Artex Ceiling Love

We have little spikes of Artex on the ceilings of our 1979 home. I absolutely love the ceilings but everyone seems to think the obvious course of action is to smooth plaster over them!
Is there anything in your home that you love but that wider society appears to loathe?

I am quite fond of wood hip and textured wallpaper ! I can’t understand the campaign against it

Naninka Sun 20-Feb-22 10:59:56

It certainly hides a multitude of sins, aggie!! smile

I have chair back and arm rest covers on my three piece suite (used to be called antimicassars years ago).

In fact, I found it really hard to find suitable ones, and I started a thread on here asking for suggestions. Oh dear, some of the replies! “Haven’t seen these for years, only used by my granny etc”.

Well, I like them! They are a nice cream colour, in a sturdy cotton fabric with lace edging. Help to keep the arms and backs clean and not too worn.

Sometimes, Granny knew best.

Absolutely! They're your chairs, after all. x

I have chair back. They are lovely embroidered ones that came in a fabric lot I bought at an auction. In one case they protect the back of a chair from fading in the sunlight and in the othercase they came with some exquisite embroidered cushion covers.

Fortunately my living room furniture is all Victorian, so they are completely in keeping with the room.

My late parents also had blown vinyl wallpaper and ‘Artexed’ walls in some rooms in swirly-whirly patterns. My ceilings are smooth, but the lounge has several hairline cracks which are quite noticeable (to me) but wouldn’t be on textured plaster.

I agree with Georgesgran in that Artex can hide imperfections. We've been advised not to mess with our 50 year old ceilings as they may contain small amounts of asbestos.

A lot of these things are coming back into vogue. My DDs have put fireplaces back that our generation removed.

MayBee70 Sun 20-Feb-22 12:59:54

I don’t like textured wallpaper but do like woodchip. Even though I have awful memories of removing it from the hallway when we moved here. Not knowing about steamers etc I used a cheese grater. I have an artex ceiling in my kitchen. I’ve been told it can’t be plastered over but needs plaster board putting over it.

There's Artex and then there's Artex. We've removed most ours because it makes the rooms look lower and darker. The main bedroom was removed when the ceiling was repaired and I couldn't believe the difference it made. I think it's an optical illusion caused by your eye moving towards the shadows and dips in the Artex. In our previously quite dark bedroom the light now spreads right across the ceiling from the window, making the room appear brighter.

We didn’t move into our house until all ceilings had been flattened!
Each room was worse than the last, swirls and whirls everywhere! The rooms definitely looked bigger and brighter when it was finished.

Artex is horrible imho, but whatever floats your boat. I like retro wallpaper and bright coloured mid century modern textiles.

SueDonim Sun 20-Feb-22 14:50:51

We had a ceiling re-artexed when we moved to a house and found the ceiling irreparably stained. The guy that did it made it look like a snow scene from an iced Christmas cake. There was also the added spice when we were chatting to him that he dropped the info that he’d been in prison for murder! We decided not to argue with him about the finish on the ceiling. . ?

I have to say my DM has some lovely Artex ceilings. Her house is quite old and the Artex covers the cracks. Part of it is flat with a design around the lights and it's quite striking.

I remember having those plastic (or styrofoam) tiles for ages on my bedroom ceiling when I was younger. Anyone still got those?

I do love nice wallpapers but I like to change things around from time to time and I'm too lazy to deal with wallpapers.

MissAdventure Sun 20-Feb-22 17:12:44

I have wood chip paper, swirly artex, and a serving hatch. smile
I can't afford to redo any of it, so I just go with the flow.

nanaK54 Sun 20-Feb-22 17:22:31

We have 'swirly artex' on our dining room ceiling, I rather like it

MissAdventure Sun 20-Feb-22 17:27:28

Someone had a go, freehand, with the artex here.
With very limited success, by the looks of it.

Juggernaut Sun 20-Feb-22 18:04:01

When we moved into this bungalow, the ceilings were all either Artexed or covered in Polystyrene tiles, so it was not only ugly, but dangerous too!
The dining room Polystyrene tiles went first, followed by the kitchen artex, sitting room artex, hall poly tiles, bathroom artex (that was truly hideous!) main bedroom artex will be next, and then we'll just have 3 rooms left.
It's been a long, messy and expensive job to get it all sorted, but the difference is remarkable, so well worth it!
Just after the sitting room ceiling had been made lovely, we met the man we bought the bungalow from, and on hearing that we were altering all the ceilings, said "Oh, what pattern Artex are you having done"?
I almost choked!

Coastpath Sun 20-Feb-22 18:16:30

Eek yes those polystyrene ceiling tiles are so dangerous.

Years ago our neighbour had a chip pan fire and he had those tiles on his kitchen ceiling!! My husband heard the neighbour shouting and ran round to help - he said the tiles were melting and dripping fire everywhere.

AreWeThereYet Sun 20-Feb-22 20:18:01

The guy that did it made it look like a snow scene from an iced Christmas cake.

SueDonim In my head you have snowmen hanging from your ceiling, along with the Alps and a few icicles and robins.

???

SueDonim Sun 20-Feb-22 21:19:49

And a few holly sprigs for authenticity, Arewethereyet! grin We kept thinking all the peaks would shrink when it dried out but they never did. Like I said, you don’t argue with a murderer! ?

paddyann54 Sun 20-Feb-22 22:00:35

we've been in this house since it was built and it came with Artex ceilings. We've had all the downstairs ones replastered but left upstairs as it isn't offensive just small uniform pattern .I do remember paying an exorbitant amount have Artex done when it was first fashionable

Callistemon21 Sun 20-Feb-22 22:49:28

Same here, Paddyann, upstairs is just stippled, not huge swirls like downstairs which we did have replastered.
I do like to 'Artex' the Christmas cake

and a serving hatch
Oh, are they passé now? I find mine very useful.

J52 Sun 20-Feb-22 23:32:03

Don’t like to upset anyone, but Artex can be made of Asbestos!
