Hi My mum sold her accountancy practice 4 years ago based upon figures prepared by her colleague as she had the first stages of dementia. The person she sold the company to has disputed the figures and she has now been asked to appear in court as a defendant. her Alzheimer's is now advanced and she cannot understand anything regarding the sale. She lives on benefits and cannot afford a solicitor. Can anyone recommend a way forward for some free legal advice. Please.

I think simply submitting to the court a doctor's certificate that says she is unfit to plead, should start a process that will help you.

Otherwise talk to your local Citizen's Advice or Neighbourhood Law Centre, if there is one. You may also find that Age UK could help.

Your mother may be entitled to Legal Aid, which , is free state-paid legal services. Some solicitors offer 30 minutes of free advice. Citizen's Advice or Age UK may know which solicitors local to you offer this service.

Some solicitors participate in 'pro-bono' schemes that is schemes that give free legal advice to those who cannot pay. You can find out more about such schemes and how to access them at /www.lawsociety.org.uk/public/for-public-visitors/using-a-solicitor/getting-free-legal-advice

Whatever the process she cannot appear in court and give evidence if she is not mentally competent - and she clearly is not.
Good luck.
