Ninja soup maker that is supposed to self clean. I still end up cleaning it with soap & hot water but still smells- wondering whether to soak it in Water & Milton?

Bicarbonate of soda or washing soda would do the trick.

Not particularly expensive but the number of books that are hyped up and turn out to be absolute rubbish when I buy them. Still I fall for it,

Oh very good, I do use this paste to clean my fridge, I shall try it in the soup maker to take away the odour 👍🏻

Tracey Emin's bed, which went to auction at Christie's for something in the order of £2,500,000. I could knock up a rumpled looking bed strewn with detritus well for an incy wincy fraction of the price. I mean why would anyone even want thatconfused

Mollygo Sun 13-Jul-25 20:00:19

Terribull
🤣🤣🤣 couldn’t we all produce a bed like that!

I’m with you on the books!
For me the one about crustaceans singing was a definite DNF. I like the opportunity to read a sample when buying on my Kindle, but even that’s no guarantee that the story won’t tail off into insipidity.

A great many facial moisturisers, etc. I’ve spent a wee fortune over the years on expensive ones, but have been using Nivea products for a few years now and can honestly say my skin looks as good as it ever has overall. Yes, I have a few wrinkles/creases in my eye area but I’m fine with that at 70.

Allsorts Mon 14-Jul-25 04:54:25

I think we all fall for the hype with face creams. As long as you moisturise and protect your skin from.sun it makes no difference. Aging is life style and healthy eating and good genes.
Who are these people who decide to pay money for do called art, they must have a screw loose. How did Travy Eminen get famous, that's a mystery.
Have had a clear out of most of my bulky kitchen gadgets. Never used them.
Also bought too many clothes which I swore I wouldn't after a massive clear out last year. My shape has altered and my skin tone yet I'm forever drawn towards them.

Dyson vacuum cleaner. Cyclone? Could have fooled me - nothing to shout about but Sir Jim Dyson has been laughing like a drain all the way to the bank for years.

Large vegtrugs made from charcoal coated metal. The original vegtrugs that are a V shape. Bought 4 of them 6 years ago, to use as 2x2 dividers on my very large patio. Filled each with around 7-8 heavy bags of compost but they all became deep down hot and dry inside.

Far too much effort required to grow anything plus too much water and the soil still remained bone dry below the surface. Plants hated living in them

I have just finished removing two, the last two will go in a few months. They were not at all worth the cost plus the work required to build them plus the money I spent on compost and refilling. That plus the sheer effort in trying to keep plants alive. All that plus the awful amount of effort and work in removing them, all that `soil` and then the dismantling and tip runs

I feel that the trend for corrugated metal planters will go the same way, very hot summers and drought are here to stay

Gosh karmalady what a palaver!
I hope you find something more suitable.

I can't think of an expensive item I've ever bought that "didn't live up to the hype" - maybe because I don't tend to be responsive to hype...

I did find Niagra Falls to be underwhelming though.
It would not have felt underwhelming if I'd just happened upon it as walking along a track through the wilds though!
It is a wonder ruined totally by going to look at it!
Certainly doesn't live up to the hype.

Jane Birkin handbag.

Another vote for - Expensive skin creams

BlueBelle Mon 14-Jul-25 07:59:32

I don’t think I ve bought any expensive items so I haven’t had a problem ! 🤣🤣 but ….
I bought about 8 years ago a faux leather settee and chair it was expensive to me ! Probably not to you, average price but the one arm of the chair has lost its ‘leather’ in parts I can’t complain as the shop no longer exists and I don’t still have the invoice etc so will have to live with it It’s not hugely noticible but is to me and irritates me. ( I don’t like those material arm things people put on chairs so that’s not an option)

I bought a Silent Night fan.
Silent it definitely is not
And it couldn’t fan away a moth.

TerriBull Mon 14-Jul-25 09:59:21

Aside from the Tracy Emin bed, which I just knew I could replicate with ease and the Birkin handbag, I'm so over handbags, and with too many that never see the light of day, I restrained myself to be drawn into a bidding war over either, life's too short, plus the small matter of not having the funds the time to persue acquiring a fatuous load of old garbage the need to have stuff so overpriced and so unnecessary. On a more personal note, when we moved house, I was seduced by various advertisements for Loaf sofas, I liked the look sumptuous and squashy I thought, so we bought one for the new house, I chose it to be covered in a beautiful jade material, I love looking at it, sitting on it nah! it's probably the most uncomfortable one we've ever bought. I prefer sitting on a Marks one, larger really comfy at half the price.

Jo Malone perfumes just don't last.

nanna8 Mon 14-Jul-25 11:17:15

Dyson stick vacuum. Useless.Got a new charger. Still useless. However,I think I was unlucky because others seem to like them.

Allira Mon 14-Jul-25 11:25:37

Kenwood Chef. It's very heavy which means it's good quality, I suppose.
However, the cake mix goes all up the sides of the bowl, it needs scraping down every few seconds and the mixer doesn't detach to use as a hand mix. The liquidiser attachment is good quality too but needs someone with muscles like Fatima Whitbread to lift it on and off.
I wish I'd bought another far less expensive make.

Shows how different we all are, I love Niagara falls. The American falls and the Bridal Veil are pretty, but the Horseshoe falls are wonderful. All that power of nature, and a boat trip right into the Horseshoe is a great experience in my opinion.

I quite like the Dysons we've had although the rechargeable ones are not easy to empty.
And they sent me a new battery free when I said "How much? shock, I'll put that towards buying a different make!".

Face creams here too - watched Queen Camilla's beautician on Lorraine featuring her Nettle Venom facial and got sucked in and bought a little jar for £80 that smells awful and does nothing 😠
