I've done it again!

I've just collected the washing from the basket upstairs, carried it downstairs and loaded the machine. Added detergent and conditioner. Selected the programme. Turned around and there it is ... the one sock that didn't make it. I grab it, turn back just as I hear the machine door lock. Please tell me I'm not the only one who does this.

All the time 😩

That’s probably because the water level is too high Welshpoppie

Once I hear it clunk and it locks there's no opening it, even if it hasn't started filling with water.

my dear OH fetches the washing for me and its like a trail when he does. Pair of knickers on the landing, sock on the stairs, bra on the bannisters and t shirt in the lounge!

Nannan2 Fri 31-Oct-25 14:13:53

Maybe the washer really does eat them🤔🤣

Nannan2 Fri 31-Oct-25 14:12:43

We never did find the missing ones even when packing/unpacking..Gawd knows what he did with them.& yes he's an adult.😆😁

When we moved house i sorted my sons stuff- he had 54 separate 'spare' socks with no partners, and 18 pairs.

Nannan2 Fri 31-Oct-25 14:08:00

Welshpoppy, do we have the same washer? 🤔Mines a Candy.

Barb22 Fri 31-Oct-25 14:07:07

Nannan2 Fri 31-Oct-25 14:04:19

Pause button still wont release lock- not on mine anyway..Which are the washers which let you open it then? Please. (I am always finding stuff once its started)

All the ruddy time, then it’s a race to get to missed sock before our cocker spaniel runs off with it!

My net bag lives in the 'clean sock drawer'. Washed and dried odd socks are dropped into the bag until their partner appears (usually from inside a duvet cover - even though I close the bottom of the cover - socks still wriggle in!).

JackyB Fri 31-Oct-25 09:01:24

I have a net bag hanging near the washing machine and I have a rule that I can drop socks into it only in pairs. As I sort the washing every day it is not really likely that a pair gets separated.

My machine also allows for opening the door and adding things up to a certain point in the cycle. But if I'm too late with anything, it's no big deal. I'll be doing that kind of wash again some time soon.

aggie

My machine gives me a ten minute window where I can add the sock
At least it seems about that time ,I t won’t open if the water has started to heat I think

Mine too thankfully.

I had the great top loader which I much preferred and was not only great to be able to add missed items, but also safe. A friend had a front loader and came back from work one day to find the kitchen full of water as her front loader had broken and all the water emptied into the room. However sadly, where I live now cannot have a top loader, which is a shame. It used to give me a sense of satisfaction and pleasure for that short time, when you know that you are clean and so is all your laundry, and smelling lovely from drying outside, but with a family that didnt last long, before the laundry basket was filling up again. Now living alone , still good to see clean washing, but these days there seems to me more of those dratted borrowers about, as somehow single socks along with biros and combs seem to disappear, and cant even blame anyone else nowadays. !!

No you're not the only one but in my defence when I do miss a sock, it's usually because our Cockapoo has it in her mouth.

snap! It's so annoying.

Erica23 Thu 30-Oct-25 18:58:03

Yep me too. I just turn it off at the mains then it’ll open after a minute or two.

Bukkie Thu 30-Oct-25 18:00:01

I think we all do it. My new machine has an "Add" option for a couple of minutes. I also get outside to the line and am missing a sock and it's still in the machine.

My husband's well worn joke to say I've dropped my knickers on the way downstairs. You are not alone WelshPoppy

😂 that’s why on reaching the bottom of the stairs I always look back up. I also have to look back at the turn in the stairs.

LadyGracie Thu 30-Oct-25 17:13:43

My Samsung has a pause button and it’s well used.

Do you not have a pause button? Usually button with two lines, could be near your on/off switch.

I do have a pause button but it won't unlock the door once it's locked.

WelshPoppy Thu 30-Oct-25 16:58:28

My washing machine is about 6 years old and not an expensive make. There is a facility to stop the programme and open the door to insert dropped items. That is frequently used in this house!
Alternatively you could bring dirty laundry to the machine in a basket. Then you’re less likely to drop anything!

Once mine is locked, it's locked. Don't have room to store a basket.

It's not a programme on mine, I just press the stop button. And then repress to start it again. But, as someone said upthread, that doesn't work for long.

MiniMoon Thu 30-Oct-25 16:07:13

It used to happen here but my new washing machine has an add item feature. As long as the button is lit you can pop in the stray sock.
