House and home

Where does the dirt lie in and around your home?

I thought my house and garden were quite clean and tidy, always a few corners needing attention but the overall standards seemed fine to me. I've just finished watering some plant pots on the back doorstep using the hose, and absentmindedly ran the hose over the plastic tufted door mat.................and was truly shocked by the amount of dirt that came out of it. It didn't even look dirty. I usually turn it over and bash it against the step every week or so but haven't washed it before now as it looked quite clean. I've hosed it for 20 minutes full blast and there is still dirt washing out but I've had to leave it for now.

Has anyone else had a shock to discover something they thought was quite clean but in fact was filthy?

Baggytrazzas

Workmen must see absolute horrors in our homes.

I did apologise to the washing machine repairman

Anyway, I'm saving water by not doing any washing because the washing machine currently has no door ?

Does anyone want to start a thread about how excited they are about a forthcoming holiday via a long haul flight, asking maybe for tips about what to see and do there, only for folk to pile in with lectures about how harmful air travel is for the planet, how irresponsible, what is the OP thinking etc etc ?

Honestly, poor Baggytrazzas
She started what she thought would be a lighthearted, interesting thread only to have a barrage of lectures for daring to use a hose in soggy Scotland.

Doodledog Thu 11-Aug-22 00:06:39

Agreed, JenniferEccles. This has been a very odd thread.

JenniferEccles Thu 11-Aug-22 00:33:03

It is isn’t it Doodledog and it happens on all sorts of threads!
I’ve just glanced at one about healthy eating featuring someone called Tim Spector.

The poor chap had apparently mentioned (or maybe filmed) a holiday in Spain, so of course that was immediately jumped on (“doesn’t he realise not everyone can afford holidays in Spain”), then he dared to recommend avocados which drew similar criticism.

Honestly what CAN be talked about on Gransnet these days without incurring wrath?

eazybee Thu 11-Aug-22 07:37:31

No.
I could not imagine that in the 21st century people would be interested in the amount of dirt discovered on a doormat, (purpose: the cleaning of dirty outdoor footwear ).
Clearly I was wrong.

Housework is a low priority for me. I am tidy though. I’m unlikely to say in my last days ‘I wish I had done more housework’!

PS I do have a cleaner once a month.

But if people get pounced on for starting threads they won’t bother, and the place will grind to a halt. It’s really off-putting to start a thread and have people criticise it. Disagreeing with a point of view is one thing, but picking on the premise of the thread is another. It’s happening a lot though - there does seem to be something in the water just now (see what I did there??).

I'm sure Baggytrazzas is sorry she started this thread. wonder do some folk answer friends in the way they answer OP.

In real life I would have been far more vocal to a friend who had a hose on a plastic mat for 20 minutes.

nadateturbe Thu 11-Aug-22 09:04:33

Monica if your friend asked a lighthearted question, you would give her a lecture. Who needs a friend like that?

Wheniwasyourage Thu 11-Aug-22 10:13:57

Going back to the theme of the thread, I was very glad that I moved the old washing machine the day before the new one was due to be delivered. It took me some considerable time to clean under it. Then I moved it back into place and so when the men moved it to take it away there was very little that had been trapped underneath it for 16 years, but still some in spite of my cleaning. blush

Before anyone likes to have a go at Baggytrazzas.. For hosing a mat, just remember the Water companies sold off by the Tories , are leaking water by the gallon ! Just saying !

Why are folk so judgemental on this forum? It used to be a nice place to swap posts or ask advice with friendly folk. I would really hesitate to ask for advice on here now . Let’s be Jim me to one another please? You don’t know what other folk are going through

Nannapat1 Thu 11-Aug-22 11:54:49

A post about 'secret' dirt and all these comments about hoses and water wastage. Wow!

Probably because it makes people feel good that they’re doing something “right” or at least not doing something so terribly “wrong”. Life’s a bit grim at the moment so saying anything that makes us feel better about ourselves, especially if it touches on the environment is a chance not to be missed.

Alioop Thu 11-Aug-22 12:15:14

Its always in and behind my radiators. I've a long dust brush for radiators and stick the hoover pipe in the back of it and still it gathers. Oh and above the kitchen cabinets, hate climbing up there to clean.
I'm sure Baggytrazzas wishes she hadn't bothered today starting a thread. It usually buckets down with rain here in N.Ireland so we are lucky enough not to have water shortages like some other places or meters, well not yet anyway. Maybe if they sort out the leaks and have more water treatment plants it might help folk having to cut down so much.

BlueBalou Thu 11-Aug-22 12:15:35

☹️ it’s horrible isn’t it when too many threads get derailed but antagonistic GNers jumping on, it really makes me wonder why some have to be like this. It really puts me off reading or contributing.
My horror spots are under the big fridge freezer (absolutely no chance of pulling that out!) , under the cooker and the bottom of the fridge drawer- I am puzzled by the detritus that seems to accumulate there!

Grantanow Thu 11-Aug-22 12:25:52

Hosepipe bands are a way for water companies to shuffle off their responsibilities to build more reservoirs and stop leaks in the mains which far outweigh hosepipe loss. It's a disgraceful monopoly and they should be taken into public ownership but I doubt Liz Truss would want to upset the Tories' rich friends.

Mapleleaf Thu 11-Aug-22 12:50:05

Behind and at the sides of the fridge is a spot that harbours dust, errant frozen peas and crumbs, despite a regular hoover round. It’s a big fridge, though, so only gets pulled out of its housing every so often, hence the build up of the aforementioned. I’m amazed at some of the stuff that hides under it though.
Another place is under the dresser in the kitchen - those pesky daddy long leg type spiders must just hide and watch whilst I dust beneath it and behind it, then out they come building their enormous webs again as soon as my back is turned ??.

Maria59 Thu 11-Aug-22 12:52:44

Calendargirl how would that work in Scotland? Water bill is included in council tax unable to have separate bills

Gabrielle56 Thu 11-Aug-22 13:12:05

Nope. I actively search for debris and dirt! If you can see it it's too late. You're doomed??

The most judgey phrase going " I'm only saying" usually uttered by those who've nowt to contribute?

^I'm not sure why there are so many people on GN that just jump in and scream their unasked for opinions. I hope you don't conduct your face to face conversations in the same manner. Feel free to answer the question posted and contribute to the thread, or move on to something else.
Thanks to the rest of you for your contributions.^

My sentiments too. I have never found this the most friendly of spaces but recently some comments on some threads have been quite spiteful and unpleasant.

To the subject in question: recently I was horrified to see the amount of limescale that had built up at the base of the kettle and its charging stand.
Yesterday, when the decor door to the fridge had to be mended and refitted I was appalled at how dirty both doors were, whereas previously I had fondly imagined that my fridge was clean!

It`s clean dust,i leave well alone, but offer a duster to Mr T if he spots any.
Don`t take things to heart Baggytrazzas, people are brave from a distance.
Thankfully, the majority of Gransnetters are a lovely helpfull bunch, who give good/great and honest advice.
