Carrying Cash or just Bank card

Heard on TV that people more and more are not carrying cash at all and paying for goods and services via card.
What do GNs feel about having cash or now don't? I have small coin purse which I use for the hair salon tip but apart from this, I don't tend to use cash. Do GNs feel safer out in public without cash?

I use a card or contactless for nearly everything now. We still pay the window cleaner in cash, though.

During the summer hols when Gdcs were staying, I was surprised to find that even the people who ran the big bouncy castle and other rides in the town centre, accepted contactless. Ditto the man with an old fashioned carousel in the market place - but he did charge less for cash - £2 instead of £3.

I rarely need to use cash. Use my card 99.99% of the time

Some of our carparks allow payment by Ringo but it adds to the cost so we use cash. Others accept card so we use that and then there’s the cash only ones.

Our car parks all allow payment by app Ringo or paybyphone so no cash needed

My DD has visited us and over three days we needed five car parks. Only one took cards. We ran out of the right money and ended up spending more as Gabrielle56 said.
We have a local ‘general’ shop and they won’t take card payments under £5.

You can still use the old £20 until September 2022

Elvis58 Sun 03-Oct-21 14:15:09

No cash here.

Always ask for the contactless feature to be removed when card is being replaced. Don't trust them (or me!). Always keep two cards active in case one bounces. Has happened, albeit mechanical error. Never close to my limit. Never tip a hairdresser. They set the price. I pay up in full without question. Spent all my working life in the financial arena. Enlightening indeed.

I always have cash and still pay for a lot of things with cash. I don't like how things are going, it's like we are being told how to run our finances. I know a lot of us elders feel safer using a card and that's good. I still go into the BS every week to draw out how much cash I need, that's what I like to do at the moment.

Some car parks only take cash.

Don't they just! And always an odd amount, with no change given either in some. I went to one befor lockdown that charged 60p(!) For first hour, then £1.30(!) For2+ then £5.20 (!)all day.......no change so call it £1/£2/£6 why -don't -they?! Theft by stealth.......

Think I've had the same two fivers in my wallet for well over a year now

Me too. I call them my 'lucky fivers' and joke that I'm saving them for when they're worth £20!!!

Gabrielle56 Sun 03-Oct-21 09:56:51

I've not carried cash for years! Always keep bank card in phone case and phone in jeans front pocket-good luck to anyone trying to get at it there! I can just about get it out meself! Safe as-well safe as me tight jeans!

I have both but tend to use cards wherever I can. One of my local shops and my hairdresser prefer cash as they are charged for card transactions and they try to keep their prices low.

Diggingdoris Sun 03-Oct-21 08:59:03

I like to carry both. My local chippy only accepts cash, my window cleaner wants cash, and if I go in a charity shop for a couple of books they usually have a £5 limit for card payments.

"The Bank of England has announced that the old notes will go out of circulation on 30 September 2022. This mean you will not be able to use the notes in shops, but you will be able to exchange them for new notes. Some banks and the Post Office may also accept them if you wish to deposit them into your bank account." News

Esspee, yes, for exactly that reason. Besides which if you don’t use your PIN you forget it.

Last week I went out with my bank card. I had it going into the underground but on returning home I couldn’t find it. Cue absolute panic. Anyone could have been using it for contactless payments of up to £45 a time all afternoon.

I called and cancelled it then waited to be put through to a member of staff who checked and thankfully the card hadn’t been used. This month I believe the limit for contactless payment goes up to £100 a time so I requested my replacement card had that facility removed.

It will be slightly less convenient having to enter my PIN number but so much more secure.

Anyone else thinking of doing this?

welbeck Sun 03-Oct-21 05:50:33

why would people not tip their hairdresser ?
and why assume that if traders take cash only that they are involved in tax evasion.
that is a slur.
some may be, but it's not right to cast aspersions on everyone.

Just need cash for Waitrose car park but during pandemic stores would only take contactless

Naninka Sat 02-Oct-21 23:50:01

I keep a bit of cash in my purse but, tbh, it's gathering dust!

On the subject of cash I got a lot of cash from the post office at the start of the pandemic and I’ve realised many of the £20 notes are old ones which need to be replaced. Does anyone know if shops are still accepting the old ones? It’s only when I gave one to DH to pay for something that I realised I had so many.

We were the same and then we were shopping on line or no one wanted cash!! I'm using them on rare supermarket trips - used one last week at the self checkout and it was accepted.

AlisonKF Sat 02-Oct-21 22:18:09

I have to take a bus for seven miles to get any cash as the post offce has closed in this village. I get out the day maximum for my card (£250..00) which lasts a bit usually.
However, in one week I shelled out £50 to the home hairdresser for a perm, £30 to the gardening help for two hours and £ 105 to her husband for removing an enormous amount of branches and cuttings in his trailer after two hours pruning. MY small cottage garden is almost completely encosed and has no accessible rear entrance. I have had enough and hope to move to the town.

Happysexagenarian Sat 02-Oct-21 21:14:33

I usually carry both. But as I shop exclusively online now the £30 I have in my purse has been there nearly 18 months, the longest I've ever held on to any money! Some local shops are still refusing to accept cash. My hairdresser prefers card payments and as I don't tip her that's not a problem.

Amalegra Sat 02-Oct-21 21:08:50

Rarely use cash now. I just have a few ponds for supermarket trolleys if I mislay my coin (frequently!). It’s safer, I feel, as there are so many cunning thieves about, apparently. I can cancel my card immediately on my phone banking app. I think we do need to keep cash but see it being used less and less. Card is fine for almost everything-until that massive universal computer crash comes! And then we won’t be able to access cash machines either!

LucyW Sat 02-Oct-21 20:33:22

I use both. I put all the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins in my greyhound charity box once a week. Don't like the idea of relying solely on a card. A work colleague's debit card wouldn't work today as it was damaged and she had no card or cash.
