What do you keep out on your kitehen worktops?

I am soon going to have the kitchen diner repainted and am trying to find space to put things away but my kitchen is small. I am quite happy in normal times to have a number of items on my worktops. I don’t want to be climbing or bending to get things out to use, nor am I a minimalist. I offered various items to my daughter and granddaughter to make some space and they want me to put everything away permanently.
What do you happily leave out on your worktops?

Kettle, toaster, bread bin, microwave which I seldom use. Tea/coffee/ sugar canisters, utensil potx2 .

We have a stainless steel bread bin that sits on a shelf on our ever useful cellar head, with the latest loaf in, occasionally with a few hot cross buns or crumpets. And a rather attractive green enamel bin (possibly 1940s?) on the kitchen floor, which is currently full of a small selection of DH’s junk precious things. On raising the lid I can see a quantity of half empty packets of seeds, mostly well out of date, and an allotment calendar from 2021.

On the worktops we have
Microwave
Kitchen roll holder
Knife block
Radio
Toaster
Tea and coffee on a small tray
Teapot
Bread maker
Pen and paper for shopping lists
Our chopping boards are on top of the microwave as well as a plastic food container that we put bread etc into as no room for a bread bin
We have a small kitchen

Far too much as I haven't enough cupboard space! Although I do have wall cupboards with quite a bit more space available at the top, but I can't safely reach it!

MissAdventure Mon 08-Apr-24 17:20:43

Would some sort of woven one be better?
I'm never sure whether I'm supposed to ensure the bread is kept airtight, or with some sort of ventilation

I own a bread bin. It's white enamel. I use it in my pottery to keep sand in.
I have thought of making a pottery bread bin but fear it would attract mould too.

MissAdventure Mon 08-Apr-24 17:15:24

I eat so much I'm surprised it has time to go mouldy.

OldFrill Mon 08-Apr-24 17:12:28

We don't eat bread in the house.

MissAdventure Mon 08-Apr-24 16:57:21

Of course.
Always with photos. wink

Callistemon21 Mon 08-Apr-24 16:52:36

We can compare bread bins.
With photos 😁

Perhaps we need a bread bin thread. smile

They are bound to make someone want to scream!

Grammaretto

I'm fascinated by the mentions of bread bins by many of you.
I have consistently failed to keep bread, other than mouldy, in a bread bin.
I either eat it immediately, covering it in a paper bag to deter flies or freeze it sliced to toast later.
What is your secret? Do tell.

DH likes a whole small loaf sometimes, that doesn't mouldy
I like crumpets or Scotch pancakes I don't each much bread.

Bread bin

Callistemon21 Mon 08-Apr-24 16:43:09

I don't know why I've got a bread in, we tend to take as much as we need out of the freezer πŸ˜ƒ
But I'd miss it if it wasn't there.

MissAdventure Mon 08-Apr-24 16:40:55

I wondered if terracotta might be a good material for a bread bin.

Franbern Mon 08-Apr-24 16:31:38

|My bread bin, is just a small black box the size of a loaf. I keep bread in the fridge, but this is useful for things like packet of siz ot cross buns or crjmpets, etc.

MissAdventure Mon 08-Apr-24 12:14:47

I have a big white plastic box thing that I use for bread, but I don't really like it.
I tend to leave bread in its wrapper, on top of it. hmm

My husband has an aversion to bread bins. I don't understand why, but he really dislikes them, so we have a thick wooden block (a butcher's block, I suppose, except it's never been used for meat) on which we put bread products. It sits next to the knife block and we cut the bread straight onto it.

Gosh reading the list of gadgets, utensils and stuff some of you have on your worktops makes my mind boggle at the size of your kitchens! Especially that you still have some free working space as well!

My envy is balanced by the thought of having to wipe/wash it all down once a week (whether it was used or not)! Each to their own eh!

We have a worktop at the end of the kitchen which has
Bread maker
Vitamix
Multi chef
Microwave

Main worktops have
kitchen scales
Toaster
Kettle

It is a battle to keep any level surface in this house clear.t

Long ago I discovered that if I put away a kitchen gadget, it hardly got used. Never seemed worth the bother of getting it out, setting up, etc. When I had my kitchen completely re-done a couple of years ago, my design actually included those things I would need to keep available on the worktop. It is only a small kitchen but works well, and still gives me space to roll out pastry, or prepare and serve meals.
All items on my worktop are in black and add to the kitchen decor.

No kettle (have a boiling water tap)
so......in one corner underneath corner wall cupboard I have
egg boiler
chocolate drink maker
slow cooker
(in corner) toaster, with butter dish in front of it
mini chopper
soup maker
bread bin
With these in place round a corner area still allows large area of worktop free for serving food, rolling pastry, etc.
In small area between fridge/freezer and hob I have
electric can opener and spoon rest
other side of kitchen close to pull out cupboard where I keep all items related to baking cakes, etc. I have
Mug tree
Food mixer
scales
Air fryer (this is next to double oven, so all that sort of cooking in one area.

karmalady Mon 08-Apr-24 06:23:36

Juicer
kettle
glass containers for teas
water filter
salt and pepper on a stand
plants in the hard-to-access corner, for them I made magenetic-backed large mirrored tiles for the tall fridge side, the plants get good light and are thriving

I have only a small built-in worktop so bought myself an eddington 3 drawer stainless top kitchen trolley. On that I have wooden chopping board and knife holder, fruit bowl and glass worktop saver for pastry etc

There is umpteen space on that trolley and everything on the shelves below is on show but all used and just requiring a dust and oiling now and then. Nice thing is that I can move that trolley and take it with me if I ever move again

I have a few bits and bobs on the sill behind the sink and 3 racks with permanent glue, holding mugs etc

I am happy with what I have for storage now, I was not at first, when I moved in but the trolley was the key. My two neighbours have bought the identical trolley , one all wood and one painted

Kettle, tea bag container, coffee jar, water filter and hand soap. There are plants on the window sills too.

I don't like too much out, but do want the basics to hand without bending down.

I have a couple of black wooden trays, on which I group things (eg the kettle, Velvetiser and frother) so they appear as one item rather than several. It looks neater and more deliberate than having lots of miscellaneous things hanging about.

Looking up Velvetiser ......
It sounds like something you wear

It makes delicious hot chocolate. Not strictly necessary, but I do love a kitchen gadget.
