Autumn cleaning?

We all know about Spring cleaning, whether we do it or not, but what about Autumn cleaning?
We’ve had three months of the focus mostly being on the garden and outside in general, plus little energy to do much at all perhaps in the heat, and I feel inside has been neglected.
So my first job will be a thorough clean and reordering of the fridge - the freezer is a bit daunting, but maybe that too.
And I’m booking Ovenu to do my range cooker.
That should do for starters.
What would you tackle first?

My Danish grandmother's g eneration were brought up to house-clean thoroughly both in the spring and in the autumn, when you stopped needing heating on, and before you started.

That generation had two sets of curains - winter ones and summer ones, so part of the twice yearly cleaning consisted of taking down the curtains, washing them and putting them away, cleaning paintwork and window-panes then hanging up the correct curtains for the time of year.

Summer clothes were washed and put away in the autumn, winter ones in the spring.

I clean my kitchen cupboards in October, clean the rest of the house well before Christmas again before Easter and change summer and winter clothes around at the appropriate season.

All year round I clean rooms on a two week system, wash and iron clothes weekly and tidy up as we go along.

Paintwork and windows still go by the old spring and autumn routine.

Mostly fairly tidy here but I do love a day when OH is out, the sun is shining and I can clean right through the house.

I do a paint work clean Spring and Autumn with an extra wipe if either my Mum or a very particular friend is going to be visiting!

Oh yes, my mother did that too.

I never plan housework, just do the bare minimum when necessary. However, I did shampoo the living room carpet yesterday, but only because the cats keep eating grass and sicking it up when I am not watching.
This is my motto:

I do make plans to clean but get put off.
Spiders! Every year at this time, there seem to be cobwebs everywhere, every day. There are two big spiders in the bath as I write.
Ladybirds! I haven't made out where they come from, but they appear in all different combinations of red, white and black in the upstairs bathroom.
I don't like hurting any of them and tip them outside. I expect the spiders eat the ladybirds. Oh well...

Cooker shelves today, using the saved up bits of bacofoil. It’s amazing!
Any more tips happily taken.

I have hurt my back and can’t do any housework - how long do you think I can stretch it out

karmalady Sun 17-Sept-23 17:46:29

nothing for me, I keep my house clean by doing a bit at a time, all year around. I do cupboards, drawers and wardrobes on an as needed basis and that heps with de-cluttering. Different situations for all of us

I loathe cleaning but do 45 mins to an hour each day, so I can keep on top of it, I try to make sure my house is never dusty or dirty.
I love Autumn and my candles change each season, and I love the cosy feeling it gives, especially when the house is clean.

I was proper poorly last September - is that stretch too far!!

I am having a clear out ready for the family coming at Christmas. Does that count?

I dislike cleaning but love a clean and tidy house! I just clean as and when things need doing. I don’t plan or make lists, just tackle the jobs as they come. I don’t understand why this should change according to the seasons. I take no interest in these chores and never think or speak about them. So boring.

A year is good going, even my laid back OH might be commenting on the dust bunnies

I wake up each morning full of good intentions.

As my mother used to say - the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
I will try harder.

Too close to home alas!

Funny, we were just having a chat about that at work. Housekeeping over the summer meant keeping to minimum standards! Now that more time is spent indoors, there are a few items around that need attention.

Baseboards and trim need a good wiping, as do the tops of the kitchen cupboards. These are on my list. I gave my kitchen floor a good scrub, not just a run-over with a mop, and I can see the difference. I'll pick a room every few days and give it a good going-over.

My problem is that i start with enthusiasm then find something much more interesting to do, so I have half a kitchen with pristine and tidy cupboards and half not. Likewise, bedrooms cupboards.

I do try to keep to a routine, otherwise stuff I hate doing would be forever put off.

Joseann Mon 18-Sept-23 07:28:02

I have to keep my house spotless every season because people always come and stay in it while I'm away, like now! 😂

Lexisgranny Mon 18-Sept-23 07:39:35

For some reason, and despite grandchildren all being passed school age, I have a true ‘back to school mentality’. The beginning of each school term sees me doing some extra cleaning, and de-cluttering. I confess to being a bit of a neat freak anyway, but I put that down to laziness, if I keep everywhere tidy there is less effort in the long run. luckily, DH is that way inclined as well and we both find this system very satisfying though I realise it doesn’t work for some.

Likewise!

I have sorted out stuff which needs to be passed on or thrown out and it is sitting in bedrooms while I dither (put my head in the sand).

Then go and do something more enjoyable, like using up my yarn stash, tidying the plants in the garden etc.

A coffee - good luck - or even treat yourself to professional cleaners and let them do it for you.

Rosiebee Mon 18-Sept-23 12:00:14

Had a clear out of fridge/freezer/ food cupboards before coming away on holiday. Also put most of summer clothes away. When we get back there will be several wash loads to sort out, then I'll be ready for Autumn. Will also need to change throws and cushions in conservatory and put away the sea sidey stuff. Cleaning just goes on as usual- when and where it needs it.

Reading your comments has inspired me to stop procrastinating and start with the kitchen cupboards, tackling loads of dust behind very heavy furniture next...seems a thankless task as have two border collies that moult and bring in mud and dirt every day 😄

leeds22 Mon 18-Sept-23 12:16:26

The Ovenu people have just left. Lovely shiny oven. That might be my autumn cleaning completed. I do like the sound of peppermint soap to keep the spiders away.
