Had an email about this this morning. They say the charge is too expensive. Surely amazon can afford this?

I thought you couldn't use Paypal on Amazon anymore?

The answer teally is to use PayPal. That way you don't give out your bank details to anyone else.

Except PayPal.

The only time somebody illegally tried to use my payment details online was via PayPal.

Oh come on Allegrias maybe this is the hidden Brexit advantage that we have been promised! Eureka

What can it possibly have to do with Brexit? Amazon and Visa are two large American businesses.

Amazon in Europe is registered in Luxembourg for tax purposes. I put a link on the first page of this thread about changes in charges due to Brexit.

But they've both said its nothing to do with Brexit.

In other news, wolverines make excellent housepets. (film reference!smile)

Let’s not forget who gave Amazon their wonderful tax deal:
Jean Claude Juncker when he was President of Luxembourg and then took the top seat at the top table in the EU.
Just saying ?

Oh dear here we go again. According to Visa and Amazon, it’s nothing to do with Brexit.

I'm pretty sure that Visa will find a way to reduce their charges to such a massive customer as Amazon. DHs small business appealed and had their Visa charges reduced. I think Amazon is playing hard ball with Visa.

Just hover over the email address, don't click REPLY. If you click it you let them know your own address is a valid one and that you are reading their emails. Best to read emails in the preview window first, if you think they might be spam.

Good point. I click reply and then Spam them.

I read recently that the CIA and the FBI use Amazon servers

Whisper it...so does Gransnet shock

Dempie55 Wed 17-Nov-21 16:09:27

I plan use my credit card
to load up my Amazon gift card with few hundred quids before January, then just keep topping it up via Tesco purchases of further gift cards.

JeanneLeFol Wed 17-Nov-21 16:04:33

As far as I’m concerned that’s it for Amazon now, they’re over the line.
I shall take my credit card and happily spend it elsewhere.
These huge companies are in fact a future menace. I read recently that the CIA and the FBI use Amazon servers, and now MI5 and MI6 are going to do the same.
Personally I think Jeff Besos, Elon Musk, Google and Facebook are the anti Christ.
Too much power in too few hands means these companies will control countries.

geeljay Wed 17-Nov-21 15:56:21

It is simply the fees that Amazon pay for card use that is casuing the cancellation. I think Martin Lewis is right, it is the first move by Amazon to negotiate a smaller fee to visa.

One can't afford to keep zooming off into space if one has to keep paying these charges on behalf of customers.

Is it another Brexit bonus?

news.sky.com/story/visa-to-hike-interchange-fees-for-uk-customers-in-post-brexit-move-12247818

Yup. This is presumably why my First Direct account cards changed from Visa to Mastercard. As I understand it, under EU rules, charges were limited to 0.3%, now that we have thrown off the shackles of the EU, we can now be charged the liberating rate of 1.5%. Hurrah!

I think the way to tell if Amazon / Ebay / Paypal emails are real is to click the 'REPLY' button.

If the email that comes up is a list of random numbers and letters, it's a fake.

ALL of the emails I've had from them have been fakes!

Haven’t got a credit card, only a debit card, and have always used it for online purchases. Maybe I should get a credit card?

Good thinking! No more unnecessary scarves and earrings!
??

Hetty58 Wed 17-Nov-21 14:45:20

I always use PayPal anyway. I expect many use a debit card, so maybe Amazon can afford to refuse credit card payments for a while?

Rosie51 Wed 17-Nov-21 14:41:09

There are plenty of alternatives.
I know I shouldn't support Amazon to the extent I do but there truly aren't plenty of alternatives that will meet the customer service I enjoy with Prime. Same day delivery in some cases, next day for virtually everything else. One fee covers as many deliveries as I wish, no minimum spend. There isn't another company that can supply the breadth of goods delivered in such a timely manner.

M0nica Wed 17-Nov-21 13:52:55

It is on the news so is not a scam.

I stopped shopping at Amazon when I discovered they didn't pay taxes and overwork their employees. Why do you think they are running the advertising campaign to tell us what wonderful employees they are - because they aren't.

There are plenty of alternatives.

Alegrias1 Wed 17-Nov-21 12:40:04

Debit cards are highly dangerous

Bit of an exaggeration, I think. confused

I think this may be a scam email if Amazon intended this change it would be all over the media and business press.

It's not a scam email. It was in the press this morning.

I corrected this post at 09.51 after checking Reuters website.
