Do you make your bed as soon as you get up?

Question of the week grin

Sometimes I just leave it ( although I really dislike getting into an unmade bed )

I love a beautiful made bed but it does take time.
excuses excuses.

Thé cat obligingly follows the morning rule of, when I get up she moves to the foot of the bed which allows me to fold back the duvet for airing, windows opened before making the bed up later.
On sunny dry days I occasionally hang the duvet outside on the washing line.

I fold the covers back to air the bed, especially if the dog has snuck on or under them and often vacuum the sheet. Amazing how much dust there would be for bugs 😱

No, I fold the duvet back and smooth the bottom sheet, open the windows and let it air. It stays like that until I go to bed.

It is not advised to make a bed immediately, you will be trapping sweat and heat, a great environment for bedbugs.

Exactly. This is whatI do.

Absolutely definitely.... its made, straightened, cushions added, i certainly dont rise in a morning with the 'lark', but despite the lack of energy, I can't vacate the bedroom without the bed resembling a showroom display...... hahaha true.

Another window open, air, make later.

I turn the duvet back to air the bed. It will (usually) be made at some point later, and if not, it looks quite tidy anyway.

Seems most of us here do make our beds in the same way then.
Plump the pillows, turn back the duvet, smooth out the bottom (fitted) sheet if necessary. Then that’s it Bobs your uncle.

There are all sorts of duvet! I personally can't bear it when staying in a hotel and there's a sheet as well as a duvet. It gets all tangled up and defeats the purpose of a duvet at all. Might as well have blankets.

I'm another one who sits the bed on rising and makes it later. I also always iron all the bedding after laundering at 60 degrees.

Just roll the top down, smooth the bottom sheet, open the window and plump the pillows. It's neat and quick.....and it looks good, it smells fresher for being aired. I always think of it as a treat to myself because on the odd occasion when I have left it, it doesn't air, I get into a crumpled bed that night, maybe with bits, the pillows aren't right - and then I don't get a good night's sleep. The knock on effect of not making the bed is just not worth it.

When I lived in Switzerland - many decades ago when duvets were unusual in GB, feather duvets seemed to aired out the windows or on the balcony in every bedroom window every morning - protected by the overhanging eaves of the house, come rain or shine.
So I still pull the duvet back each morning and let it air- although not out of the window!

Yes that happened in Germany when I was a child, but when I’ve been back since the custom seems to have stopped?

Farzanah Fri 17-Feb-23 18:49:29

Don’t worry TerriBull. I thought that’s what was meant.😀.
Just wanted to make the distinctinction.

lemsip Fri 17-Feb-23 18:32:27

yes , I throw back the duvet right off the bed and remake bed mid morning..

the person who said 20 minutes, It has hardly cooled off in 20 mins.

When bed bugs were mentioned earlier in thread I presume dust mites were meant?

You couldn’t live with bed bugs because they bite and need pest control to sort out.

Dust mites live in their thousands in bedding and mattresses and feed on flakes of skin and moisture. My OH has asthma so I’m really fussy about airing the bed and opening windows, to try and cut down on them. Impossible to eradicate but can try and keep under control. I would never dream of making the bed after getting up. It’s only a matter of shaking the duvet and pillows and straightening the sheet before you go to bed anyway.

Yes that was me and I did mean dust mites, I hate to think of the impression I created, a bed crawling with bed bugs. I stand corrected Farzanah.

Well I don’t. I’m first for the shower so DH makes it. Very well too I might add.

M0nica Fri 17-Feb-23 17:16:43

I am another who pulls the bedclothes back it air until it is cool before remaking it.

Kim19 Fri 17-Feb-23 17:10:01

Same as majority here. I roll back the duvet, tidy up the undersheet, open the windows and leave the rooms to freshen until about an hour before I return to bed.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 17-Feb-23 17:07:39

That’s made me feel better TerriBull 🤣👍

TerriBull Fri 17-Feb-23 16:50:21

I also like my spare beds made up with cushions and throws, shocking I know, as if in my mind's eye we are running a boutique hotel. 'cept my guests don't pay anything! My granddaughter has now moved in spare slippers as well as a lot of other odds and sods, how can I explain to her, overly, garish, furry slippers are ruining my aesthetic grin I'm not quite as bad as one woman I read about in a colour supplement who liked her bedrooms so immaculate she didn't even want her grown up children coming to stay, because they mucked them up........and we sometimes have a dog in them as well with our grown up children, who has absolutely no respect for tastefully arranged cushions at all shock

I throw my duvet over the windowsill as often as I can - both sunlight and cold get rid of germs I think. No overhanging eaves here sadly, so not possible on rainy days, but bed is always well aired. I make it mid-morning usually.

I also throw back the duvet to air the bed, straighten the bottom sheet and leave it most days until I go to bed with my hot water bottle.

Perfect

karmalady Fri 17-Feb-23 16:37:03

Beds need airing, humans sweat about 25ml per hour of sleep. I throw the covers back and re-make in about 2 hours. I too like a calm neat bedroom at bedtime

GrannyGravy13 Fri 17-Feb-23 16:35:31

Throwback duvet whilst showering and then make it once dressed, always have a bedroom window open.

I am slightly OCD about all of the bedrooms and the beds have to be made complete with throws and cushions including the twin beds in the GC’s room.

I wouldn’t be able to settle knowing there was an unmade bed upstairs.
