Carrying Cash or just Bank card

Heard on TV that people more and more are not carrying cash at all and paying for goods and services via card.
What do GNs feel about having cash or now don't? I have small coin purse which I use for the hair salon tip but apart from this, I don't tend to use cash. Do GNs feel safer out in public without cash?

It's not a question of safety, it's just I never use cash. It's just another job to go to the cash machine when I have the means to pay in my hand.

I always have some cash on me., and think that allowing ourselves to become totally reliant on card payments will come back to bite us sooner or later.

On the subject of cash I got a lot of cash from the post office at the start of the pandemic and I’ve realised many of the £20 notes are old ones which need to be replaced. Does anyone know if shops are still accepting the old ones? It’s only when I gave one to DH to pay for something that I realised I had so many.

I’ve always got at least £25 in cash, to use in my corner shop, for odds and ends, for bread which I get hotly baked from the Bakery on the Industrial Estate, for my 50+ group.

Think I've had the same two fivers in my wallet for well over a year now

I use cash to pay the cleaner and for taxis when, very infrequently, I go out.
Everything else is by card.

Have hardly used cash since Feb last year, and any time I've been out I've used my bank card, although I do carry a small amount of cash in a change purse. I've just got used to keeping a couple of bank cards in my phone case. And my window cleaner and newsagent both accept BACS transfers, so really no need to have cash these days.

Yum, hot fresh bread.

The old 20’s are still acceptable in shops. Haven’t been recalled yet.

For over a year, I've just carried my debit card, with sometimes a note in the back.

Very rarely use cash nowadays, in fact the money I have in my purse must have cobwebs ?

I like a few pounds in coins. Handy for putting in a charity box or for a tip after paying by card at the hair salon, bar or restaurant. I dare say tipping is becoming obsolete nowadays now people just pay by card.

I usually don’t carry cash I keep £20 at home for the window cleaner and any change goes in the car for the odd parking that doesn’t accept cards. Just shove my debit card in my pocket or I pay with my phone.

I seriously can’t remember the last time I used cash.
I use my pin so rarely I have to think about that.

We hardly ever have cash. When the grandchildren come we will get cash out then and that's about it.

I tip my hairdresser with my card!

Our village encourages cash, many of the elderly locally prefer cash, for whatever reason. I wouldn’t like to see the demise of cash, so use it in the local shops, pubs, cafes, at the farm shop, pharmacy and for fuel.I’ve also paid some tradesmen in cash.

I use both card and cash but I only carry small amounts. All the small change goes to prem babies via our local paper shop. I like a little cash for small purchases. It’s also less expensive for local shops as card use costs them money.

Always have cash and a card. A friend never has cash and often there has been a problem using a card and she has no fallback. Other than me grin

Boz Thu 30-Sept-21 16:25:20

My hairdresser charges £22 for a blow dry. If I wave a £20 she just takes it. Love a discount, me.

BlueBelle Thu 30-Sept-21 16:26:38

Use both, I can’t imagine buying a sandwich or a packet of crisps with a card

silverlining48 Thu 30-Sept-21 16:27:16

Bet she loves you Boz. smile

grannyrebel7 Thu 30-Sept-21 16:27:38

Love contactless, hate cash!

Severnsider Thu 30-Sept-21 16:29:25

Some car parks only take cash.
