Problem with Fitted Sheets

Does anyone have a successful method for making a bed with fitted sheets that have elastic all round? I mean, how might I identify the narrow end without trial and error, which is very tiring.

I sew a knot of contrasting thread in the middle of the ‘top’ end - once I have established it!

The answer is always obvious….once a clever person has pointed it out! Litterpicker thats genius!

Litterpicker, please let's have the details of how you do so. How big is the knot and where ( near the elastic or 12 inches into the sheet)? Can one buy little bows or something like what knickers sometimes have so the front can be identified?

My favourite fitted sheets are wildly patterned and would need a really conspicuous marker . There really should be something I could buy like a big satin made-up bow.

Mine have a label in them, I put that at the bottom left.

I bought some of these from Amazon for hand towels...I'd think you could use something similar to mark sheets?

Caleo Fri 18-Jul-25 11:19:20

There is nothing suitable on Amazon. I have decided to sew a large scrap of thin cotton cloth near the elastic at the bottom end which is the end I always try to fit first . Obviously I will have to do so with the sheet in situ which will mean undoing the thing at one corner.

I keep a sharpie on the shelf and check that the side marking has not worn off befit I remove the sheet. The marking lasts for multiple washes, but it’s always worth checking.

Oh is that what those little bows on knickers are for*Caleo*🙂

Caleo Fri 18-Jul-25 11:22:20

Thanks Dee , but those would not go in the washing machine

Caleo Fri 18-Jul-25 11:23:17

Mollygo, what is a sharpie?

Caleo Fri 18-Jul-25 11:25:17

I suppose it's an indelibl marker. That would be the way to go. If it doesn't stain what is in the washing machine?

Mollygo Fri 18-Jul-25 11:26:20

Sharpies are indelible marker pens.
Accidentally using one on the whiteboard at school caused me endless problems.

I have awful problems with fitting fitted sheets on the mattress , I’ve resorted to using king sized on my double bed , but it wrinkles

Thanks Dee , but those would not go in the washing machine

I've had them on my towels for some time now and to be honest, none have come off in the washing machine.
Hope you find a solution though.

Thanks Mollygo. I just bought a chisel tip one from Amazon

Astitchintime Fri 18-Jul-25 11:56:16

I make my own fitted sheets as commercial ones are never deep enough. And I also attach some coloured tape on the ‘short side’ so I always know that it’s either top or bottom.

Caleo Fri 18-Jul-25 11:57:37

BTW. Mollygo, did you iron the mark to make it even more indelible?

Lathyrus3 Fri 18-Jul-25 11:58:52

I thought the label was always sewn in the bottom left hand corner (looking from the top of the bed down as if you’re lying on it).

It’s always worked for me.

Caleo Fri 18-Jul-25 12:00:49

Astitchintime, there seems to be a gap in the market for marked sheet ends, and for deep enough side widths. Will we be seeing you on Dragons Den?

Caleo Fri 18-Jul-25 12:01:45

Lathyrus, I never knew that!

ExDancer Fri 18-Jul-25 12:13:15

I've been using a permanent marker for years

Fairislecable Fri 18-Jul-25 12:14:53

Lathyrus3 I use the same method with all my fitted sheets (from King of Cotton) but I always put the label at the top right when you are lying down.

I don’t know if this works with other sheet manufacturers.

I make my own fitted sheets as commercial ones are never deep enough. And I also attach some coloured tape on the ‘short side’ so I always know that it’s either top or bottom.

I’ve recently had to buy deeper fitted sheets for a king size, after acquiring a mattress topper.

Ditto for an armless sofa bed always shared by the Gdcs. We’ve always used a quilted protector for padding, plus a quilted waterproof on top, in case of accidents. And until I bought the deeper sheet, we were having the devil of a job getting the bottom sheet on. Goodness knows why I didn’t think of it before!

No. I never iron sheets (I send them elsewhere to be ironed.)
