Socks and other rip-offs

I needed to replace my walking socks. Everyday wear in the winter. Outdoor shops seem to be running some kind of price fixing cartel on the ones containing lots of wool. £15- £17 a pair seems a lot of money for something that is produced so quickly by machine. And they do wear out and shrink a bit I think. Got three pairs of synthetic ones in a shop called Trespass for a fiver a pair yesterday. (half price) Very happy feet.
It's a crazy markup they must be charging on these things isn't it.
Those Buff scarf-like things are also outrageous (about £30 for a small stretchy tube of fabric) - but at least you can admire the entrepreneurial flair of the company that have made them a classic item.
And don't get me started on Crocs - £30 or more for a pair of plastic sandals - again very cheap to produce.
What else do you think is wildly overpriced?

Jeans with a "designer" label! Denim is denim is denim, probably all made in the same sweatshops anyway.

I agree about the cost of walking socks Jess, though I have found the smart wool ones last, wash well and best - you don't need to wash them every day so holidays that include walking boots and socks involve less packing (or washing)

Multi-pack socks are a rip-off anyway - what if you don't like them and you are stuck with 2 or even 4 more pairs?

Phoenix, my nephew turned up here the other night very pleased with his scarf: "Auntie, it's Valentino!" Just a long piece of cloth with "Valentino" woven into it in big letters. And it cost a small fortune

Keep an eye out for Aldi's walking socks, when they have an event. I bought the same pairs £2.99 in Aldi when they were £13 in an outdoor sports shop! That what I call a mark up! X

I have the silk thousand mile ones. They are fantastic and last me years

Decathlon socks are comfortable and affordable.

DH and DS both wear boots for work. They buy 'dickies' from aldis which are wool mix. Less than a fiver for a two pack.

Grannyknot in some ways that's worse! I remember a chap who was so proud of his Ralph Lauren sweatshirts with the name emblazoned across the front. I would want to be paid to go around looking like a walking advertisement, rather than being ripped off!

Icyalittle Sat 22-Mar-14 18:22:04

phoenix I quite agree. I refuse to be a free walking advertising space. (I feel the same about silly slogans on tops, that you pay more for). I do find I wear through the synthetic socks though, while DH's wool flying ones have seemingly lasted for about 40 years! But boy, are they thick. I would need bigger boots to wear them.
What really gets me is the cost of laser printer toner cartridges. They cost more than a new printer, which is ridiculous. But new ones only come with reduced size cartridges so......

JessM Sat 22-Mar-14 18:30:11

Oh my lord yes, cartridges, barrel, over....

Grannyknot Sat 22-Mar-14 18:47:41

Yep. Printer cartridges take the biscuit.

I've always thought that spectacle frames are vastly over priced. After all they are only metal and plastic, and to add a designer name as well!!

papaoscar Sat 22-Mar-14 19:31:07

Batteries and light-bulbs in their multi-packs and multi-prices. It used to be so much simpler in the old days. Now you need a degree in physics and a brain like a calculator to cope.

I too buy my walking socks from Aldi great value for money and wash and wear well. My last cost £1.99 in their post Christmas sale.

JessM Sat 22-Mar-14 21:52:59

Yes I had a quote for a pair of rimless varifocals : £750

Icyalittle Sun 23-Mar-14 09:30:31

My glasses cost that too JessM . About as much as a small car. (Which I wouldn't be able to drive without glasses of some variety). It does give me pause though when small DGS grabs them.

Designer sea salt. Or salt from the Himalayas. Another rip off. Its all sodium chloride.

I'm not sure Crocs are overpriced. They last a very long time. I'm still hard wearing some I bought six years ago. Plus they are extremely comfortable. I don't mind paying for comfort which can be very hard to find in shoes, and always has been for me. I have healthy feet; that's why I'm fussy; I want to keep them that way.

Buffs are also dead useful. I use them all the time. They did not cost £30. Prob half that. Again, they'll last for yonks.

Most All good quality items of clothing cost a lot, but you still have them ten and twenty years on so in the end...

Re wool rich socks, Bridgewater are good and last well. You want at least two thirds (preferably three-quarters) wool content if you are to get the real benefit of wool's insulating properties. Less than that is not worth bothering with; you might as well just go synthetic.

thatbags Mon 24-Mar-14 07:16:16

So we can't buy cheap because that's not fair to factory workers and we can't buy not cheap because that's a rip off. Never happy, us.

thatbags Mon 24-Mar-14 07:16:51

I agree about posh salt. that's just laughable.

Bread - our local bread, made from wheat grown on the Island, processed on the Island, baked on the Island costs around £1.75 for a standard loaf. Thank goodness the Co-op and Tesco moved here smile

glammanana Mon 24-Mar-14 08:11:12

Holly I bet the local bread tastes far better than the supermarkets though smile

HollyDaze Mon 24-Mar-14 08:20:08

It doesn't glammanana, it tastes just the same (but thicker sliced - the Manx seem to like doorstep slices) - you'd pay extra if it tasted like home-made wouldn't you smile. I was nearly forced to have to make my own blush

glammanana Mon 24-Mar-14 08:30:51

What a shame Holly I wonder if that is where mr.glamma gets his liking for doorstop slices as he spent a huge time on the Island when he was young, his family ran Ice Cream Parlours and where from Onchan.
