Putting the heating on-or not

First, let me say that if economy is the driving force, I totally understand why people will be cautious about using energy. However, I’m always baffled by comments like not putting the heating on during specific months. If there was an Indian summer in November when in the U.K. we would usually have heating on, surely we would lower it or turn it off should the house be above our chosen temperature. So similarly, if in June it’s about 13 degrees outside, why would we NOT turn it on? Why be uncomfortable just because it’s technically summer? Our thermostat is set to ideal (to us) temperatures during different times of day and it will come on or go off whatever the date. I frequently see comments here and elsewhere about resisting putting the heating on but I just don’t get it!

We set the thermostat to what we find acceptable (really me, he's out working, I'm inside with more-than-occasional small children).

I keep fires roaring, boiler isn't working properly, currently.

It's not advisable for older people to let themselves be cold. Apart from hypothermia the blood thickens and can result in serious health issues.
It was only 13 degrees in my flat yesterday so the heating went on.
I do have sympathy for those who can't afford to pay for heating in June.

Our heating does not have an on/off switch. Just a thermostat, which is set at 18.5degrees all year. Currently it has been coming on every morning and sometimes in the evenings as well.

jusnoneed how warm or cold you feel has little to do with personal choice or experience. At school in the 1950s, when some girls were running around in their shirt sleeves, I would be wearing a sweater over my blouse and sometimes a blazer as well. Whether I like it or not I am sensitive to the cold.

A few weeks ago we did a boot sale with this current cold wind. Despite two layers, when I finished I realised I had mild hypothermia. I had, over the morning, gently cooled down until I felt cold to the core. When I got home I had a hot bath and a hot drink, until my core temperature was back to normal.

It is not that I do not like the cold, I love a walk out in the cold, providing I have sufficient layers on to keep me warm.

I also suffer from Raynauds syndrome, which is another reason for keeping warm at home and well wrapped outside.

I didn’t want to turn on the CH but I had the log burner going last night. It was so cold and windy. If I had curtains, they would have been blowing in the draft! Since I had an op recently I seem to feel the cold more. 🥶

HowVeryDareYou2 Fri 14-Jun-24 13:57:47

It's been unusually cold lately, and I put the heating on for 30 minutes this morning!

We have had our heating on in the evenings most of this week. I am miserable if I’m cold. I can’t concentrate on TV or reading either.

There was a report in our paper today about a very highly educated and well off man whose boiler needed replacing 16 years ago but he chose not to have it done. He has had no heating or hot water since then. He was found dead on his floor from hypothermia a while back.

19 degrees sitting in the evening.
I have had to put heating on now and then, it depends on whether moving around or not. It feels chilly if below 17.5 for me in the day.

We have underfloor heating , it’s great , but isn’t instantly responsive
I feel this in the bathroom , it faces east . When the heating is turned off , I keep the thermostat high there , but the rest low , it still isn’t warm in there when the thermostat in the other rooms is showing off , even though the bathroom one shows it’s working . Ok in the winter , thank good ness but not in the so called summer
Got a fill of oil yesterday , and the price is lower than last year fancythat

Yes I haven't put my heating on just because it's June. I use my heated throw a lot, don't know how I managed without it!

henetha Fri 14-Jun-24 10:40:58

Not the full CH, but a little electric fire in the living room.
Yesterday was SO cold here...
I hope not to use the CH until October.

I think I must have an wonky body thermostat! T-shirt weather for me lol. No heating on here since the start of March, most days at least one window in the living room is open, often back door is too. Bedroom one is open all year. We don't have central heating, maybe that's why we don't feel the cold as much as people seem to these days, although my OH has a heater in his bedroom.
My Grandfather would never light the fire until November, he worked as a boiler stoker at an airbase so you would think he would feel the cold when he was away from there, but never seemed to.

Athrawes

I too detest being cold especially as I'm on blood thinners and jeans and jumpers it is for me too. If its cold I'm afraid the heating goes up. The older I get the more comfortable I want to be!

Me too! The thermostat is set for 17° and it’s clicked on this morning.
I lit the wood burner yesterday afternoon and I won’t hesitate to do so again if I’m feeling cold (I am wearing three layer plus a padded gilet. In June. That is ludicrous 😵‍💫)

My heating engineer came yesterday to do the annual boiler service. I had the heating on low for the first hour but turned the thermostat right down knowing he would need to work on it. He told me his wife was also complianing it was chilly and miserable. As soon as he left I turned it back on again. I put the heating on as needed. I have arthritis and feel physically ill if I am too cold.

Pantglas2 Fri 14-Jun-24 09:36:43

I dress for the day rather than the season so if it’s jeans and jumper in June so be it!

My heating was switched on for the first time in 2 months yesterday as it was below 16 degrees in the conservatory and I won’t tolerate being cold in my own home!

flappergirl Fri 14-Jun-24 09:36:13

I've turned my heating on almost every evening this year, except for a few days in late May when it was in the 20's outside. I'm certainly no martyr to convention and I detest being cold.

Chestnut, it also snowed in Bristol on 2nd June 1975. It was only for a few hours but enough to settle on the ground. I remember it well.

Luckygirl3 Fri 14-Jun-24 09:29:53

My bedroom radiator came on by itself this morning. I was glad of it.

fancythat Fri 14-Jun-24 09:28:27

It does help that the latest lot of oil we bought, is quite a lot cheaper than previous lots.

fancythat Fri 14-Jun-24 09:27:46

We put it on if we want to.
Our trouble is, sometimes one does and one doesnt want it on, and vice versa.

We dont normally have it on during the day lately, but I did put it on yesterday. I had to unexpectedly go out. By the time I got back I was quite cold.

petra Fri 14-Jun-24 09:23:23

If the temperature drops below 21 then the heating automatically clicks on. If it happens to be June/july/ august, so be it.

Chestnut Fri 14-Jun-24 09:18:05

Normally my thermostat is set to 18C all day, but I switch it off if I think it's not needed. At the moment it's needed, because it keeps dropping down to 17C which is a bit chilly. I dress warmly, but that's too low for me.

I agree it's ridiculous to go by the date which is meaningless when it comes to temperatures. I remember in the Midlands it was freezing cold and snowed on 2nd June 1975 and then four days later was a heatwave!

kittylester Fri 14-Jun-24 09:17:49

We have hive so can regulate thermostats individually. They must be very confused as they should be having their simmer sleep but have been clicking on and off like mad.

Cabbie21 Fri 14-Jun-24 09:16:33

Same here re thermostat. I did get my son to lower the base temperature of the thermostat ( I couldn’t seem to get it right, I am useless with gadgets). So the heating comes on if the temperature drops below that number. I don’t need to “ put the heating on”.
Yes, I do put extra layers on at times, but I am fortunate to be able to afford the heating bills and will not deprive myself of heating just to be “virtuous.”

Witzend Fri 14-Jun-24 09:13:06

I put our heating on for a few hours yesterday, and I put my electric blanket on last night - ditto to both a few times lately!

yggdrasil Fri 14-Jun-24 09:09:13

My heating works on a thermostat. If it drops below the set temperature, the radiators turn on. It was on full this morning 14th when I got up. It isn't on overnight, and it was so cold last night I got a hot pad for my feet so I could sleep
