Glancing at some properties for sale locally I was struck by the amount of grey used in colour schemes; widening my search area (you can see I wasn't too busy that afternoon) almost every house was painted grey outside, or inside, or had a grey kitchen, and quite a few had newly installed windows with grey frames. It is a smart neutral that can look good with all sorts of brighter shades, but the almost universal sloshing on of grey paint came as a real surprise. What happens when everyone suddenly gets bored with it? A tin of paint will sort out some schemes, but the windows, kitchens, bathrooms tiled in sombre shades...?

I actually think that grey and pale pink or blue go well together in clothing, say like a school uniform.
But the grey plague has spread to other innocent items to name a few: cooking utensils, cutlery handles, washing up bowls/drainers etc. mop buckets, washing baskets,
Honestly I have trawled shops and the internet in the hope of (good quality) items of the above. In say vibrant orange/terracotta just anything to liven up the kitchen.
I can’t stand anything that’s so stylish that it hurts and I’m afraid to use it for it’s purpose
Please no more grey sheets??
Nothing grey in my house! One example is my downstairs loo which is Barbara Cartland pink. Other bathroom is red and black. I recently had my dining room redecorated and it is a mixture of apricot, green and blue. Hall and landing are sunshine yellow. I’m not into subtle.

I would love to have a nose around your house!
Lovely!!!
I love seeing other peoples houses.
Interesting how different countries like different styles. When we went to Norway we felt we were going back to the 60s with all the fussy wallpaper and purples. You don’t have wallpaper here anymore, guess we are fairly bland these days though our house has loads of wood panelling. You don’t have to do anything except dust it now and then.
When people come in and say my house is like a show home I’ll know what they are actually saying ?
I think that, like most trends, the current grey everywhere, or grey with navy paintwork/furniture looks great when it's new, but will become very dated when the manufacturers want people to buy new.
We are in at the 'quote' stage of getting our hall stairs and landing decorated, and I'm still unsure of what to do with it. It is large, with a return on the stairs and high ceilings, so whatever we do on the walls (and floors) there will be a lot of it. It is likely to have to last for ages (it was last decorated about 20 years ago?) so I don't want it to date too soon. As it's a high-traffic area it needs to be hard wearing and probably fairly neutral.
Doodledog ours is also large I need a cathedral brush to get the cobwebs down. It’s painted plain and we don’t know what to do with it. I’d love to get a designer in to do it. We’ve been in 3 years. I like the colour that’s on but don’t know what else to do.
Doodledog I put a picture of my hall and staircases on another thread about Estate Agents last week. Because ours was largish and meandered off round the house, a fairly neutral colour worked best and all woodwork in white.
Stunning Josieann
Not keen on everything grey but preferable to the beige.
That's lovely, Josieann. The white paint everywhere works really well.
Do you have two staircases, like the song in Fiddler on the Roof??
Different greys have different moods. I once did a south facing bedroom in a pale grey and when we opened the curtains in the morning the sunshine would make the walls glow. It was a lovely start to the day. Not too keen on the more muddy greys but even those can look very smart in some rooms.
JosieAnn our hall is like a smaller version of yours with the white and wood floors. Except we have a black handrail on the stairs. It used to have a lot more colour and after the 'whitening' it was amazing how much bigger and more open it looked.
My hall is grey with white wood work and white upcycled shelving units and a white whatnot with green plants love it
My front door will soon be a very nice blue grey just waiting for the weather to improve

The living area is a riot! Not to everyone’s taste I know?
To quote Kenny Everett "All done in the best possible taste."
Its like everything - you can have too much of a good thing.
Grey everywhere is like its predecessor, cream - remember the cream dream and everything covered in cream? I actually like both grey and cream, but when a room/house is cream/grey - and nothing but grey/cream it is so b-o-o-o-o-ring.
I have painted a bathroom grey but with peach toels and bath mat to provid the contrast. In other rooms cream walls have soft furnishing variously of red, pink, yellow and
You have all made me think. I am having to have a new utility room to hide all the pipework from a new boiler. I have chosen Dove grey units, it's a dark room facing north with a small window. What colour would you paint the walls?
Also, the loo is in a windowless small room off the utility, one DD is daring me to have reflective colourful wallpaper, any suggestions?
Our house is a few hundred years old farm builing with beams and was all Farrow and ball dark red, mustard and pea green. A carpet fitter said it looked like a brothel and the decorator we got said go for calico top to bottom and gradually change which we did and are doing . I think my style is called "Shabby Chic"though as the other daughter said a bit more chic wouldn't come amiss.
Ideas greatfully received.
I think dove grey and white looks nice. Can't offer suggestions for reflective colourful wallpaper I'm afraid!!!
Thank you both for two really good ideas. We did put washable reflective white paint in the bathrooms and it really lifted them and I do like Duck egg blue. I went for grey because a lot of my appliances are now grey and the kitchen is cream. I need to get some match pots.I love your room merlotgran the colours really do tone.
Merlotgran in our downstairs bathroom we paired Egyptian cotton with Overtly Olive and it looks great together. Your room looks gorgeous.
