Has anyone dared to turn their heating on yet?

It's feeling a lot chillier tonight and the temperature is reading 17.5C in the flat and 16C in the annexe. Normally I would have put my heating on but I'm holding out! I might succumb at 17C and set the heating for 18C. I'm trying to be brave.

Have you switched your heating on yet? Are you holding out a bit longer? What will you set the thermostat for this year?

Our two spare bedrooms have the radiators off, the rooms are West facing, so get any sun all afternoon, I’ve been doing this for the last four years, no damp. If people, including grandchildren are staying and it’s very cold, rads are back on.

We did yesterday morning, arriving home after a night flight - the house did feel a bit chilly. It’s been off since about 9 last night though. Seems to be warmer today, thermometer outside the kitchen window reads 17.9 ATM, and that’s with no sun on it.

Anyone ordered a Damart catalogue?

I used to think the vests were just for old ladies

Anyone ordered a Damart catalogue?

I have some lovely M&S thermal tops that just look like long sleeve T shirts but are very warm. I bought them in different colours over the year and will start wearing those once the days get a bit cooler. I love them because I can just wear them on their own (with my jeans grin) if it's not too cold and just add layers as necessary.

Brownowl564 Mon 19-Sept-22 17:32:34

Good grief , not until it goes below 15 and then it has to be for a few days as we turn the heating off once it gets to 15, probably end October, as we are in North East Scotland, warm the person not the house, so lots of layers

I might put the summer duvet on, had to have a blanket over the sheet last night and only had the window open a little. Didn't get round to the winter duvet for the last couple of years, so let's hope it's another mild winter in N Wales. Jumper and winter slippers on today.

Second night with the wood burner. No CH til October at the earliest.

I had the chimney cleaned last weekend and I’ve just layed the wood burner ready to light, possibly tonight. Why be cold when I have a stash of wood (well seasoned).

Go to bed early now … my husband has now been transferred to a care home as I can’t look after him with altzheimers anymore…..I’ve done it for 26 years! So I just wrap up warmer, and when I get too cold ….go to bed! His care bill is £1000 a month so can’t afford heating anymore!

leeds22 Mon 19-Sept-22 17:41:52

We’ve been putting it on for an hour morning and evening for the last few days. Oil CH here, our last bill for 1000 litres was grim but we can’t stand being cold. Keeping well wrapped up and the winter duvet is going on tomorrow.

Stella14 Mon 19-Sept-22 17:42:16

No, I have a heated throw which is over me when I’m sitting down.

womblekelly Mon 19-Sept-22 17:43:29

Woodburner lit here in Yorkshire...

Cambia Mon 19-Sept-22 17:44:51

Electric blanket on to ease my aching hip….my excuse! No fire, log burner or heating yet. Little electric fire on in the evening for half an hour to take the chill off, otherwise try to sit in the conservatory, ten degrees warmer than the rest of the house!
Lots of throws in the evening.

I’m so sorry. That is tough for you on so many levels ?

I’m still on a fixed rate with BG until November next year but am getting into practice for when it finishes. Hot water has been turned down to eco settings and I’ve turned the heating down to 18c. It’s been on twice since April - yesterday for two hours and the same today. Felt anxious putting it on, but my elderly mum lives with us so not much choice as I can’t have her cold.

grannybuy Mon 19-Sept-22 17:48:32

Yes. Thermostat set at 22 in the living areas, and 18 in bedrooms. It ( underfloor ) has been on by the time I got up the last two mornings. ( Scotland )

BlueSapphire Mon 19-Sept-22 17:51:55

Have started to put mine on first thing in the morning for a couple of hours as it is feeling distinctly chilly.
Not bothering in the evening yet, just putting on a fleece or furry dressing gown.
And still have a 1 tog duvet on the bed, but will change that tomorrow for my winter 7.5.

jocork Mon 19-Sept-22 17:53:20

I used to leave heating on all year round with the thermostat controlling whether it came on or not, then the thermostat disconnected itself from the boiler so if the heating is on it just gets hotter and hotter so I have to put it on manually for an hour or two at a time. I should get it fixed but this way we use it less as we only put it on when extra layers are not sufficient. I haven't needed it yet and haven't got yhr really warm jumpers out yet.

suelld Mon 19-Sept-22 17:57:17

Yes sure we survived in the unheated homes, but we were children/young adults who moved around a lot more - at my age now (76) I get cold very easily and live in S W Wales in a house that is chilly inside even in the summer - the sun only gets into the ‘living/work’ room for an hour in the early evening - IF there is any sun at all - I’m trying to hold out as my next monthly heating bill was quoted for November as being at £469 a month - this was prior to Liz Truss’s announcement so I’m waiting with bated breath to see what is going to be in actuality!!! I can’t afford anything like that - that was a hike of over 300% a month on my current bills which are bad enough!
Beginning to freeze here slowly ….

Gwenisgreat1 Mon 19-Sept-22 18:19:03

Not got heating on yet (North Yorkshire) got my electric blanket on and extra thermals. OK so far!
