant! And no residue left anywhere.

I use an eco washing liquid (Ecover or Method). No nasty chemicals and the bottles are made from recycled plastic that can be recycled again. It’s very economical, as I find I only need to use half the recommended amount (we don’t live in a hard water area). I hadn’t heard of washing sheets. Are they as bad for the environment as dryer sheets?

I was told by a washing machine engineer never to use washing powder because it causes a build up of gunk in the area behind the drawer which you put the powder in.I think it's a case of swings and roundabouts

Using washing sheets too, so easy.

Years ago one of these pods burst as I was bending down to put it in the machine. Excruciating pain in my eye and ,despite thorough rinsing, a damaged cornea which took months of treatment to rectify. I have never used them since and use liquid instead. The other thing people complain about is they don’t seem to dissolve fully in cooler washes which were all being encouraged to use now

I take the drawer out and clean around it anyway whenever I clean the filter. Doesn't everyone?? Not that it gets dirty anymore these days.

I use Soap nuts from ecozone , take a bit of trial and error to work out how many to use very hard water, sprinkle few drops of essential oil on cotton bag before each wash , start on Monday with approx 8 nuts wash towels, bedding do another 2/3 washes rest of week , start fresh following Monday

I've used washing egg pods and they are great. Only thing I missed was the nice smell of clean washing

Candelle Mon 17-Jan-22 15:10:32

I use liquids as I was advised by a washing machine engineer that they were best for the machine. It seems that there are varying view on what is best!

As an aside, I use three types of washing liquid: one for coloured clothes, one for whites and one for dark/black clothes. My friends express amazement at my sorting clothes into colours as they wash everything together in one wash.

I just wondered what others do on GN?

Theoddbird Mon 17-Jan-22 15:29:23

I use an eco egg. Works brilliantly on the shortest 30 degree wash.

AreWeThereYet Mon 17-Jan-22 16:32:52

Candelle You're not alone - I sort my wash and I expect many others do too. Whites, blacks and light and dark colours depending on how much there is wash.

Anyone use an Ecoegg with very hard water?

HazelGreen Mon 17-Jan-22 16:49:38

Yes powder for me thought the brand I use can be hard to find. I heard it was better in soft water area. Also I like to decide how little or much detergent my wash needs. I also sort whites and coloureds and have two powders for them. I have given up trying to find simple powder for dishwasher.

I started using the laundry tablets that contain liquid when I had a new washing machine as I hated the mess the powder made in the dispenser, I’ve never seen or heard of laundry sheets, are they any good I used an eco egg once and thought it was useless.

I put my powder straight into the drum under the washing - soda crystals go on the drawer.
When I used liquid the drawer often needed cleaning - it would get very manky. It never does any more.

I do not use pods. They are expensive and as you have damp hands in the laundry it all to easy to get them wet. I use powder it is cheaper and goes further.

Oopsadaisy1 Mon 17-Jan-22 17:07:21

I used pods but I found them stuck to some of the clothes in a cold wash, so I use liquid, it’s a 2 in 1 liquid and I use it for all of my wash. If anything has a stain on it I drop some on and rub it in before the item goes into the wash.

Cross posts re balls. Are you satisfied with the results against stains?

In a word, no. I’ve found they just don’t work for me. I think the problem is that we live in a really hard water area. I still use mine when I do a wash for towels and cloths as I’m trying to limit the amount of chemicals. Looking at the other comments, think I might try the sheets as I don’t want to store big boxes of powder.

Same goes for me. Still use the egg for things that don’t need heavy stain removal eg towels

Yes, sorry this is my reply so possibly a bit repetitive to anyone reading down. I live in a really hard water area, the eco egg just doesn’t work on everyday washing, eg the dirt under socks when you’ve been walking around the kitchen floor just doesn’t shift, but fine on things like towels, dressing gowns etc.

Boyzone Mon 17-Jan-22 19:43:08

I don’t use pods/tablets either but my mother did and I use the little net bags to house block soap to use in the shower!
Also sort my wash into whites/light colours/dark colours/his black undies and socks and my dark undies and socks. The latter go in the tumble dryer as mentioned before. As I don’t want visitors to view my g strings drying on the rads ?

Kim19 Mon 17-Jan-22 21:02:09

I mix co!ours and whites together. No problem thus far.

Eco Eggs against stains. No problems, they work for me. I first saw them on a TV programme about saving money etc, the household had to was football kit for a whole team, came out beautifully clean. I am very pleased so far and will continue to use them.

Petalpop Tue 18-Jan-22 10:26:59

I have never used them. I use eco washing liquid.

Chestnut Tue 18-Jan-22 14:15:05

I use an Eco Egg and if there is an actual stain then I just squirt some Vanish on the stain before washing. I am happy to be saving on storage, cost and environment. They work fine for normal washing but I doubt someone with football loving children would find them enough. I don't know though.

Tip: if your towels come out crispy then give them a 'crack' (a quick hard shake like cracking a whip). That softens them up.
