Do I need a landline?

Since the Bodach died I’ve been reviewing my finances, and I’m paying BT £102 per month for landline, broadband, my mobile, and BT Sport ( £22.50 which will definitely be going!)
Sons are asking why I need a landline, and I must admit that all I seem to get on it are calls from Microsoft and similar trying to con me out of money. Has anyone else done away with their landline, but can still get broadband?

Like some others I protect my mobile number and only divulge it to friends or when forced for some reason. RBS still haven't won their very long winded and sometimes quite threatening campaign to get it from me ,though.Hence I rarely get cold calls on it.

I have a landline because
a) if I forget to charge my mobile , or can't find it (!) then the landline is there.
b) I have a landline phone which intercepts numbers not in my 'phonebook' and I can choose whether or not to accept the calls. So I never have to answer cold calls on it either.

Landline and 4g broadband cost around £28 pm, mobile ( SIM card only) is about £8pm

We have just given up our landline, as we hardly ever use it, only two people ever ring on it,but we dont live in the UK.I am wondering how much it will cost for me to ring a landline in the UK for instance calling a firm,Bank etc I feel it will cost a fortune. We have fiber broadband but this doesnt help my problem,I am imagining being on hold for ages and the bill mounting up, I wish we still had our landline.

My husband is waging a campaign to eliminate our landline and I am fighting him!

As has been said, if there is a problem with electricity, the mobile signal could disappear.

We each have a mobile and are much better at charging and keeping them switched on but I still want my 'house 'phone'.

Mobiles can easily be lost, left behind or not charged when needed in an emergency.

Long live landlines!

When you cancel the BT sport ask them to look at your plan, you may be able to do better with them than currently and then also looknat other suppliers.

Was very glad of our landline yesterday as had a power outage which went on most of the day and took out the mobile phone mast too. We hardly use our landline but living in a rural area with overhead power cables, power cuts happen fairly often (more so lately it seems due to lack of maintenance!) and then a landline comes into its own, so I guess personal circumstances are the main thing to consider.

Not had a landline for over 3 years. I have Wi-Fi using s tiny box from Three. Unlimited data for £22. My Tesco mobile will be SIM only for £12 From next Spring when contract ends. My vintage black telephone is just decoration now smile

Only trouble with giving up the land line is if you need an emergency lifeline - you know - a red button round your neck to press if you live alone and fall or have a medical emergency. There are clever sensors too to give people independence at home for as long as possible eg a sensor under the mattress which automatically contacts a call centre if you are out of bed for a long time at night (may have had a fall on the way to the loo). The call centre can then call the person on a speaker phone and ask if they are OK. (if not next of kin or ambulance summonsed) I don't think this service is yet possible without a land-line.

This is often the case. When looking for new deals, it’s cheaper to have all of them. Tv. Broadband. Phone line

PinkCakes Wed 19-Aug-20 10:09:42

I've just noticed that the OP posted this in March, so she may have got things sorted out by now......

Davida1968 Wed 19-Aug-20 10:06:47

I'm a big fan of our landline though we both have mobiles. If the electricity goes off for hours/days, for whatever reason (as it did in our area, some years ago) then you may scuppered if you rely only on mobiles! (And even with a landline, you may need to keep an old-fashioned "plug-in" phone on hand, because the cordless ones can become useless after a few hours of no electricity.) Also phone overseas calls can be easier/cheaper with a landline. (Not everyone wants to make "video calls"!) I guess it all comes down to your particular contracts and what you require from your phone, but I wouldn't be without the landline.

I have landline , broadband , unlimited calls to landlines and mobile with Sky for £30 per month . I also have my own smart phone which is on a PAYG with Tesco mobile and costs just 4p per text . I don’t need data on my mobile as I use the internet from my landline for WhatsApp. ect ect I think having a mobile is important for when you go out as you can always be in contact if needed .

Angeleyes58xx Wed 19-Aug-20 10:01:22

Daddima, I use talk talk and pay for my telephone line but get free broadband, which works well for me no where near your £104. Good luck in finding something that suits your budget, you have to look around for the cheapest in your area.

Mauddib Wed 19-Aug-20 09:57:35

Landlines are a total con. I am with virginmedia and asked to get rid of the landline. The way these companies work is that it's cheaper to keep the landline if your already with them. So instead I said OK then I am up for a new contract and BT are offering a much better price for new customers so what can you offer me. Reduced my bill from £52 down to £35 a month. That is just broadband and telephone line. I don't pay for Sky or virgin or BT TV and just use Freeview. I find the paid tv is not worth it and with Netflix and others it's cheaper to get them.

PinkCakes Wed 19-Aug-20 09:53:34

Daddima How much?! That's a lot!

I've got the landline and broadband on Sky, no tv package (bought a Freesat box for £100). I pay £30 a month.

My mobile is with Three (sim only, I'd already got a second-hand 'phone) and that's £13 a month.

It IT possible to have broadband without a landline, though.

I know this is an old thread but it has just popped into my inbox. I have plusnet just for broadband and i bought a Portal from Argos which i run through Whatsapp and i do video calls on that it works like a landline. I also have a mobile phone.
But i would recommend plusnet broadband only no landline and you may get a cashback deal - i got £75 when i moved to them.

winterwhite Wed 19-Aug-20 09:49:05

Well I never, what an interesting thread! We both have mobiles which we use if out and about but has never occurred to us to abandon landline. Never carry my mobile with me all round the house so would constantly miss calls, not always a blessing.

Liz46 Wed 19-Aug-20 09:48:47

I prefer to speak with my daughters on the landline. One of them in particular is busy so when she is on her mobile, I find it difficult to understand her as she does jobs and forgets to hold the phone steady!

seacliff Wed 19-Aug-20 09:42:10

I like talking on a "proper" phone, instead of my mobile especially for long chats. However we pay a lot of money for phone, broadband etc. We have been tied to BT as we are out in the sticks, with terribly low BB speed, and no other option.

However finally we are getting fibre broadband, so when that is all working, I will be shopping around. I might then decide to ditch the landline, depending on costs.

polnan Wed 19-Aug-20 09:35:59

I thought we had no option but to pay the BT landline fee,,
I pay through Plusnet, the annual fee for the landline, around £200 I think it is,, then Plusnet £16.50 a month covers the landline calls, (not mobile calls) as many as a like, though I am not a phone freak, praps I am a phone freak, I am not comfortable speaking on the phone..

I have freesat tv... (we can`t get freeview here) just have to buy the box..

and I do have two mobile phones, one very ancient, and one inherited from deceased husband,, (a simple one) I hate texting.... I do not like mobiles at all, but occasionally I have to use it.. I use GiffGaff for the mobiles, pay as I use, I have a £10 float which is automatically topped up when below £3.00

oh the plusnet covers my broadband, I love my computer and emails..

so I pay out the annual fee for the landline, which I understand is compulsory,,

£16.50 a month, and whatever use I put the mobiles to, which is negligible

No landline phone for 12 years, both of us mobile only. Pay Sky for broadband and Sport (includes landline rental to BT as Sky use it, still on copper). I’d be bereft without my mobile!

Clio51 Tue 18-Aug-20 13:33:09

Your paying to much

Are you confident enough to ring them and tell them your paying to much and can not now afford it ?

We have Bt
We have Bt sport, highest internet fibre 2 and landline after 6pm and weekend free calls
I did it for us at £42 mth for 18mths

I just rang up and said I can’t afford current price
They said let me see what we can do

An awful lot of people just keep paying what there told, never ringing them up or going on a price comparison site
For things like
House insurance
Car insurance
Gas/electric

They just accept the price, or stick with one company because they think it’s the best. Most insurance companies use the big named ones as underwriters anyway

You could save hundreds
You just need to make the effort

Maggiemaybe Tue 26-May-20 17:35:20

I’ve just noticed that this is an old thread, so you’re probably all sorted now with a cheaper deal. smile

Maggiemaybe Tue 26-May-20 17:34:18

You’re paying an awful lot, Daddima. Our Plusnet charge for the landline and unlimited broadband is £23 a month (which goes up to £33 after 18 months), and my mobile sims only deal (Tesco), for more data, calls and texts than I’ll ever need is £7.50.

We only need the landline for two people who use pay-as-you-go and say it’s too dear to ring us on our mobiles.

Brahumbug Tue 26-May-20 17:08:10

If you have a good 4g signal then you don't need a landline for internet. We have homefi from Three which uses the 4g, £22.5 a month for unlimited internet.

Mobile reception is too unreliable in our area to dispense with our landline.

I prefer to have both and keep mobile only for friends and family. It really infuriates me when my phone goes when I am out and it is some advertising call. All business calls, for online shopping, energy companies etc go to the landline, likewise all the scam/spam messages - and they are frequent.

Personally, I loathe using mobile phones for anything but phone calls and text messages, although I do use google maps. The minute size of the screen, sub-letterbox size and I find the keyboard frustrating. I have limited feeling in my finger tips on my right hand and getting the right pressure on the screen, whether typing or erying to navigate the system is frustrating.
