Light fixture cleaning day...

Looking up at the light fixture in our spare room the other day I realized t was quite dusty, so made it my chore today to clean all the light fixtures and lamps on our main floor.

Ceiling fixtures taken apart (those that can be), washed and put back together, all lamp shades vacuumed, lamps wiped or polished. Given that each room has a ceiling fixture and one or two lamps, it was quite a job! Giving myself a pat on the back and well deserved cup of coffee now.

What chores do you have that you don't get around to very often? Or do you do light fixtures as part of a routine while you dust?

Actually, this is a job I really should be doing myself!

That's impressive. Having cataracts means I can't see dust - at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it! One is now fixed but I'm not allowed near dust til it heals

I just avoid looking up!

Glass shelves in cupboards with glass doors - especially the drinks cupboard as it is full of cut glass.

Dusting? What’s that?!

I need to defrost my rather large freezer, which has been in my garage for 20 years or more. I want to replace it with a smaller frost free model. But, just the thought tires me.
I think I will have to find a store that will deliver the new one and take away the old one…..but the timing has to be right. All food taken out from the old and transferred to the new. 🤔

In our large house there are SCORES of "routine" jobs that will never be done.

I just waft a feather duster round my chandeliers, and more eleborate light fittings now and again when dusting the room. There are only three real spiders web catchersin the house, but apart from that I do nothing.

We are taking the three elaborate fittings with us when we move, so those will probably get a through wash then, but no guarentees.

Thank goodness I have high ceilings. If I spot a cobweb I just get Henry out and he sucks them away...the dust can stay up there!

Finding it difficult to get down on my knees to clean the corners on my bathroom and kitchen floors, I bought an electric spin scrubber. It has lots of different attachments, particularly a pointed brush to get into corners. I was amazed how good it was and, once I had it in my hand I couldn’t stop. It also cleans tiles and grouting. Haven’t yet used all the attachments but soon will.

Yes they are a pain. I have chandeliers and if I don’t clean them (which means every bloomin’ droplet they loose their sparkle and look very dull. I only do them every 6 months though. The rest of the time it is a feather duster.
My other light fittings are lampshades which get brushed about once a month or so.
My bete noire are the skirtings, but that scrubber thing sounds good. Might look into that.

I flick the cobweb brush around sometimes or if i see one when hoovering it goes up the pipe.
I keep telling hubby he needs to turn off the electric so I can do the fitting in the kitchen. its a very fiddly 80s fitting landlord has put in and its grubby but never seems to be done.
I must admit that not long ago the lampshade in the lounge looked bit worse for wear so I treated us to a new one which is really nice. its so pretty its like sort of circular droplets hanging from a top piece in a rain type design. it really lets more light go into the room which is good as the room is very dark, we need the light on all day all year

Creakingandchronic, new lampshades can make a world of difference! A few years ago I realized my pleated shades in the living room were a dated shape (more triangular), so I bought new barrel shaped linen ones and it made the room look nicer.

I often admire patterned shades in magazines, but don't think my living room could pull them off!

You said it, Abracadabra😊🤣😊😉.
I look up at my light fittings. Mostly they are mundane . One or two I admire , but not , it seems , enough to clean them......

I just do them when cleaning the room, a fluffy duster on a stick thingy, seems to keep them clean.

kittylester Thu 22-May-25 20:50:52

Please explain 'cleaning the room', oreo.

Jaxjacky Thu 22-May-25 21:04:06

You’ve made me look now CanadianGran, probably time we replaced some of them actually!

Oh yes, we hard about that word HOUSEWORK but didn't like the sound of it one little bit!!!

Magenta8 Sun 25-May-25 13:47:09

Just done throws, cushion covers and voile curtains.(Grrrrr)
I deserve more than a cuppa. Where's my OBE?

Judy54 Sun 25-May-25 13:47:32

No way could I get up to clean light fixtures a quick flick with a feather duster is all L can manage. Other chores that rarely get done are cleaning down paintwork and washing inside of windows. Can cope with normal housework like dusting and hoovering but that is about it.

Light fixture cleaning day? sound a bit obsessive to me, but then I've never tried it.....

gransruleok Sun 25-May-25 14:36:53

Surely you all know the “dust if you must” poem….

After all that hard work, I would have wanted something a little stronger than coffee!

I choose not to see dust, unless the "dust rats" start to creep out from underneath the furniture, at which stage it's easy to sweep into a dustpan.
My husband doesn't think we need a cleaner and chooses to do the housework himself - good luck to him! My grandchildren have asked my daughter to buy him a special mop to remove the cobwebs that lurk in the corners of our home, he's very pleased with it, but I'm not convinced that it will see much use.
