Beach huts. Do you have one?

I’ve always had a yearning to own a beach hut.
A pristine row of huts is such an iconic picture of the seaside.
There is a hut advertised on Rightmove on a lovely stretch of coastline 40 miles from where I live. It’s priced at ‘offers over £48,000’ . No plumbing.
What would I do with it? Is it just a pretty shed? What do you do with yours?

You can get a whole centrally heated caravan for that price.

Should have added there’s both loos and hot showers and ice cream /drink /snack shop 100 yards away

I live on S Coast. I walk the beach often, and totally understand the lure of a beach hut. A friend has one, she loves it. Sitting inside or out, with a book/music, being able to hear the sea, tea from your camping has stove, walking on the beach, chatting to dog walkers and passers-by
My nearest beach huts cost about £36k (twice what they were in mid 2000s?). Two miles down the road a little cheaper £33k. Ten miles in the other direction under £20k. All have an unobstructed view of the sea (Some places have them in a couple of parallel lines)
Personally I think at 40 miles away, you wouldn't get the most out of a buy. Petrol is getting more expensive again, and a round trip of 80 miles might not sound too inviting in a few years time.
If you can rent one for a year, that might help you decide - winter beach walks (rain and all) are the best.

Susieq62 those beach huts in Amble are in such a lovely position! Fab little town.

I was always jealous of a school friend whose parents rented one for the summer, that is until I was invited to join them and discovered, no loo, no water and no electricity! I couldn't see the point in it!

I wanted to buy one in Shaldon years ago but we needed the money for something else.

They were quite reasonable at the time but not any more!

We bought one in Westward Ho! as we didn't have a garden and it was lovely to just walk there (10 mins) and look out at the sea. Lots of people would walk by and chat and say they wish they had one! We had electricity and access to a water tap, public toilets just up the road. Family and friends would come and we had bbq's and picnics. Even in wet weather it was nice and cosy inside. We sold it when we moved and had a nice garden to sit in and none of the family wanted to bother cutting the grass or do the maintenance. We sold it for £12,000, which was what we bought it for 10 years earlier but recently it was up for sale for £30,000!

I wish too, tanith!

I compromise with place mats, mugs and a picture of beach huts!

Just a shed with a sea view
Yes, that's it! Lovely 😁

One with electricity and a loo would be perfect.

Wow, that’s a lot of money for a “Hut”, with NO plumbing? Maybe I don’t know what those huts are all about. Can you stay over night in one? If so, I might take another look - as long as the public (yuck!) restrooms are not too far away.
It’s a toss up… 🤷🏼‍♀️

Taht's lovely snowbell smile

I was going to suggest hiring one as MerylStreep has said. It is much cheaper unless you will spend every day in your beach hut

Snowbell Sun 27-Aug-23 14:10:58

Shill29 that's exactly what I've done!

I remember visiting a friend and her family who were on holiday and had (or had the use of) a beach hut.

I felt it was really for "grown ups" as everything interesting was outside.
Also, there were other people to consider so if you were playing you were sent away anyway!

There were only a few of them but they seemed quite close together to me as a child.

Can't remember where they were. I want to say South West somewhere... is that likely?

Zuzu Sun 27-Aug-23 14:01:58

I'm in the US and haven't really seen these here. Do you sleep overnight in these? Or is it like a daytime cabana type of thing? There's camping some do that's "off-the-grid" and many use a composting toilet. I'd personally want a toilet nearby if overnight. It sounds lovely.

Shill29 Sun 27-Aug-23 13:52:43

Love them! Could always convert the garden shed, sit in a deckchair, close one’s eyes and use one’s imagination🤣

LadyGaGa Sun 27-Aug-23 13:29:47

We always used to rent one in Mablethorpe when my kids were little. Lovely memories of my late ex MIL constantly providing sandwiches and snacks for all the kids. It had a gas ring and water and her mum used to snooze on a deckchair and watch us all having fun. It was near a boat lake and paddling pool. Happy days. I would love one.

Dcba Sun 27-Aug-23 13:25:55

My mum and dad had one in West Mersea for many years….they bought it just before I got married…..and they had some wonderful times there as did we when our children came along. Lots of cups of tea, trips to the nearby loo and watching the kids build sandcastles and paddle! Just a couple of years ago. I took a ‘down memory lane’ trip to that area again and actually found our much loved beach hut ….looking pretty spiffy!

We rented one in St Anne's a few years ago...just for the day...took four of our grandchildren and had a lovely day...tea,coffee, milk all supplied....would definitely do it again

Pippa22 Sun 27-Aug-23 12:52:36

I cannot understand the appeal of a beach hut. Just a shed with a sea view.
There is a lot of maintenance required for some as there is exposure to sea air and high winds.
There are many people who don’t agree with me and there is huge demand hence the high price.

Susieq62 Sun 27-Aug-23 12:38:12

For my 70th my daughter rented a beach hut for the day in Amble and it was a dream come true ! It was during CoVID so we were very lucky to enjoy it! Could never afford one plus I live in the middle of the country so buying one would be an expensive luxury !!

Went to property auction in 2006 there was a beach hut In catalogue either a guide price of £120000. At beginning of the auction it was announced the storm had demolished it Still went for over one hundred grand

Hello,

We’re in Margate, Kent.

Our Beach Hut is at West Bay, about 5 minutes from us.

Our hut is up from the 1st April to the end of September every year and we pay the local council £500 for the privilege.

We then have to pay £100 to take it down and store it.

Not a cheap hobby, but worth it.

Grantanow Sun 27-Aug-23 11:09:08

My BIL has one on the south coast which he bought but he still has to pay ground rent to the Council. Expensive and no facilities. They look pretty but imho have low VFM.
