What do you keep out on your kitehen worktops?

I am soon going to have the kitchen diner repainted and am trying to find space to put things away but my kitchen is small. I am quite happy in normal times to have a number of items on my worktops. I don’t want to be climbing or bending to get things out to use, nor am I a minimalist. I offered various items to my daughter and granddaughter to make some space and they want me to put everything away permanently.
What do you happily leave out on your worktops?

Not many mentions of a radio- an essential for me.

I use an Alexa which is on a shelf - shall we do shelves next?

A stand mixer, a Cuisinart, some dish soap, some chopping boards, a coffee maker, my husband's blender, a toaster oven I only use for holiday meals, a water glass, and miscellaneous clutter of my husband's. Well, to be fair, part of it is my stuff, but if it's mine, it's not clutter, of course, it's wonderful bits of this that and the other which my husband stubbornly considers clutter.

Kettle
Toaster
Bowl of fruit
Knife block
Some rather nice wooden paddle boards stacked up against the wall
Egg holder
Plate warmer (hidden by side of fridge freezer)

I couldn't cope with getting the kettle out every time I wanted to use it.

Well if we're including the walls and window sills I also have a knife rack (on the wall), and two flowering plants (no idea what they are) on the window sill. Also on the window sill is a large Danish clear glass vase thing. I also forgot a stainless steel trivet next to the hob and a stone one with penguins on next to the Ninja.

Nor do I. It is mostly potato peelings, outer lettuce leaves, orange peel.

We very, very rarely waste food, compost bin is outside the back door

Cabbie21 Fri 05-Apr-24 19:49:02

Thanks for all the replies.
It stand to reason that those with longer worktops have more cupboard space below for storage, especially if you also have a utility room for white goods.
My kitchen cupboards/ worktops, including sink and hob, form three sides of a square.
My wall cupboards hold crockery, glassware, casserole dishes, and dry foods. My lower cupboards are bigger, containing pans and food ( tins and bottles) -and oddments. I think I could do a bit of swapping around to make better use of the lower big cupboards for my slow cooker, electric tin opener, food mixer, currently on the worktop, but I will ( after the decorator ) still leave out:
Fruit bowl
tray of drinks
bread board
radio
microwave
jugs of utensils
Knife block
tray of tea, coffee, biscuits
Mug tree
Kettle
air fryer
sink tidy
toaster
Notepad and pens.
Food waste bin
window sill has plants, tub for bottle tops (for Hospice)
Kitchen roll holder is on the wall

It’s my kitchen and I like it so I don’t care what anybody else thinks. I need these things around me and I can’t be faffed with getting things in and out of cupboards.

Sink end I have bread bin, knives in a block, teapot, massive fruit bowl with stack of papers behind, kettle and stoneware holder for eggs, kitchen roll holder. Other end I have large toaster, microwave, CD Player/radio, Alexa, pile of CDs, another pile of paperwork.

It’s your home leave what you want. I can’t see the point if in and out of cupboards to constantly used items. It’s a home after all.

That's how I feel.

Wow, fancythat, you have a 13ft long toaster? That must make a lot of toast all at once!!!

grin

Norah Fri 05-Apr-24 19:15:25

Salt and Pepper, jug of cooking utensils, fruit bowls.

Small space (2'x6') with cupboards on sides, above and below, coffee machine and coffee gadgets. Most useful items in our home.

Nothing on the islands.

Wow, it seems most have quite an array of items out!

I have 2 L-shaped counters across from one another. Coffee maker and knife block on one side, fruit bowl and box of tissues on the other. That's it.

kittylester Fri 05-Apr-24 18:38:07

Interesting to see other ways of doing things, though. I love it.

And a glass of chilled rose! Well it is Friday.

Siope Fri 05-Apr-24 18:20:12

If I could, I’d have empty worktops. As it is, I have the microwave, toaster and kettle on them, and the food waste caddy lives in a corner of the draining board, which I rarely use.

kittylester Fri 05-Apr-24 18:18:47

crazyH

kittylester - you probably have a large kitchen and lots of worktop-space !

I forgot a box of tissues and a lamp.

Our kitchen is not huge but we do have 2 longish runs of work top. I love my kitchen.

^Everything like fruit bowl, coffee pods pot, biscuit jar, butter dish etc. has to be hidden due to a certain four legged friend.^

Aka food waste bin 😁

Definitely. 30 raw eggs too!
