Carpet Colours Are VERY Limited

Looking at carpet retailer websites is dreadfully dispiriting because the colour ranges on offer are dire.

Beige, light beige, cream, light grey, mid-grey, slate grey, brown, dark brown, black.

That's it. Have carpet manufacturers had a collective colour imagination by-pass?

There are far more interesting carpets/colours/materials than what you seem to be looking at.

The choice is limitless.

Google is your go to😊

How can y u say they are limited when there are at least 25 shades of sludge available?

NotSpaghetti Sat 10-May-25 10:48:43

I have a gorgeous striped carpet!

Not as lush as this one though:

I think you are not widening your search enough!

Good luck.

I think you need to go to a showroom, but I do agree the present trend seems to be on the boring brown side.
I bought one in the '60s - it had a lot of green and orange and was soon very out of date, so don't go too over the top.

Hmmmmm, that's more like it.

Get into a proper carpet showroom or department store like JL - plenty of choice in patterns and plains.

I’m very fond of Britton. The colours are vast and varied and all my Britton carpets have been very hard wearing.

Saying that on the ground flour I actually have large rugs, because the floor is parqueted. I have carpets from the stairs upwards.

Our local carpet shop has got lots of colours, and even animal print ones. We ended up choosing a brown/cream flecked one for the bedroom - everywhere else, apart from the stairs, has laminate or tiled flooring.

This is very smart - not colourful particularly. Would like to see it in a room.

I put light grey carpets in a couple of bedrooms, but the walls are bright colours, so grey ensures that there's no clash.

But I agree, the choices aren't necessarily inspiring. When we decorated our sitting room we kept the 30 year old carpet because it was still in quite good condition and, more significantly, we couldn't find anything we liked any better!

We always use an independent carpet shop, much better choices, quality of carpets and service. The ‘chain’ type carpet stores are there to provide mass produced carpets rather than source what the customer might want. They also don’t have their own reliable fitters and use general ones.

NotSpaghetti Sat 10-May-25 12:10:23

I think all carpets

GrannySomerset Sat 10-May-25 12:14:09

A neutral carpet allows you to reinvent everything else - walls, upholstery etc. As a good carpet will be expensive it’s worth having something that will have a longer life, surely.

NotSpaghetti Sat 10-May-25 12:14:49

I think all carpets are mass produced J52 - unless you commission a bespoke piece at thousands of pounds.

The machinery necessary for carpet production is very costly and not easy to swap about as the downtime is also very expensive.

Rugs are different and can be made more "to order".

ViceVersa Sat 10-May-25 12:17:50

True, NotSpaghetti, but we have two local independent carpet shops near us and they have a much wider range of different styles, colours and quality of carpets than the big chains do. Much better customer service too.

NotSpaghetti Sat 10-May-25 13:12:20

Yes I see what you mean. More of the "niche" brands.

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 10-May-25 13:37:45

My local independent shop supplied me with a bright striped carpet for my stairs and landing. I love it, and yes, I agree, I wouldn't want it in the bedroom.
I have neutral in the main rooms, but the stair carpet lifts my spirits every time I come home.

I'm currently looking for a new house. Not a 'new build'. So many houses I see online have a grey, black and white colour scheme. Grey carpets and walls. Some even go for a grey ceiling. I find this type of decor souless, boring and depressing.
I prefer a plain carpet and vary the colour of the walls/accessories.

I feel it is my fault![joke]. Sort of. A bit.

Well, someone who had to sign off on a development, asked for my advice on colours.
He asked, is grey still an in colour?
I said yes, as far as I know!

So a whole development has my input into it!
I am being serious.

fwiw, all my kids are into the grey/sludge/ colours as described above.

One, at the weekend, did say that the house she has just moved into, has too much white in it.
But still cant see them changing into a colour more vibarnt than sludge.

NotSpaghetti Sat 10-May-25 14:01:47

Chocolatelovinggran - maybe it's the one we chose for our sitting room?
grin

A couple of years ago we had new carpets and chose a local firm who were very good overall.
They didn’t have much choice colourwise have to say tho.It didn’t matter too much as we chose a mocha colour called oak but it seemed the more colourful carpets were only bedroom carpets.
The fitters said it was a nice change from fitting grey carpets as mainly it was all shades of grey ( 50 shades?😄) for them.

I have a beautiful denim blue living room/diner carpet and cream curtains. The sofa is cream with a narrow navy stripe, and navy cushions with a modern cream flower motif. An armchair is denim blue.,The dining table, chairs and dresser are cream too. There are blue accessories (bowls, vases, flowers and plants) to offset the cream.
The carpet complements the cream perfectly.
This might sound a little understated but it shows off my sea view to perfection and the colours blend with the view without detracting from it.
Thankfully, it’s possible to have light coloured upholstery these days as it is treated to protect it from light staining.
