Hot water taps

Anyone else have one of these. When I had my kitchen re-done three years ago I had one installed. Ever since I had seen an advert. for the Quooker, I had wanted one.

I did not get the quooker, but my installers put in a FRANKE. He put the actual tank away behind the kickboard, so it took up no cupboard space. Fell in love with it from the start - instant boiling water for drinks and cooking, etc.
A big filter does take space under my sink, and I read the instructions, and towards the end of 12 months purchased (very pricey), new filter. So easy to change, turn tap, unscrew and screw on new one, turn tap. All done I thought until suddenly I had only cold waterna couple of days later.

Note, not only does this system work that special boiling water tap, but also the actual hot water tap in my sink. When it does not work for any reason it means I have no hot water in the kitchen. Fortunately, I did keep a kettle.

Kitchen fitters called iback in and after about an hour on the floor and much of the time looking at their tablet they worked out that just putting on the new filter is not enough. the machine has to be hand adjusted and re-set. You really would think that modern technology would enable this to re-set itself when a new filter is installed.

One year on, I called in daughter, and = again using u-tube, she managed to get it re-set. This year she decided she is getting too old to get down that low, so brought along her youngest (14 yrs). Last year I tried to write down what she had done, obviously got it all wrong as that did not work this year. Me in a panic.....Telephone call to son-on-law (an engineer), who looked it up and directed instructions. All done now - so for next 364 days I will just enjoy using it and (almost definitely), have another panic when it all needs doing again.

Franke is not a cheap alternative to Quookers. I would like to know if quookers re-set themselves or require this sort of annual palavar. And, although I appreciate that the kitchen fitter put this tank behind the kickboard to give me more cupboard space, he was not really thinking about how I would be able to get to it for this re-set each year - although I suspect he did not know about it.

Anyone else have any makes of these - How do you get on with them

Whilst at my brothers house, I flicked on his tap to rinse my fingers- “blinking heck”, “ you have your water way too hot”
I had turned on the boiler tap 😩 put me off having one installed.

We replaced our Franke hot water tap with a Quooker about six years ago, no regrets whatsoever.

I couldn’t cope with the noise and faff of a kettle again.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 25-May-25 12:14:05

Franbern we had the Quooker engineer out to service it a couple of weeks ago, as it has a long guarantee, we only paid for his time and a new filter, worth it.

We have a Franke. Very good for arthritic hands. Much lighter than a kettle.

It is impossible to 'flick' on most boiling water taps.

Mt61 Sun 25-May-25 23:17:24

Believe me, I burnt my fingers 😩 my husband calls me asbestos hands as can cope with hot water.
I must have flicked something on it, because my sil panicked, shouting that’s the hot water tap I’d turned on
I know quooker taps work by pressing the middle down to turn it on. I am not sure what brand this was.

Are they any good for filling up a hot water bottle? Are they cheaper to run than a normal 3watt kettle?

Don’t you have to drain the little tank if you go away for any length of time?
My friend went away & it leaked all inside her cupboard, (hers is a quooker), btw.

Mt61 Sun 25-May-25 23:29:39

Well that is good to know kittylester. I just won’t be buying my brothers brand of hot water tap.
I have used the quooker brand since, & would feel quite confident having one installed, if the price was right.

Mt61 Brilliant for filling hot water bottles. Occasionally, I need one of these for medical reasons. Am always in considerable pain when I need this, so wonderful I can do it without any faffing about or waiting.
Do not understand how anyone could 'accidently' have switched this on. To use mine, a switch has to be held down with one hand, it makes it very safe to use.
I have never had to drain the tank when I go away, nor can I find anything in the instructions to do so.
Not sure about comparative costs. However, as there is absolutely no wastage, probably cheaper than the normal kettle.
Hopefully, as time goes on, they will become better priced to have installed. I do assume that I will not need to have my one replaced in my life-time!!!!!!

My daughter has a 'Quooker' tap. I have scalded myself twice, and evidently it is not good to make tea or coffee with boiling water. It should 'die back' slighly before you pour it. Also, it takes up half the space of the sink unit cupboard, and needs expensive servicing. We have a Russel Hobbs kettle -it's a perfect pourer and suits us very well.

NotSpaghetti Mon 26-May-25 11:07:25

LovesBach - I think only the Quooker one is actually boiling from the tap.

I hadn't realised that - so presumably the others are very hot but not boiling water - which sounds so much better and safer. Thank you.

The tap my brother has looks like my normal franke tap, his also has a cold water filter outlet. I’ll ask next time I speak to him what brand it was, they have moved since.
I don’t know how I managed it either but point is I did manage to turn on the boiler part.
I need to do my homework on these hot water taps- yes hopefully they will come down in price.
Also, can they use the existing hole as we have granite worktop’s & don’t want another hole drilling.

dragonfly46 Mon 26-May-25 12:38:59

I have a Quooker and when changing the filter for the cold water I just screw it in and then press a button on the top to reset it. I love mine both the cold filtered water and the boiling water. I really miss it when we go away and have to use a kettle.

I am not sure how you did this as it is quite difficult (and child proof) to turn on the boiling water.

Mt61 Mon 26-May-25 12:58:49

Nor me dragonfly46 😩

Franbern Mon 26-May-25 16:45:46

dragonfly in defence of Franke boiling water taps, I think it is much the same as the quooker one. However, my kitchen fitter put the actual small tank (where the reset button is) very low behind the kickplate, so as NOT to use up room in the actual cupboard. However, the filter is in the cupboard. It is just that the instructions are very poor, now we (or my daughter who carries this out for me) knows, will be no problem in future years.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has had one these taps for any length of time if they could say how long before they needed to renew. Not sure if they have actually been around long enough to get an answer to that. Has my kitchen all re-fitted, and had this installed back in 2022 - when I was 81 years old. I do have the attitude that anything I have done will 'see me out' - then I see other people in my flats (not retirement ones) celebrating their 90th/95th and even one hundred birthdays - and I start to wonder!!!!

Mt61 Mon 26-May-25 17:19:18

Brother used Howdens for his kitchen & unfortunately doesn’t remember what brand of boiling tap was installed.

kittylester Mon 26-May-25 17:52:30

The water from my tap is 98° - so perfect for tea.

Also good for coffee, not supposed to pour boiling water on coffee as it makes it taste bitter, apparently.

I have just come back from spraying with my chum in France. She had one of the original "Quooker" taps for the last 15 years, with no significant issues, she couldn't live without it now.

Grannyof8 Tue 27-May-25 13:57:10

We've got a Grohe which is great. It needs a new filter every 600 litres but easy to replace, though not cheap.

lizzypopbottle Tue 27-May-25 14:02:15

I've got the InSinkerator near boiling water tap. It's the best thing ever! It was way cheaper than the Quooker and takes up hardly any room. It does away with a kettle and only delivers the exact amount of water you want rather than the wasted bit left in the kettle. I love it!

knspol Tue 27-May-25 14:02:38

I have a Quooker that just gives boiling water not one of the all bells and whistles type and would not want to be without it, so useful and no hanging around waiting for a kettle to boil. It did go wrong a few months ago but that didn't affect the other taps in the kitchen and at that point it must have been at least 15 yrs old. I'm in a soft water area and engineer suggested a 3-yearly service if I find it becoming less efficient. In a hard water area I think they advise annual services. No need for me to ever change a filter.
