Recliner sofa and chair

I’ve recently bought a recliner sofa and chair, costing far more than I should ever have paid…..

Shocked at how it’s made my lounge look like an old people’s home.

Any suggestions?

Colourful throw / cushions?

Lace trimmed antimacassars to complete the look and give an ironic twist to your choice?

We bought a high backed recliner sofa and chairs some years ago and I just thought ‘great - comfortable’ .
Then someone commented and said it looked like furniture in old peoples’ Homes,
and I remembered that.
The next furniture we bought is reclining but much more modern. I like it better.
I agree, throws and cushions (not arm covers and those embroidered head protectors - they look dated too).

There’s some suggestions to start with from LucyAnna5 and GrannySomerset, (yours made me laugh!)
Hope you get other helpful ideas.

We’ve had recliners for ages without feeling like that, even though we bought them because of aging parents.
Sit back and enjoy.

Who cares what others foolishly say!

If you’re comfy, then grab some colourful throws, a cuppa, a book and relax thanks

My dd and Dsil have recliner sofas and they are in their early thirties! It's very 'on trend '. 😂

Where were yours from, Tilly?

We need new furniture in the 'playroom' and I fancy a reclining chair but dh keeps muttering about old folks homes.

I have recently ordered a new sofa and chair, not old fashioned but I felt the sofa needed a small throw to drape over one end and to snuggle under in the winter. Etsy have a good choice of Boho, classic or modern. Dunelm have a good selection too. I have 10 weeks to wait for delivery so have plenty of time to make a choice when I have seen the exact colour (peacock green). I am not very stylish or artistic so have looked on line for how to do the drape!
I hope you will be pleased with your new furniture, after all comfort is the main aim!

Oh Bluehooz I feel for you. Some years ago we bought a Gplan three piece suit and knew immediately it came through the door it was too big and old fashioned for us. We went to bed that evening and in the morning both said we didn’t want to go downstairs and be faced with the looming furniture. DH kept referring to it as Easter Island statues. Fortunately it proved to be faulty so we’re able to get our money back. Previous suggestions of throws are good. Fingers crossed yours might prove faulty and you could get a refund.

My friend’s son, who is 43 has just bought himself an Eames chair and footstool - he’ll be amused to think it’s more suited to a care home!

Eames are beautiful.

Reminds me of the TV programme Frasier - and his Eames / his father’s battered old recliner, patched with duct tape…..

My son has the same. In white leather. They are very comfortable, and something we thought we might consider should the need arise.

My daughter bought me a second hand burgundy leather recliner. It’s hig, it’s comfy. I have not been to an old people’s home so I dont know what their chairs look like.
I hardly use the recliner part I can easily tuck my legs in and have a nice little nap . Love it

Sounds good to me! It's what YOU like, not what other people think about it.

I keep looking at adverts for recliner chairs and walk in baths
sad. I really struggle when getting up from chairs and sofas these days. I was thinking that a black leather recliner chair would look more modern and then realised it would look like the ones dentists use!

Is it a recliner then?

NotSpaghetti Mon 05-May-25 12:21:59

I only ask as I've never seen an Eames recliner.

LucyAnna5 Mon 05-May-25 13:22:39

Eames chair

LucyAnna5 Mon 05-May-25 13:24:22

Ooops, no pic….

Georgesgran Mon 05-May-25 13:28:48

Technically no NS but it’s very laid back anatomically….

Georgesgran Mon 05-May-25 13:33:21

Well, I’ve really lost the plot now …. That was supposed to be a picture of an Eames chair!!
….

Georgesgran Mon 05-May-25 13:35:13

Right - I’m going for a lie down, or a new phone!!

V3ra Mon 05-May-25 13:43:43

Surely it's riser chairs, the ones that tilt forward and help you stand up, that resemble an old people's home, not recliners?

We love our leather recliner sofas 🤗
