House and home

Where does the dirt lie in and around your home?

I thought my house and garden were quite clean and tidy, always a few corners needing attention but the overall standards seemed fine to me. I've just finished watering some plant pots on the back doorstep using the hose, and absentmindedly ran the hose over the plastic tufted door mat.................and was truly shocked by the amount of dirt that came out of it. It didn't even look dirty. I usually turn it over and bash it against the step every week or so but haven't washed it before now as it looked quite clean. I've hosed it for 20 minutes full blast and there is still dirt washing out but I've had to leave it for now.

Has anyone else had a shock to discover something they thought was quite clean but in fact was filthy?

I had a massive shock when I had both of my cataracts done last summer. Everything looked grubby. My perfect vision showed up every mark that my damaged eyes had not seen.... ?

Baggytrazzas - Exactly, enjoy your clean mat! People will still use water as they wish even with a water meter, if you're worried you use less...it doesn't turn your water off if you use more than your neighbours! So many judgemental Karens who know best...grrr

I remember that happening when I first got varifocals years ago - it was quite a revelation grin

The muck stays. Life is too short to clean. Apart from essentials. The loo, dishes and clothes and kitchen worktops My muck is mine the mice love it

As a lot of you know, we have just acquired two kittens - a year after our 17 year old cat died. And for most of those years he certainly did not fit into the spaces the kittens are in and out of!

I thought my narrowest feather duster did a good job of dusting down the back of radiators and that the fatter one did just as well dusting behind the washing-machine and freezer.

I have now learned otherwise! Every day, Tigger and Trubel come out from behind something covered in dust bunnies and cobwebs.

What a ridiculous OP. Country (and most of Europe) drying out and your worried about a dirty doormat? I am swaying between anger and incredulity.

In our house it's more a case of where the dust/dirt doesn't lie! We're surrounded by fields, farms and downland so the house is always dusty. Dust and dog hair collects around the edges of the rooms like tumbleweed, and the sofas and recliner usually have enough hair and fluff under them to knit a jumper with! Cobwebs gather in the corners of the rooflights every day and the patio door tracks are never clean. I don't worry about it too much it goes with the territory. It gets cleaned when I'm in the mood and a few days later it will be just as bad again. There's far more interesting things to do than cleaning grin

Central Africa has been drying out for years, I wonder how many cross patches have consciously cut their water usage to help out.

I was bitten on the back of the legs by tiny spiders, on checking the underside of my outdoor wicker chairs I was appalled at the number of webs. Note to self, clean under chairs periodically.

Calendargirl how would that work in Scotland? Water bill is included in council tax unable to have separate bills

I realise Scotland is different. I was referring to England and Wales who don’t charge for installing water meters.

Perhaps if you can suggest a way for the OP to get any spare water she has lying about to the rest of the country and to Europe she can get on the case?

Well said Baggtrazzas.

I've been following Gransnet for a while now but haven't posted before but today I'm so shocked at how mean spirited some people are and I've noticed that it's often the same people who are so unkind!

I've only just, this morning, put a skirt on. We've had lashings of rain and its been cold enough for me to have worn jeans until today. (South Cumbria)
My legs are a whiter than white shade of pale.

Oh please send some darn sarf! What grass is left is yellow and crispy.

I was surprised when the chap pulled my washing machine out (to repair) and found a mummified mouse underneath!
Not half as surprised as the chap who almost had a heart attack!!

I recently went on holiday and while packing looked in a suitcase for a jumper I hadn't seen since last year's camping holiday. I found the jumper complete with nibbled holes and the remains of a mouse! I put poison down early this year as I'd seen a mouse and wondered where they go to die. Now I know! Horrible find!

The least said about behind my cooker when it was pulled out recently the better! And actually the inside of the cooker too, as it’s rarely used now as we use the air fryer and microwave - somehow the inside of the oven was very dusty!

I watched an episode of Filthy House SOS on Demand last night, and the oven had cobwebs in it!

Maria59 Thu 11-Aug-22 16:28:20

Baggytrazzas there is absolutely nothing wrong with you using a hose not using it will not help anyone. Yesterday was very dreich in the western Isles. Some posters should stop being so selfish and send the sun up north!! Might also improve their behaviour if they are less hot and bothered

That's one benefit of having a weed-infested lawn ?

I'd like to thank all of you who have contributed to the post re dirty areas, and to those of you who have offered many words of support both here and via private messages, and on a different thread also.

the rest of you, and you know who you are, can take a hike.

pinkjj27 - I'd respectfully suggest you read the thread before you post otherwise you risk appearing unintelligent.
