Savings Account or Premium Bonds?

I have some money languishing in an ISA which only pays 0.05% interest, so I want to transfer it somewhere else. I can't decide whether to put it in a savings account offering 1.25% interest or dump it into Premium Bonds. Anyone here savvy with money?

Chestnut if you are savvy you could make a few £££ by eg if you can, open several accounts online. Most will tell you if you save eg £150 a month for a year you will earn 2.5% or more, Yorkshire BS. Some are offering 4.5% for a year but it is usually a smallish amount like a couple of thousand. If you could keep your eye on your dosh, ie multiple small accounts you could have fun.

I do not have the full amount of premium bonds but I win most months and this month £100. I plough it back in to buy more.

I bought premium bonds when they first came out.only a £1 and £2 then.but never won a penny.so had them about 60 years
I can't believe they have never come up.but shows how hard it is to win.worse than the lottery
I have c hanged addresses and notified them but nothing.
Couldn't afford to invest what I am seeing on here

Oh thank you. I always thought they were announced on the 2nd of every month ?‍?

tanith Thu 04-Aug-22 14:08:57

Too early ?

tanith Thu 04-Aug-22 14:07:44

Katyj some months its 3or4 days before the results are announced so if you checked to early it would say nothing.
I won 2x£25 same as last month well pleased.

I won £50 this month. I don’t put my winnings back into Premium Bonds but spend it on something specific.

Hi. Does anyone know why it should tell me I haven’t won, then three days later I get a email to say I’ve won £25 ? This has happened July and August.

it is interesting to keep a monthly record of winnings. I look at the year`s total every december and work out the interest on my pb savings. Last year it was 1.6%. I bought pbs for each grandchild, one had 5.75% last year

I had £25 this month

I have held £11 (yes, eleven) since 1959. I won £250 in 1965, my mother put £200 back into them, I had to give £20 to my grandparents and £10 each to my two siblings, leaving the huge sum of £10 for me to spend.

I wasn’t allowed the Sindy doll that I craved, instead I chose a quilted satin dressing gown with buttons, to replace my hand-me-down scratchy wool one, and a white fluffy bedside rug to cover the stained green carpet.

I cashed in the £200 block when I was 20 and had left home, I was signed off sick for several months after major surgery and needed it to pay my rent.

Now newly retired and perhaps I’ll finally top them up when my work pension comes through.

I've just googled, and it seems that yes, each bond has an equal chance of winning, and the reason that newer ones win more often is because there are proportionately more of them. The overwhelming majority of bonds have been bought in the last 20 years - partly because the maximum holding amount has risen, and partly because people cash the older ones in more often.

The article here is the least annoying I can find quickly - they all seem to have hundreds of ads breaking up the text, but all say the same, which makes sense to me.

Three lots of £25 for me and two lots for DH today.

We were winning every month since buying quite a lot 18 months ago in one block but then one of us started to miss a win. A few months ago I sold about half of them and then reinvested in smaller amounts. Since then, with now 5 blocks of numbers now, we've both won.

I have heard a lot of people say this, and things like it about some numbers being more likely to win than others, whether it is new v old, or small blocks v large ones or whatever.

Can this be true? My understanding is that it is an entirely random draw, and that each bond has as much chance of winning as any other - is this not the case?

£50 for me this month smile

Thank you ,Charleygirl and Doodledog.
Actually, to begin with at least, we are going to celebrate with any winnings. It’s been a very hard few years, so taking any winnings as a gift, and enjoying the anticipation each month!

Serendipity22 Tue 02-Aug-22 22:00:35

Are the premium bonds through the post office ??

Jaxjacky Tue 02-Aug-22 20:38:51

I won nothing this month, but in the last 10 months have won £25 each month bar 2. Just invested to a little short of the maximum a few weeks ago, those numbers will be in the mix for September’s draw.

joannapiano Tue 02-Aug-22 20:17:07

£50 for me, too, today. Nothing for DH.

Doodledog Tue 02-Aug-22 19:27:34

Well done, Ali!

Charleygirl5 Tue 02-Aug-22 19:14:35

Ali are you like me, ploughing your winnings back into your premium bonds? You did very well and long may it continue.

Ali23 Tue 02-Aug-22 16:42:17

I put some of my inheritance into premium bonds, because of this thread, and have just won £75 in the first draw!
Thank you ladies! Thank you mum!
