New Mattress

My current mattress is now several years old, full of springs and really quite heavy even to lift when tucking sheets underneath. I am now of the opinion that a new mattress might help with my sciatica and other joint problems. Hybrid mattresses seem to be quite popular and something I think I might consider. Has anyone bought this type and if so how have you found them ? (with or without joint/arthritic pains). Any feed back would be welcome thank you.

John Lewis bedding departments are wonderful. Their staff are always very knowledgeable and fully trained to help you make the best choice your budget allows. Remember we spend a third of our lives in bed, so it’s worth investing as much as you can possibly afford. We spent just about half a day in John Lewis testing their various mattresses and are very pleased with the one we chose. It was to replace a ViSpring (?), which was just too expensive now we’re both pensioners. The JL own brand, all natural, no turn is just as comfortable and the help & advice we were given was amazing.

Emma no quibble guarantee is 200 nights, so almost 7 months.

I bought mine through Ideal World for about 2/3 it's normal price.
I did find it a bit soft on the one edge after about 6 months, so I contacted Emma and they sent me a new one and took the other one away.
I've now had the replacement for over a year.
I have MS, my mobility is terrible, I'm great intolerant, and I've struggled with insomnia for 3 decades. I still struggle to sleep at night but I've found I'm cooler and do get better sleep with this mattress than I've had in years.

There is a programme on bbc sounds discussing mattress, it’s called “sliced bread “ this programme looks at all the mattresses on sale, the hype etc, which are worth the money and those that are just BS
Just go onto the bbc sounds app and search for it

We have a ghost mattress which is lovely. I would thoroughly recommend it. Not too ‘wallowy’ like some memory foam mattresses I have slept on. Mattress doesn’t need turning, just rotating.

How did you choose it Bijou?
And what would you recommend someone looked for?
I was about to suggest this type of bed to my mother-in-law who really needs to elevate her feet overnight.

Because I now have to sleep with my legs raised I have an adjustable bed and it has a foam mattress. I am now getting used to it.

We bought a mattress some years ago which is filled with wool, cotton, cashmere and silk. It is so comfortable; we were delighted with it, and since adding a 'Devon Duvet' mattress topper, it is very hard indeed to get up in the mornings. The wool topper is keeping us cool in this hot weather. The only downside is that the mattress is heavy to turn over, but it provides a good workout.

That sounds like our Harrison Spinks mattress.

I highly recommend the Relaxsan Waterlattex Vision Deluxe mattress - I have been buying for over 20 years, bought them for all my children when they were young/teenagers and I have them on the spare beds too. They have no springs and are medium firmness to lie on, you don't sink into them like memory foam and they don't get hot.

This is their bio they have been selling them for 50 years

You can search for a stockist near you to try it out
Double is around 400 and Kingsize around 500

Pity you weren’t watching qvc yesterday they had one as a Tsv Emma you could have tried it and if not for you returned it. I’ve also got arthritis and I’ve a dream bed I went to the show room and the sales guy helped me get the right one. But I’d already tried one before because my oldest had got them for his house and I’d slept on his like a baby lol I’d had memory foam before that and I could get comfortable on it with my arthritis no problem

Another vote for Emma here - it is certainly no hotter than my old sprung mattress, and no need to turn it over, just rotate occasionally. They aren't exactly "cheap" - normal price is around £600 for a double, however I got mine for around £440 when they had a sale on.

The Hypnos bed bought through the Premier Inn link is not actually the bed you sleep on in the hotel.
It is a domestic version of it.
There are Ts and Cs which explain it when you go through to purchase. It is also a shorter warranty period.

This is the link to the main Hypnos website:
www.hypnosbeds.com/uk

They have a showroom in Castle Donnington with very knowledgeable staff (at least the 3 times I've been).
The offers in the showroom are easily matched elsewhere but it's nice to lie on them and decide what suits - you really notice the differences between models.

I found the Emma a dead weight when trying to rotate. Moved it to a spare room and nought a Silennight sprung mattress. Lovely and deep so easy for getting out of bed and comfy. Much easier to rotate.

I bought a king size Emma mattress after sleeping on a similar type when away. I loved it but husband hated it and complained continuously. I was keen to return it within the agreed time but he decided we should keep it.
Complaints went on…
We bought a Hypnos bed, through Premier Inn offer. He had slept on many of these and was keen to get one. I just wanted peace and quiet. I find it OK, he is a happy man once more…

I had Tempur mattresses for years and found them wonderful, but since I hit the menopause I've been a very hot sleeper and find foam far too hot. Also as my hips and joints become more elderly I think I need different support.
We're off to John Lewis soon to try some mattresses as they offer a 60 night mattress trial.

Pepine Tue 20-Jun-23 15:13:01

We’ve bought Emma mattresses for the beds in our holiday let - numerous reviews have commented positively on how comfortable the beds are which I count as praise indeed! In answer to an earlier query, the reconditioned ones are mattresses which have been returned under guarantee. All out side covering and internal topper is removed and replaced with new so to all intents and purposes you get a new mattress. Handy if budget is constrained.

I have Emma too. Its fairly light but I find it a bit soft though better for my hips. They have a long guarantee period where you can send it back for no reason. You can get reconditioned (?) ones which ate considerably cheaper.

I think that they are re-selling thge returned ones!

DutchDoll Tue 20-Jun-23 13:57:37

I've had a Tempur adjustable bed since 2012 and it's really fantastic. Very supportive and I have my legs/feet raised about 6" and the head end is raised about 4".
I have chronic pain and arthritis in both knees and both shoulders. My mobility is poor.
Without this bed my life is considerably more difficult. I feel the difference if I visit our son/daughter in law or when I visit my 97 year old Mum who says that she never has any pain!
Constant pain is very debilitating, making you really tired all the time, probably partly due to my various pain medications (Pregabalin, Co Proxamol and OraMorph).
A good bed is worth it's weight in gold!
I've even bought a single sized Tempur Adjustable Bed to make a ground floor bedroom for when I am unable to manage the stairs.
I hope that you find an appropriate bed for you!

Brigidsdaughter Tue 20-Jun-23 13:35:22

I bought an Emma Original based on Which too, overlooking the hybrid element. I tend to feel too warm and am planning on replacing it for that reason. Not s good but for me. Cinfortwise its ok

FionaG Tue 20-Jun-23 13:17:50

We bought a once in a lifetime amazing mattress from Naturalmat (Devon based, all natural, v eco) with a topper. Very pricey but my life up to then had consisted of cheap, uncomfy, sometimes secondhand mattresses and my sciatica was really bad.
Sadly it has ruined every away stay for us as it really is the best!

Humbley Tue 20-Jun-23 13:12:31

I boughta tempur mattress it came with a month exchange with dreams perfect in the shop but after it arrived I found it really heavy to rotate it or to lift to put fitted sheet. I got ill after so was in bed a lot went past the month couldn't change it and it wasn't cheap I slid off the side when sitting to dry my hair. My hips hurt more than ever hard to turn over at night and ridiculously hard to get out of bed in a hurry if your going to be sick or if door bell goes. Wish I could change it but can't afford to I feel like im stuck with it forever

ClaraB Tue 20-Jun-23 13:00:49

We bought an Emma mattress and couldn’t get over the smell of the chemicals that came off it, apparently this is meant to wear off but it didn’t. It was returned within the time limit. We then had a lockdown purchase of an IKEA mattress which was recommended by a friend, we tolerated it for 18 months and then bought a zip and link Harrison Spinks super king from John Lewis, it’s so comfortable and made of natural fibres.

Candelle Tue 20-Jun-23 12:22:29

Interesting thread for me as I am thinking of changing our bed.

We currently have one which although sprung is made of all natural materials and is a 'no turn' which is why we bought it. It was dreadfully dear and I though it would see us out but I now have various problems and am thinking of changing it.

Did you all change the divan base at the same time as ordering a new mattress? Or, did you keep the old base?

I have made a dip in my mattress where I sit on the sit of the bed (quite a few bouts of illness have necessitated this) and I wonder if I would murder an 'Emma' should I do the same, which I probably would!

How would an 'Emma' hold up to sitting on the side? Does anyone also do the same and if so, how has the mattress held up?
