... have an account with Private Banking at Coutts.

What are the conditions to have an account with them?
I imagine you have to be pretty rich. We certainly would have never fitted their client profile.

I have read before, I think on more than 1 occasion, that for every poster that you see on a social media site, there are 9 reading.
So in reality, any replies you get would only cover 10% anyway.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 30-Jul-23 16:42:47

If any poster was to admit to having a Coutts account they would probably be accused of being boastful regarding their finances…

Fleurpepper Sun 30-Jul-23 16:43:57

Wow B9e? They didn't at the West Mid, for sure.

Thanks Willow 3, for reading the question in the OP as intended. Tongue and cheek.

I prefer to keep my trunks of gold bullion under my bed.

I prefer to sit on mine like a dragon dragon
Coutts aren’t going to get their hands on so much as a gold doubloon.

I can claim to have had a Coutts account! It was in the late 60's and they had a branch inside the Middlesex Hospital for the doctors and nurses to use. Obviously it was closed down when I left nursing. But I still have the beautiful maroon leather cheque book cover embossed in gold with the three crowns!

You win the award for Poshest Poster, B9exchange 🥇
(That's solid gold from my stash, btw 🙂)

Oh so that's OK is it? Having a dig or criticising people with money? I agree with GrannyGravy13. If any poster was to admit to having a Coutts account they would probably be accused of being boastful regarding their finances.
At the risk of being unpopular on this issue on GN, I have always said that people with money are still people, many of them nice people, who experience life's problems and tragedies like anyone else.

Oreo Sun 30-Jul-23 17:00:43

That shouldn’t be an unpopular viewpoint Joseann it’s just a straightforward statement of truth.

Thank you Callistemon21, sadly the cut glass accent has faded over the years! [laugh]

Tongue IN cheek? OP gringrinwink
Certainly some would concur with the "cheek" of the question.

Agreed, of course, And I know quite a few- so no dig from me.

But the Coutts rules are clear

'*To open an account all UK clients and expats are required to save £3m+ or borrow (such as through a mortgage) or invest more than £1m with Coutts. *

if someone, be he Farage or Miller, you or me, no longer fulfil those criteria, their accounts are closed- and in the case of Farage, an other account offered with a sister bank, so he can go about his 'business'.

That was my feeling. It’s bad enough being a Conservative voter on here …

Fleurpepper Sun 30-Jul-23 17:56:06

Nigel Farage does not deny he has too little money at exclusive bank Coutts to keep account.

Last week the Brexit campaigner said he had been told by his bank they no longer wanted him as a customer. He has now confirmed the bank in question is Coutts - but does not deny he fell below the wealth cap.

So, a special bank, with very specific criteria for customers- most of us won't fit them- that's fine. He does no longer, and loses his account and is offered an 'ordinary' one, like the vast majority +++ have - fair enough.

Wyllow3 Sun 30-Jul-23 18:25:46

That made me smile a bit GSM cos sometimes I feel the opposite. grin

Maybe its a bit like the BBC - lefties think its rather right, right think its rather left...

I'm sort of low level intrigued at what made them decide to do it to Farage.

I bet there are titled people with less than 3 million? (I'm imagining scenes behind the scenes behind the scenes cloak and dagger stuff as it makes no sense to court this kind of publicity as of course

- I dont think anyone disagrees - you cant close an account on political terms unless you have someone who breaks the law as in hate crime/terrorism that sort of thing).

Maggiemaybe Sun 30-Jul-23 18:43:28

I once considered applying for a job at Coutts, goodness knows why (I also considered applying for the WRENS, till I found out I wouldn't actually be sailing the world).

The glossy brochure and application form I was sent were very posh. Possibly gold embossed, who knows? They sort of exuded the impression that me and my working class Geordie vowels wouldn't have been a very good fit....

eazybee Sun 30-Jul-23 19:02:28

I think the mysterious 'they 'who initiated this investigation into Nigel Farage's affairs thought he was a target that would impress ESG and its cohorts.
They were so arrogant they ignored a warning that NF would resist this and go public, ignored the fact that he was financially viable, and were unaware that there was a process to allow him to see and publish all the relevant documents. This was compounded by Alison Rose, who thought she was seated next to Simon Jack for the pleasure of her company and has no understanding of 'confidentiality.'
The venal Howard Davies is clinging on to his role as Chairman, praising AR so she can trouser £2 .48 million salary whilst blaming political interference for their downfall. This when the State owns 38.6 of NatWest from bailing it out 15 years ago.
I don't find it amusing, I find it frightening.

Coutts closed my account, the reason they gave was because I'm on Gransnet.
It's too political, apparently.

Made me laugh🤣

Thanks Callistemon, made me laugh. Plus, you made it easier for me to admit to being stinking rich but too political for Coutts.

Yes, I wanted to join the WRENS too! But got offered a job which was too good to resist.

A friend I've met since then was a WREN officer and told me she was put in charge of organising the PE and sports, despite not being at all sporty 😁 🏃‍♀️

But that's not the reason they closed his account, according to Rose.
