Has anyone dared to turn their heating on yet?

It's feeling a lot chillier tonight and the temperature is reading 17.5C in the flat and 16C in the annexe. Normally I would have put my heating on but I'm holding out! I might succumb at 17C and set the heating for 18C. I'm trying to be brave.

Have you switched your heating on yet? Are you holding out a bit longer? What will you set the thermostat for this year?

The heating came on this morning - for about 10 minutes, enough to make the towel rail feel tepid but no more.

I am still having my French windows open all day, open by 10.00am and not closed until after 6.00pm. The back of the house faces south and in the current calm conditions, there is no breeze. the temperature is the same in and out.

I actually got bitten by something when out gardening this afternoon.

An howgate wonder apple fell on my tree today, it weighed 932g, so I made 4 crumbles with topping that I have already made and frozen. They are all in the oven now, I decided that evening is quite a good time to be having heat from the oven

I have a l sleeved cotton t shirt on and tbh am feeling a chill down my back. Bit by bit, the cold weather is approaching

That's my sort of energy efficiency, Karmalady, good (homegrown) food and heating combined!

My biggest apple this year isn't worth picking, so I am envious too grin

my first time growing howgate wonder. It is a gorgeous apple and the branches are obviously solid and sturdy. Nice tree

House temperature is down a full degree this morning and I think It will be at 19 inside by friday when my heating might start. I have acclimatised quite well. I need to think about clothing changeover, tomorrow when I have a full free day. This time I will concentrate on what I can easily layer as well as full-on winter clothes

Yes been turning it on since Sunday. Not for long though!

M0nica Tue 27-Sept-22 09:14:12

The weather changed yesterday, suddenly there was a bitterly cold wind, the heating came on and stayed on for a while, and I didn't open the french window doors. I had had them open all day on Saturday and Sunday.

I was wearing a pretty summer dress and light sweater yesterday and felt really cold, so dress wise, today is the start of winter, and over the next few weeks, every time I get a another winter outfit out of the storage wardrobe, I will launder and put each summer outfit in the storage wardrobe.

Mine kicked-in this morning for the first time in months - the thermostat is set at 21C. It's 10C outside.

I'll check tonight on my Nest thingy how long the boiler is actually in action.

I am on throes of the necessary summer to winter clothing turnaround, just having a break. I am trying to sort a few layering sets too, just in case the temperature does an indian summer

Bedroom temperature is falling during the day too, at this rate, heating will come on tomorrow via thermostat

Margiknot Wed 28-Sept-22 22:19:51

Ours came on this morning- for the first time this autumn - the thermostat set to 17.

Put the heating on last night. I was very cold although my oh was fine. I was wearing three layers including two jumpers and thick socks and still couldn't get warm. The electric throw was fine but as soon as I went to the kitchen I was cold so on went the heating for a short while. It took the chill off the kitchen and the bedroom which are north facing. It will be going on again tonight not prepared to sit in the house and shiver. It's oil fired heating.

I’ve put mine on this morning just for two hours to warm the place up.

I was at the temperature that I don`t want to go below when I came downstairs. These modern digital thermostats are not 100 accurate, don`t expect them to be. Thermostat was on 19 and I have raised all of them to 19.5, knowing full well that the temperature differential before kicking in is 1 degree. I expect that to be reached by tomorrow morning and thereafter it will constantly maintain that 19.5 via the underfloor heating

Depends on the sun today. Bear in mind that thermostats may not accurately record the actual room temperature. I have an adjustment in mine, in advanced settings and can go up or down to the proper temperature in the room, which I did some days ago. I have a weather station which is very accurate on indoor temperature measurement and can compare

From now on any adjustment will be on how I feel rather than a number. Mine is on timed automatic now but there is a button I can press with a manual overide and there is also the off button

My central heating has still not kicked in, it is set at 15°. I have however had my gas fire on in my sitting room for 45 minutes this morning and it has really warmed me up…?.. I am in a mid terraced house which was built in the 50s and it certainly does hold its heat..

karmalady Fri 30-Sept-22 07:51:01

The potential sabotage of the norway gas pipeline to uk is concerning. I have just bought myself a small ecofan for my stove and will use that to distribute warm air into the hall and from there it will rise upstairs

I think my heating kicked in for a a short while last night, it was comfy in my lounge at 20 when I got up and two pipes in my hall cupboard were still warm

I have turned off all the radiators I think we can do without, but am lighting a fire every night, that’s not actually a cheap alternative as the last load of logs I had last weekend, was £400 quite a rise on last year.

SachaMac Fri 30-Sept-22 09:02:45

I haven’t had the central heating on yet. It did drop very chilly last night so I put my gas fire on low for an hour & lit some candles to make it feel warm & cosy. I’m sitting with a lovely thick soft fleece over me in an evening & I’m putting a hot water bottle in my bed.

The heating will have to go on at some point though, I can’t stand to feel cold. I will set it at a lower temp than usual & switch off some radiators to try & save a bit of money.

M0nica Fri 30-Sept-22 13:03:03

Shinamae Your gas fire probably consumed more gas than your central heating would have had it come on.

MawtheMerrier Fri 30-Sept-22 13:26:17

I don’t know what figures you can base that on, M0nica
I have just had mine (2 years old) serviced and the engineer commented on how effective they are.

karmalady Fri 30-Sept-22 13:49:29

I have, at last, settled on my what is my living room comfy temperature, nice all day and it is 21 so no more tweaking of the thermostat. Thermostat is 20.5 but same as all thermostats, there is a certain % accuracy.

Is a gas fire given an efficiency rating? A boiler is given one on servicing. I know that my 3 year old ariston is 99.9% efficient. Overall efficiency does depend on house insulation. Could well be cheaper to heat one room via a gas fire than a whole house via ch

How much is that for? That seems very expensive. We've got around five years' supply of logs in our garden at the moment, all of which were free, but my daughter's just had logs delivered and I'm sure they were nowhere near as expensive as that.

Blossoming Fri 30-Sept-22 15:53:59

Mr. B finally succumbed and put the heating on for an hour early morning, so I got up to a nice warm house.

That’s the trouble with logs, you don’t really know what you’re getting, he called it a full load, but that could mean anything, I’ll be shopping around for the next lot.

Madgran77 Fri 30-Sept-22 17:44:55

Haven't switched it on yet. I have invested in thermal leggings and long-sleeved tops - to go under winter wear. Planning to layer up a lot as well!

Makes me laugh when I think about my arguments with my mum about her "sacrilegious" suggestion (to a 14-year-old) that if I was cold, I might wear a vest!!! grin

Round here, you can get various sizes of log deliveries - from small bags to those big bags builders get sand etc delivered in and then right up to a van or lorry load. I just wondered what kind of quantity you got for £400.

We visited an elderly relative today. He is 91 and his heating is set to 21C. It was lovely.

I’ve told O.H. that if he doesn’t put the heating on I’m moving in with his uncle.
