We didn’t move into our house until all ceilings had been flattened!
Each room was worse than the last, swirls and whirls everywhere! The rooms definitely looked bigger and brighter when it was finished.

There's Artex and then there's Artex. We've removed most ours because it makes the rooms look lower and darker. The main bedroom was removed when the ceiling was repaired and I couldn't believe the difference it made. I think it's an optical illusion caused by your eye moving towards the shadows and dips in the Artex. In our previously quite dark bedroom the light now spreads right across the ceiling from the window, making the room appear brighter.

I don’t like textured wallpaper but do like woodchip. Even though I have awful memories of removing it from the hallway when we moved here. Not knowing about steamers etc I used a cheese grater. I have an artex ceiling in my kitchen. I’ve been told it can’t be plastered over but needs plaster board putting over it.

A lot of these things are coming back into vogue. My DDs have put fireplaces back that our generation removed.

I agree with Georgesgran in that Artex can hide imperfections. We've been advised not to mess with our 50 year old ceilings as they may contain small amounts of asbestos.

My late parents also had blown vinyl wallpaper and ‘Artexed’ walls in some rooms in swirly-whirly patterns. My ceilings are smooth, but the lounge has several hairline cracks which are quite noticeable (to me) but wouldn’t be on textured plaster.

I have chair back. They are lovely embroidered ones that came in a fabric lot I bought at an auction. In one case they protect the back of a chair from fading in the sunlight and in the othercase they came with some exquisite embroidered cushion covers.

Fortunately my living room furniture is all Victorian, so they are completely in keeping with the room.

Absolutely! They're your chairs, after all. x

I have chair back and arm rest covers on my three piece suite (used to be called antimicassars years ago).

In fact, I found it really hard to find suitable ones, and I started a thread on here asking for suggestions. Oh dear, some of the replies! “Haven’t seen these for years, only used by my granny etc”.

Well, I like them! They are a nice cream colour, in a sturdy cotton fabric with lace edging. Help to keep the arms and backs clean and not too worn.

Sometimes, Granny knew best.

I am quite fond of wood hip and textured wallpaper ! I can’t understand the campaign against it

We have little spikes of Artex on the ceilings of our 1979 home. I absolutely love the ceilings but everyone seems to think the obvious course of action is to smooth plaster over them!
Is there anything in your home that you love but that wider society appears to loathe?
