Washer dryer? Thinking about 'investing' in one

Our DS and family are short of space but a tumble dryer would really help with the washing a young family creates.
The machines seem to have a high energy rating (E).
Any hints/tips/suggestions gratefully received ......

We replaced our old Zanussi W/D with a Samsung and it's fine. Not had a problem with the washing. I only use the dryer in the Winter for towels. Everything else comes out dry enough to hang over a dryer in the bathroom or a bedroom and it's dry the next day. Even sheets get hung over the top of the airer to dry in the Winter.

Thank you again for all your thoughts, much appreciated. I feel the general consensus is that the washer/dryers some of us had years ago were disappointing but it definitely sounds worth checking out the newer versions - a hopeful thought! DS and DIL are very budget conscious so I know they will use it economically. In the meantime its Granny & Gramps to the rescue!

I have had two- once a very long time ago when my kids were little and I had a very small kitchen. It was good as a fall back for emergencies and long spells of wet weather but as others have said, not good for large amounts of drying. I think that was a zanussi.
Then a while ago I had another (not sure of the make) but that was even worse and you could only dry very small amounts.
When I moved into my present home I chose not to bother as I was on my own and had a warm bathroom downstairs where I dry my clothes if I can't hang them out.
I wouldn't buy another now.

Weve had two. One when kids were young. Then we bought a washer dryer for dd about 5yrs ago. Neither have been much good and i wouldnt buy another. The washers were great not so the dryers.
