Didn't realise people used them before the days of car seats etc; I suppose I've only been aware of them over the past few years, but they do seem to have existed for longer than I realised.

Because there was a Baby on Board sign on the back window of the car, I'm guessing!

We had a "Baby I'm Bored!" sign instead.

I hope they do not leave a baby on board sign in the window when the baby is not in the car.
Myself and my wife helped with an accident going back years before the days of child seats and mobile phones.
An open roofed car rolled over an embankment and the woman driver was knocked out.
I was a first aider but as it happened there was a doctor in the car behind so my wife went to phone for help, the doctor attended to the woman and I went to look for the baby as there were other embankments etc.
An ambulance and police car arrived a few minutes later and the police man joined me in the search.
After I had been looking for about 20 minutes and got my trousers in a mess and the police man's trousers got mess on them the woman came around and told the ambulance man the baby was not in the car.
Really what happened to us was relatively minor but we could have fell over damaging ourselves and the doctor did say it would have been better if I had been available to help him rather than being on a wild goose chase.

About a year later a coach went over an embankment in front of me.

When my twin girls were beng brought home from hospital, we had parents babysitting the older two, and not enough room for two carrycots till we changed the car, so we got a black cab and carried one each. Ex-DH managed to knock his baby's head on the door as he struggled to climb out of the taxi! Fortunately, she was ok, but I could have murdered him!

Our firstborn came home in a carry cot on the back seat of the car. I can't quite remember how we got no 2 home. I think DD was too small for a car seat at the time. I think it was DHs car we could probably have got DSs car seat and the carry cot on the back seat.

I hadn't better tell DD I cannot remember such an important event with her. I am always getting teased by her that I don't remember lots of things about her as a baby.

I remember our first Britax for firstborn, when the car (Ford Anglia too) had to go to the garage for the fitting and have holes drilled all over it, at vast expense. My MiL said "Oh I don't think that looks like a very good idea". I also remember him rolling out of the carrycot on the backseat when he was really tiny (he is now forty-two and seems fine) because the seats only worked from about six months.

I remember having to use a knee when the child got heavier. Sort of, shove under bum. Hated getting that job!

I shudder at the memory of getting a squirming infant into one of those early Britax egg-shaped seats, in the back seat of a two-door Austin 1100.

whenim64 so much easier than the one's I had for DGSs poor mr.g used to get himself in such a tangle fitting them in mind it was a mini so not much room.

It was one of those Isofix click on attachments that doesn't need tangling up in seatbelts.

It was amazing how easy their's was!

We remarked on that, jingle. Those things are a nightmare until you get the hang of it. At least he didn't have to collapse a buggy and try to shove it in the boot under the word's gaze.

They took the little feller () home from hospital in a baby seat. Prince William looked very relieved that he didn't make a hash of putting it in. I think he must have been practising!

I sat in the front passenger seat of our Ford Anglia - no seat belts then - with my firstborn on my lap. We stopped outside MacFisheries to get something for supper and DH dangled the baby out of the window so the lady in the next door shop could get a good look.

Somehow we all survived!

Oh just give it up - they did everything by the book and it was good to see William driving his wife and child home - not in a Bentley!
