Credit Card Protection or Not?

I always had assumed that you had a certain amount of protection when you paid using your credit card. However I have recently learnt that this does not always hold. I paid for a week in a holiday cottage using a card, using a reputable holiday cottage company. The cottage was not as expected and a huge amount of building work was going on next door. I complained straight way, sent a written complaint when we returned early. The firm refunded £200 which they obtained from the owner. I did not feel that this was sufficient and so complained to the card company. However in small print the holiday letting company say that the contract is with the owner, not them so we have found that we have no redress apart from going to the small claims court. This is very disappointing as I have read so many times that you have some protection if you book with a credit card. Of course not when you need to make a claim!

Not covered if you get compensated (in any amount) by the company or it's associates about whom you complain.

We booked flights to the Caribbean with Thomas Cook using my HSBC credit card. Within a week of the company crashing the money was back in my account. Well done HSBC.

I too had return flights from Greece with Thomas cook and had paid by debit card as I rarely use a credit card. Santander have chargeback facility and my money was credited 2 weeks after I’d completed the form.

I would only expect the credit card company to cover me if the holiday company went bust. The issue you have is with the company you hired the cottage from. If they offered you recompense and it was not enough you should have challenged them. The way I see it, this not the responsibility of the credit card company. You should give your Travel Insurance company a call and ask if you can claim from them. If not, your argument is with whomever you hired the cottage from.

Credit card payment protection is an optional insurance program that allows you to put your card's minimum payments and fees on hold following certain life events. Payment protection may help your credit card here account remain in good standing even when something unexpected occurs.
