Have had my lounge carpet &stairs/small landing for quite a few years- have wanted new carpet for last couple of years but the thought of having to move furniture around and physically moving stuff has put me off have procrastinated long enough so now today made a decision and looked at samples and going with a quote … now I’m extremely excited.. Excitement for me used to be planning holiday/going away or looking for new/replace old car… anyone else experienced this form of excitement over a carpet?😊

Bea, we have just put down a twist type, looks like a sort of cord, in our hall, stairs and landing, it doesn't crush or leave marks. We have an ordinary, supposedly very hard wearing one in the lounge area where we can't move the furniture as it's left big indents. It's so annoying so be wary of what you put down. Hope this helps.

If you do have an indent won't it steamback up?
Just wondering

Bea65 Wed 12-Jun-24 16:22:32

Do you mean a steam H20 vacuum or appliance?

NotSpaghetti Wed 12-Jun-24 17:34:31

I have lifted pile on things with just steam from an iron.

Might be worth a go?

Marg75 Wed 12-Jun-24 19:07:14

Thanks, I'll try that!

I am gradually recarpeting the house as I declutter. I think my late husband did not like to have any empty space, so there is a lot of stuff to get rid of.
I have put a grey carpet in the bedroom which I love, but put Karndene tiles in the sun room which I love equally. They are so easy to keep clean - it gets dirty from coming in from the garden.
My next target is the main living room. Still too much stuff, and I won’t be getting rid of the piano, so recarpeting won’t be easy. Ideally Karndene would be great, with a nice rug, but I think it may have to be carpet. No idea what colour, but one that wont show every mark.

Bea65 Thu 13-Jun-24 09:53:25

NotSpaghetti am not very bendy or mobile… in fact haven’t needed to use my steam iron in 20+years 😂

Bea65 Thu 13-Jun-24 09:54:35

Never heard of Karndene? Will google

NotSpaghetti Thu 13-Jun-24 10:02:48

If you can do it I'd maybe start with a lot of steam an inch above the carpet Bea.

Obviously I don't know what fibres are in your carpet but I'd think it was worth a go.
🤞

On the subject of carpets, I thought I'd shard these fabulous samples which ard today off to my daughter's house for crafts with her little one...
These are mainly the 😍 "Audrey" ones, mentioned earlier.

Cabbie21 Thu 13-Jun-24 11:06:19

Sorry Bea65, I mispelt Karndean. Luxury vinyl tiles- looks like wood or tiles. Yes, Google.
I have got different versions in my kitchen and hall.

Or www.karndean.com/en-gb/floors/. This is not meant to be an advert. Amtico is very similar.
This is not carpet, so apologies if it is misleading.

I agree that any new household upgrades are exciting, though the decision making and temporary chaos are hard.

I have a stripey carpet .... in brown and cream tones .... on my stairs and landing. Really realistic faux wood in the hall. I had it all done about 2/3 years ago and I am very pleased with it.
Not so pleased with our living room carpet angry because I foolishly chose a very light colour (whywhy?) and although it is moth resistant the moths in our area are definitely NOT resistant to it. We will get a new living room carpet whe we can face moving all the furniture .... and it will not be a light coloured wool!

NotSpaghetti Thu 13-Jun-24 12:48:02

Oh crikey DanniRae - that is my one big worry with wool.

We have bought a self-emptying robot vacuum for the top floor. There is no way I'd hoover up there very often (lugging Henry 3 floors).

It isn't as powerful as Henry but does go over it thoroughly 4 times a week. 🤞

Yes, Bea65 - finally replaced the 100% wool carpets in two downstairs rooms and a bedroom this last year with new 100% wool carpets.

They were about 20years old and still (remarkably) looked ok but one was starting to show wear (!) at the threshold...

We had new "quality" underlay too. Very excited.. My new carpets are beautiful. 😍

I would have liked an "Audrey" carpet by Crucial Trading really... but could neither afford nor justify it.
I've found it hard to bin the stunning sample though!
(Photos are marketing images of Audrey and the one we bought instead for our sitting room.)

That your stripey new carpet? Gosh, it's brill!

NotSpaghetti Fri 14-Jun-24 08:50:28

Mine is the narrow stripes. I fell in love with the Audrey (wide) stripes but way too expensive.

I do consider myself very lucky to have the other and it is stunning.
I admire it every day.
I suppose because we made big changes very rarely they become quite big decisions and I do tend to be happy with them for a very long time. I'd rather wait and find something as perfect as I can than go for something that isn't really "me".
Also, because my husband is colour blind, he sees things differently - so we try to find something we both love.

We were lucky in that our carpet was a large offcut. It was less than half price. At full price we bought the cheaper sibling for the dining room.
I'm keeping an eye on carpets I love for the stairs now... in the hope that they become discontinued grin

Almost afraid to post this…. Have changed my mind re carpet colour and now going with laminate flooring in lounge and hallway but so many options light/dark I’m feeling overwhelmed 🤔
Going with carpet- cannot decide colour - on stairs and landing… have samples of laminate and lovely colour catalog which is making decision very hard… the carpet fitter is very understanding about my lack of decision making… anyone else had this dilemma 😴

Doodledog Fri 14-Jun-24 21:54:19

We have hard flooring in the hall, as it is a high traffic area. The kitchen and dining room also have hard floors, with a large rug in the DR, and the sitting room, stairs/landing and bedrooms have carpet.

Whether you go for light or dark depends entirely on what you prefer. Both will be easy to clean, so you don't need to worry about light showing marks more than dark. Which would go better with your furniture?

We went with mid-colour wood in the hallway/dining room and the beige/cream carpet I mentioned upthread on the stairs and landing. I like it, but that doesn't mean you would. I know what you mean about it being difficult - it's a big expense and you'll have to live with your decision for a long time. I'm sure it will be lovely, whatever you decide, as you are choosing both areas at the same time, rather than matching one with the other.

Allsorts Sun 16-Jun-24 06:40:02

I love the stripes but I go for light plain floors. My present carpet is wool but I’m fed up with indention marks so next time it won’t be wool I’m afraid.

Bea65 Sun 16-Jun-24 13:51:51

Yes have had another re-think(3 now) and was considering laminate but think this might be too cold a flooring altho do have rugs...just back to thinking carpet..like a berber/twist type which shouldn't leave too many marks...have always had a golden rule of no outdoor shoes in house other than in kitchen..think thats why the green carpet has lasted 20yrs😮

NotSpaghetti Sat 22-Jun-24 19:10:09

Mine lasted 20 years too Bea,
It does make choosing hard if you don't do it often as it's even more important to get it right.

Bea65 Sat 22-Jun-24 23:46:15

So… have actually decided after viewing over a 100+ carpet samples and laminate flooring to go back to carpet… the fitter has been most patient with me and hopes to fit end of week … just have to try and clear room as much as possible - again the fitter had said he can work around a heavy unit -bit daunting thankful that good friend/neighbour can help 🤞

NotSpaghetti Sun 23-Jun-24 00:07:07

I'm sure it will be lovely!

Doodledog Sun 23-Jun-24 02:21:42

What colour did you go for?

Kim19 Sun 23-Jun-24 12:39:48

I'm just delighted that we can still get excitement out of anything no matter how menial. Well done you! Recently had my kitchen floor recovered. Still joyful every time I go in there. Hallelujah!

Finally feeling home is refreshed and I almost feel rejuvenated -went for graphite deluxe guaranteed for 10 years etc. and its heaven to step on ..very soft and plush...almost bouncy but not dangerously so...carpet fitter moved a few pieces of heavy furniture too so he was pleased with the extra pounds I gave him...and YES it does make me smile when i see it 😊
