Factually correct, please!

May I make a plea for information on this particular Forum to be factually correct?
Whenever possible, please could we provide a link to a reliable source of information?

Of course, we are all free to post personal experiences, but it worries me when posters make statements which are not factually correct. They could mislead others and have unwanted consequences.
This particular forum is so important to those who have a genuine enquiry.
Sorry if this comes across as bossy. I’m sure it does, but for a good reason.

I’m sure we are aware that opinions and anecdotal experience is not necessarily the same as fact
As the late Queen said, “Recollections may vary” and I think it is down to us to fact- check what we read on social media just as in the press.
There may be many contributors on GN with professional experience but even they will usually recommend you seek guidance from the appropriate source.
That said, I am still grateful to Galen for her invaluable advice many years ago when we were involved in an ESA appeal tribunal.

People who make statements on here which are not factually correct or are of the I read somewhere variety are invariably challenged to show their sources. Often though things are not facts but opinions. Other times if you ask for straightforward factual advice such as where can I buy Size 9 floral trainers you will receive a factual answer.

Cabbie21 I am sure we all use our common sense when it comes to evaluating any given facts.
Is there a particular thread or post you are concerned about?

I am not out to criticise any individuals.

I am referring to this Legal pensions and money forum, which many value as a reliable source of information. Information needs to be accurate.
Yes, one would hope people will check it out. Hence the useful links.

Of course, experiences and opinions will vary, that is absolutely as it should be. But I don’t think it is always obvious when someone is giving an opinion or is stating something as a fact.

That seems a reasonable request to me, Cabbie21.

Hmm not sure…. This is a forum for opinions, none of us are experts.

Best go to Gov. U.K. or Age concern for facts.

Cabbie21 Mon 12-Dec-22 12:01:56

Thank you, icanhandthemback.

Exactly, Poppyred, hence the request for links.

Though to be fair, some of us do have relevant training and experience in some areas.

I find it odd when people ask for medical and legal advice on here and then trust someone that says they are a doctor or lawyer, they may well be but they maybe are not or their advice is out of date.

Someone on another thread has asked whether or not it would be safe to eat a fish pie that was cooked and then left in a cooling oven overnight.
Most posters say yes it’s fine, as a cook and someone that has had campylobacter I say a big fat no.
Ultimately it’s up to you to decide.

A perfect example
You beat me to it!

Me also and my knowledge is professional albeit many years ago but food poisoning is unlikely to change.

As soon as food has cooled it should be covered and refrigerated.

I can live with incorrect information from posters. None of us are perfect, and it is relatively easy to check stuff.

What I can’t and won’t live with is the lies and nonsense put out by the government.

The latest from Sunak, concerning how much it will cost each individual if he “gives into”the nurses pay.

BBC checked the £1000 statement, and it is totally untrue.

Just as if Sunak gives into the nurses, it helps Putin. Perhaps he ought to tell his wife who was £11 million the richer from her company sat in Putin’s Russia, last year.

😡😡😡

Me too but unfortunately people with less ability to discern might take things on here at face value. Whilst you can't be responsible for everyone, you can minimise that chance.

I think although its easy important that advice on medical and legal matters is correct, I think quite a few of us come in not just for information, but support and a chance to sort of think aloud and talk it over. So even if info isn't totally correct -and its up to the poster on the O/P to check everything - there is a value in asking for peoples POV.

On politics, well, that's a different area altogether - but this issue was posted on "Legal, pensions and money" not politics.

Correction - "very important"
