Passports not in the drawer I always keep them in. Turning the place upside down.

Thought I would have a quick look to see the date of expiry on them/. We use them for id as we haven’t been abroad for quite awhile. Last time was about December /January time when renewing a bond at the building society. Now I am really careful about passports and would have put them back in drawer in the same place. Also I would have been placed them back in my handbag as soon as they were seen. Have had everything out, drawers, handbags looked everywhere. I found an envelope with a receipt for mine which shows the number and date of issue. However, my dh’s envelope probably contains the two missing passports! I looked in the phone bookas I write most things down and there were old passport numbers but not the new ones. This has never happened before. Will I be able to cancel dh’s passport without the number. I remember they were issued from two different offices so I hope the issue date will be the same as on my receipt. Just asking as my head is aching and I know I am supposed to report list passports as soon as possible.

Have they dropped down the back of the drawers like mine did recently🫣had the place turned over looking for hours kept in bedside drawers.

My son once washed his passport, what it was doing in his jeans pocket I will never know.
He was coming home for Christmas so had to get a temporary one from the embassy.
I have asked all my 3 to check the dates on their passports so they don’t get caught out.

Just a thought, have you looked in your suitcases?

Lucyd Mon 15-Apr-24 19:06:47

I feel for you. I am (and always have been) very scatty and have a dreadful habit of putting down what I am holding and going off to do something else. Both my parents were very organised it isn't something I have got from them. Las5 week alone I lost my purse (fortunately a very kind person handed it in to the local tourist info centre, it was then listed on the lost and found page which a colleague saw) and the details of my energy supplier switch which I had carefully copied out neatly ( had to spend well over an hour sorting that out on the telephone). Don't rush to cancel the passports as they will probably turn up in the strangest of places!

Enjoy your G&T, and good luck when searching tomorrow. I have found at times, when mislaying something, I suddenly remember when drifting off to sleep. 🤞

Yes, I'm sure St Anthony told me where to look when I was just drifting off to sleep 😇
It was somewhere I'd searched before more than once.

Lovetopaint037 Mon 15-Apr-24 19:59:51

Definitely saying that prayer to St Anthony.
I had a friend who always depended on him.
Thank you.

I keep coming back to read in the hope that you had found them.

They are probably with my watch and gold bracelet! sad

loopyloo Mon 15-Apr-24 20:29:46

Yup check the suitcases. And look with a torch. That's how I spotted my tablet this afternoon.

Take a pin and a cushion. Stab the cushion three times, saying " I pin the devil" everytime you stab.
Then just forget about searching ( not easy, I know ) and where the passports are will come to you.

crazyH Mon 15-Apr-24 22:30:15

Not found yet? That’s strange…

Lovetopaint037 Tue 16-Apr-24 11:08:42

Was still searching until late last night. The last time I would have taken them out might have been December/January for ID but not sure if I actually had to show them. The last time I would have definitely had them would have been just after a Bank holiday last April/May (23). That was at a building society. However, I would have thought they would have notified me if they had been left there which was unlikely. I will ring them today but it is so long ago. I am usually so organised and have all previous passports recorded and I still have them. However, this is the first time I failed to do this with the newer ones. Probably because we had no plans to go abroad. As said before I have the empty envelope and passport number for mine but my passport must be with my dh’s. I feel I have just about exhausted my options and am thinking of cancelling them just to ensure no one is misusing them somewhere. If the procedure is straight forward then dh is saying to save me getting myself into a state just cancel and order a duplicate. It’s certainly an expense we could do without and they might well turn up but beginning to think peace of mind is worth it. So kind helpers I will try the building society by ringing them, have another quick look where I have looked before and then probably cancel later today or tomorrow.

Ah thank you for the update.
I know we are all rooting for you! It must be SOMEWHERE in your house or car. I’d not give up just yet ….
I lost a gold earring a few months ago. I was so upset.
I found it at the end of the week.

Lovetopaint037 Tue 16-Apr-24 11:22:51

Urmstongran . Thank you. We no longer have a car and went by bus to the building society. However, now you have encouraged me again. I will at least spend today retracing everything.

I mislaid mine last year. I hadn’t travelled for a couple of years and couldn’t understand why it wasn’t in the travel wallet where I normally store it.

After 2 days of frantic searching I found it in an envelope with 2 utility bills. I vaguely remembered that I’d used it months ago for ID purposes along with the bills. It was sandwiched between the 2 bills.

I hope they turn up today for you. It’s an expensive loss and needless to say you’ll find them before the replacements are delivered. Fingers crossed you’ll be back with good news later 🤞

crazyH Tue 16-Apr-24 11:27:39

Oh - just apply for a new one - you will make yourself ill searching for it - if you are not travelling in the near future, you can just cross your fingers and hope it will turn up. If you are intending to travel soon, £100 is a small price to pay and cheaper if you apply on-line. Good luck anyway

I have a bad habit of stuffing items in pockets of coats and jackets and having a selection I frequently get a good surprise. Could that have happened?

If they do not turn up today I would cancel and start again. It is not worthwhile stressing yourself to this level.

Calendargirl Tue 16-Apr-24 12:48:42

This probably sounds silly.

Have you got your old passports handy?

It’s just you said in your OP that you wanted to check the expiry date.

I wondered if for some reason you never replaced them, but meant to, which is why you can’t find them, (if that makes sense).

Realise this sounds unlikely, but trying to think of alternatives.

Lovetopaint037 Tue 16-Apr-24 13:08:14

Thank you Calendar girl. Definitely renewed and have the receipt in my empty envelope with passport number. Also all the passports are clipped.

MissAdventure Tue 16-Apr-24 13:20:04

Try some self hypnosis.

Put on some gentle, relaxing music, then picture the day they went missing - what you did, where you went, how you felt.

Then turn it all off, get online, and order replacements. smile

Calendargirl Tue 16-Apr-24 15:29:16

I think you took them to the building society in Dec/Jan for I/D purposes, both passports in DH’s envelope.

Then when you came home, instead of putting them in the usual drawer, for some reason you popped them elsewhere. Maybe in a rush to unpack other shopping or similar? DH didn’t put them away himself somewhere, and has forgotten?

I realise you must have gone through all this, both physically searching and mentally searching as well, but I really think they will be somewhere safe, but in the wrong place.

If it was December/January, they have not been put away with any Christmas stuff? Grasping at straws, I know.

I so hope they come to light.

🤞

J52 Tue 16-Apr-24 15:46:55

Calendergirl might be on to something. I lost DHs spare car keys. I’d put them in the, seldom used, kitchen utensils drawer instead of the dresser drawer, which I’d thoroughly searched along with every handbag and coat pocket.

Lovetopaint037 Tue 16-Apr-24 16:27:42

You are such lovely people but I am going to let you down. I felt so tired and the building society said they would have let me know. I ran out of places to look. The thing is that we are in our eighties and because of this I am meticulous where things are put as I don’t rely on my memory!!!Dh never touches them as he knows what I am like. I am programmed to put them in that drawer no matter what is going on 😂. Of course I didn’t or else it would be there. So knowing it will turn up eventually I still couldn’t stand the stress 😱In shame I confess I did the silly deed and they are both cancelled. So just have to brace myself for the taking photographs and paying out the money. When I find them I will let you know and you can say we told you so. The bonus is that I feel relieved and I can get on with my painting of a lovely red Labrador puppy which the family has acquired. I’m out of practise as my health hasn’t been A1 this last year but this has recently improved and I was so enjoying dabbling again even if it isn’t up to scratch. Can’t tell you how much I have appreciated your posts. You are so lovely.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-Apr-24 17:01:39

Sometimes you just have to draw a line under it and accept defeat. Well done. You will feel so much better without this stress. They may well turn up but it doesn’t matter now. Enjoy your painting and the lovely puppy. Glad your health has improved.

BlueBelle Tue 16-Apr-24 17:17:35

Ahh it’s a shame but you have to do what’s right for you and no one else can know that
If you feel relief then you ve done the right thing I don’t think anyone will say told you so we ll just say oh buxxer

loopyloo Tue 16-Apr-24 17:22:54

Absolutely the right decision.
Have a good time painting.
