New Mattress

My current mattress is now several years old, full of springs and really quite heavy even to lift when tucking sheets underneath. I am now of the opinion that a new mattress might help with my sciatica and other joint problems. Hybrid mattresses seem to be quite popular and something I think I might consider. Has anyone bought this type and if so how have you found them ? (with or without joint/arthritic pains). Any feed back would be welcome thank you.

I've had my mattress a couple of years now. It's a full foam emma mattress. I love it. My hip hasn't ached since I started sleeping on it. It is quite heavy, but you don't have to turn it, just rotate it which I can manage on my own. I would never go back to sleeping on a sprung mattress.

I have Emma too. Its fairly light but I find it a bit soft though better for my hips. They have a long guarantee period where you can send it back for no reason. You can get reconditioned (?) ones which ate considerably cheaper.

We have bought 2 emma mattresses in the last year. One double and one kingsize. I have sciatica and also arthritis. Pleased so far.

Nearly a month ago we bought a new double mattress. It is a Harrison Spinks eco pillow top mattress. It felt wonderful in the showroom and we liked the fact it is all natural materials like wool, hemp etc. and all fully recyclable. We have a single HS bed in a spare room and every one who has slept in it loves it.

We had it from Dreams who give you 30-100 days to try it and will exchange it if you are not totally happy.

My husband loves it but he could sleep on a bed of nails! I find it so soft that if you sit on the side you could easily slip off. If I try to turn over there is no support and I feel like I am falling out of bed.

It cost £1500 so will sadly be exchanged next month.

I bought DD2 an Emma mattress a few years ago - she has spinal problems and found it fine. However her DH wanted a bigger bed so they now have a Tempur, which isn’t as ‘hot’ as she thought it would be. Again, she finds it ok.
I’ve a Dormeo, bought through a TV ad, only because of a very long guarantee and that it doesn’t need turning. I ordered the medium to firm and really wish I’d opted for the medium to soft. My hip has started to ache, but I think that may be the poor driving position in my new car.

Thank you for all your replies. Interesting to find that several of you have bought an Emma mattress as I had put the Emma on my list together with some others. I have been reading reviews this evening and the Simba Hybrid also seems to come out quite well with the Emma being considered a little softer and the Simba firmer but are both very similar.

We looked at Emma mattress reviews and spoke to a couple of friends who bought them but returned them. They certainly are cheap but since they are foam they are very hot and sweaty. Does all that sweat soak into the mattress?

Oldbat1 Tue 20-Jun-23 10:37:04

I have found the Emma mattress not hot or sweaty unlike the previous mattresses. I must admit that was what concerned me.

We bought an Emma Original mattress as it was a recommended Which? best buy. I cannot fault it. We have since bought two more Emma mattresses for other beds needing replacement mattresses, and visitors have commented on how comfortable they are. Emma often have them discounted.

Like a lot of people we have Emma as well.very comfy.

My vote goes to SIMBA. Had been looking to replace ours for some time. Slept on one in an AirBNB and bought one on our return. Never regretted it.

Interesting thread for me as I am thinking of changing our bed.

We currently have one which although sprung is made of all natural materials and is a 'no turn' which is why we bought it. It was dreadfully dear and I though it would see us out but I now have various problems and am thinking of changing it.

Did you all change the divan base at the same time as ordering a new mattress? Or, did you keep the old base?

I have made a dip in my mattress where I sit on the sit of the bed (quite a few bouts of illness have necessitated this) and I wonder if I would murder an 'Emma' should I do the same, which I probably would!

How would an 'Emma' hold up to sitting on the side? Does anyone also do the same and if so, how has the mattress held up?

We bought an Emma mattress and couldn’t get over the smell of the chemicals that came off it, apparently this is meant to wear off but it didn’t. It was returned within the time limit. We then had a lockdown purchase of an IKEA mattress which was recommended by a friend, we tolerated it for 18 months and then bought a zip and link Harrison Spinks super king from John Lewis, it’s so comfortable and made of natural fibres.

I boughta tempur mattress it came with a month exchange with dreams perfect in the shop but after it arrived I found it really heavy to rotate it or to lift to put fitted sheet. I got ill after so was in bed a lot went past the month couldn't change it and it wasn't cheap I slid off the side when sitting to dry my hair. My hips hurt more than ever hard to turn over at night and ridiculously hard to get out of bed in a hurry if your going to be sick or if door bell goes. Wish I could change it but can't afford to I feel like im stuck with it forever

We bought a once in a lifetime amazing mattress from Naturalmat (Devon based, all natural, v eco) with a topper. Very pricey but my life up to then had consisted of cheap, uncomfy, sometimes secondhand mattresses and my sciatica was really bad.
Sadly it has ruined every away stay for us as it really is the best!

Brigidsdaughter Tue 20-Jun-23 13:35:22

I bought an Emma Original based on Which too, overlooking the hybrid element. I tend to feel too warm and am planning on replacing it for that reason. Not s good but for me. Cinfortwise its ok

DutchDoll Tue 20-Jun-23 13:57:37

I've had a Tempur adjustable bed since 2012 and it's really fantastic. Very supportive and I have my legs/feet raised about 6" and the head end is raised about 4".
I have chronic pain and arthritis in both knees and both shoulders. My mobility is poor.
Without this bed my life is considerably more difficult. I feel the difference if I visit our son/daughter in law or when I visit my 97 year old Mum who says that she never has any pain!
Constant pain is very debilitating, making you really tired all the time, probably partly due to my various pain medications (Pregabalin, Co Proxamol and OraMorph).
A good bed is worth it's weight in gold!
I've even bought a single sized Tempur Adjustable Bed to make a ground floor bedroom for when I am unable to manage the stairs.
I hope that you find an appropriate bed for you!

I think that they are re-selling thge returned ones!

Pepine Tue 20-Jun-23 15:13:01

We’ve bought Emma mattresses for the beds in our holiday let - numerous reviews have commented positively on how comfortable the beds are which I count as praise indeed! In answer to an earlier query, the reconditioned ones are mattresses which have been returned under guarantee. All out side covering and internal topper is removed and replaced with new so to all intents and purposes you get a new mattress. Handy if budget is constrained.

I had Tempur mattresses for years and found them wonderful, but since I hit the menopause I've been a very hot sleeper and find foam far too hot. Also as my hips and joints become more elderly I think I need different support.
We're off to John Lewis soon to try some mattresses as they offer a 60 night mattress trial.

I bought a king size Emma mattress after sleeping on a similar type when away. I loved it but husband hated it and complained continuously. I was keen to return it within the agreed time but he decided we should keep it.
Complaints went on…
We bought a Hypnos bed, through Premier Inn offer. He had slept on many of these and was keen to get one. I just wanted peace and quiet. I find it OK, he is a happy man once more…

4allweknow Tue 20-Jun-23 16:09:53

I found the Emma a dead weight when trying to rotate. Moved it to a spare room and nought a Silennight sprung mattress. Lovely and deep so easy for getting out of bed and comfy. Much easier to rotate.

NotSpaghetti Tue 20-Jun-23 16:35:11

The Hypnos bed bought through the Premier Inn link is not actually the bed you sleep on in the hotel.
It is a domestic version of it.
There are Ts and Cs which explain it when you go through to purchase. It is also a shorter warranty period.

This is the link to the main Hypnos website:
www.hypnosbeds.com/uk

They have a showroom in Castle Donnington with very knowledgeable staff (at least the 3 times I've been).
The offers in the showroom are easily matched elsewhere but it's nice to lie on them and decide what suits - you really notice the differences between models.
