... have an account with Private Banking at Coutts.

What are the conditions to have an account with them?
I imagine you have to be pretty rich. We certainly would have never fitted their client profile.

Er, millions, but the computer threw up rather a good one..

😂😂😂
Billions. Please.

My Great Uncle had a Coutts bank account. I remember being given a cheque for my birthday. Their cheques were bigger and squarer than normal.

I didn't realise it meant he was a wealthy so and so.

Oh dear, I went and bought minions for you....

Callistemon21 Sun 30-Jul-23 22:47:01

I don't mind a minion or two.
At least, DGS and I enjoyed their film 😁

How much are they worth?

Wyllow3 Mon 31-Jul-23 00:04:29

(A deal:
All three minions on loan and film rights for the next film - should give an 80% return)

I’d never heard of them until the Nigel Farage business, they must be just European. We’re with the CBA, Commonwealth bank. I am tempted by the Bendigo Bank , my club uses them and they seem very community minded.

I assumed the OP was simply being ironic in a lighthearted way when they opened this thread. High street banks are good enough for me.

Coutts is not by any means the only company which offers private banking in the UK to high net worth individuals.

I remember hearing about a relative who lost all his money in the 1929 banking crash. It left me with the feeling that life can be very uncertain and best not to put all your money in a bank. So anyone with a Coutts account seems very trusting to me. In any event isn’t only the first £85k safeguarded by the government?

I love that he was giving you guineas Joseann!

In my childhood things priced in guineas seemed to be luxury items such as "upmarket" clothing and gifts.

Something rather romantic about it!

I first heard of Coutts (founded 1692) in a Georgette Heyer novel.

I am more likely to tool my high-perch phaeton down St. James's than to have an account with them. 🙂

Coutts doesn't extend to Europe nanna8. It is purely and simply UK. They also have Crown Dependencies in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. The reason my father had an account in Jersey was that, although British, he resided abroad and benefited from having his finances managed offshore.

I'm sorry, are there other ways of reading this question?.

Yes, the full question you asked appears as ‘what is the proportion of GN members who have an account with Private Banking at Coutts.

Sorry Foxy, that should have read ‘the full question asked’ - I was agreeing with you, sorry.

I would say that a very small proportion of GN members have an account with Coutts.

I’m equally sure that none of them would say.

Baroness Coutts in the mid 19C was so impressed with my OH's grandfather's art work, that she gave him a grant to study art in London. He became quite famous, thanks to her sponsorship.

Nigel Farage does not deny he has too little money at exclusive bank Coutts to keep account.

Last week the Brexit campaigner said he had been told by his bank they no longer wanted him as a customer. He has now confirmed the bank in question is Coutts - but does not deny he fell below the wealth cap.

So, a special bank, with very specific criteria for customers- most of us won't fit them- that's fine. He does no longer, and loses his account and is offered an 'ordinary' one, like the vast majority +++ have - fair enough.

Catch up Fleurpepper 🤣

GrannyGravy13 Tue 01-Aug-23 14:12:44

According to the BBC Coutts have offered to reinstate both Mr.Garage’s business and personal accounts.

Namsnanny Tue 01-Aug-23 14:21:15

Yes, GG13, NF has set up a meeting with Coutts head honcho's to discuss this, and other difficulties.

HappyLife Tue 01-Aug-23 14:21:36

Approx 20 years ago my DH sold something to someone who lived in a little terraced house on the wrong side of town. The lady wrote him a Coutts cheque for about £300. We just couldn't get our heads around it. We didn't know whether to cash it or frame it!

Foxygloves Tue 01-Aug-23 14:42:37

As I have said before I have no sympathy on any front with Nigel Farage but Coutts chose the wrong victim.
The fact that they have now presented him with a “cause” and a platform for his toxic philosophies is totally regrettable.
I would have preferred to see him sink without trace.

Joseann Tue 01-Aug-23 14:47:40

I agree Foxygloves. I do think Farage is making a meal of it and will use it to his advantage. (He does have a point, but most Coutts' members are usually more discreet. 😉)

VioletSky Tue 01-Aug-23 14:54:16

I have 17 accounts with them

Joseann Tue 01-Aug-23 15:15:02

Really? I thought there was a limit to the number of accounts Coutts allows you to have in any one currency?
