Can't remember if I did this site before or not. Anyway, I'm a true Devonshire Dumpling. Born in Plymouth, gradually moved eastwards...
to Torquay for many years. Then Newton Abbot.
Now on the edge of Dartmoor not far from Bovey Tracey.
Devon is lovely. smile

Currently living in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. Arrived here via Barcelona, The Wirral, Manchester & Teesside. Only been here 15 years so am not quite a local yet. Looking forward to local meet-ups next week.

Hello, I'm a Scot, East Renfrewshire

absent Sat 21-Sept-13 05:22:31

Agus The Scottish and the North-east English grannies are great ones for get togethers which are huge fun and very noisy. Do join them when they are organising one – you'll have a smashing time. Sadly, I can no longer come along as I have emigrated and live the other side of the world.

Agus Sat 21-Sept-13 08:33:39

Hi absent kind of you to let me know about the get togethers. I noticed these before joining GN and your leaving party.

Your life in NZ sounds wonderful although very busy with Granny duties. I am in a similar position with my 2 GDs and although at times exhausting, I wouldn't change a minute of it.

We are currently entertaining relatives from NZ who have come over for a family wedding which is sure to be fun and noisy. DH and I both have family in your part of the world

Great memories of your send off/meet-up in Darlington Absent, wonder if you are planning starting NZ meet-ups?

jennycockerspaniel Sat 21-Sept-13 19:58:08

I live in GuisboroughMy grandson lives in Northallerton and often visit but cannot make next Sat as its out of town ,also am having my younger grandchildren to stay. Sorry;

YaYaJen Sun 22-Sept-13 07:27:49

Hi Jennycockerspaniel,
Maybe we could pencil in a coffee meet up in between lunch meet-ups? Or a Kidzplay play date if your GC are similar ages, we often take the boys when we are looking after them..another option would be to meet with the Middlesbrough gransnetters, I keep saying I will go but something always seems to come up and make it impossible.

Have fun with the grandchildren.

Another northerner here. I'm in Barnard Castle, near Darlington and not far from Northallerton.

YaYaJen Sun 29-Sept-13 18:07:37

Hi Broomsticks, know Barnard Castle quite well, used to be part of my insurance area.

Hope to arrange another lunch in November with perhaps a coffee meet-up late October, if you keep an eye on the N Yorks meet-up forum I will post dates and venue there. Meantime please free to start new topics or add details of your favourite places.

See you soon.

Sounds good smile

There's a place for a meet-up, Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle. Lovely restaurant.

YaYaJen Mon 30-Sept-13 09:53:20

Hi JenDurham
Lovely to hear from you, Bowes Museum is beautiful however many Gransnetters prefer to use public transport than drive - problematic in areas of N Yorkshire with so many small towns and villages plus of course the weather in winter...what does everyone think about Harrogate or Ripon?

Jendurham Mon 30-Sept-13 12:21:52

Yes, I know, I have to drive over the dales to get to Barnard Castle. I just suggested that because Broomsticks lives in Barnard Castle.
Have you been up in the library in the Bowes Museum? You get fantastic views from there.
I am trying to find the link between my Milner family and John Bowes mother, Mary Milner. There must be a link somewhere because my great great grandfather had a brother called Bowes Milner, born in the same year as John Bowes. The story is that their father was Mary Milner's brother.

Stansgran Mon 30-Sept-13 14:38:31

Went to Bowes museum on Saturday with our Australian visitors. A beautiful autumn day but somehow the drive seems longer these days.

Jendurham Mon 30-Sept-13 14:47:01

Has the Laura Ashley exhibition started yet?

YaYaJen Mon 30-Sept-13 16:32:04

I think so as it was on the local news...will check

broomsticks Mon 30-Sept-13 17:52:38

I live on the same road as the Bowes Museum. Great place for a meet up grin

tiggypiro Mon 30-Sept-13 18:47:34

My childhood home was directly opposite Bowes Museum on the Yorkshire side and I was born in Barney. The view from our kitchen was of the Museum and Barney school. We played tennis in the grounds - are the courts still there ? Saturday night ballroom dancing lessons in the wooden hut (long gone) of the YMCA in Newgate, live groups playing for dances in the Parish Hall and going home with ears ringing. I blame those dances for my tinnitus now!
I now live in Northallerton but completely missed anything about the meet-up last Saturday. My fault I'm sure. Hope to see you next time !

broomsticks Mon 30-Sept-13 22:00:52

Which house Tiggypiro? It's split in two now. The tennis courts at the front of the school are gone. There are three houses there now. In fact I lived in one for a bit. There are courts round the back still I think.

When the government was talking about reducing the number of parliamentary seats, our seat would have been combined with Barnard Castle if they had had their way. It would have been the largest in the country and the most impossible to travel round for 6 months.
Our MP said she would not be able to see half her constituents for at least half the year.
It just shows that they have no idea about geography, not realising that the roads/dales are horizontal, not vertical. They wanted to link up Haltwhistle, Consett and Barnard Castle.

tiggypiro Tue 01-Oct-13 08:55:42

Sorry Broomsticks - I didn't make myself very clear did I !
We played tennis in the grounds of the Museum. Were you thinking of Spring Lodge across the road from the Museum ? Our Girl Guide troop (?) kept our old army bell tents in a shed there and we practised putting them up in the field. They were huge and so damned heavy !
This is bringing back so many memories and the vast majority are so good !

Re Gransnet NYorks - with so many other area names within the county (like Hambleton, Craven etc) it can get confusing - so Yorkshire & N East Gransnetters where are you all?

Just put your area and/or town on the local forum topic & a little bit about it and lets get Local rocking!

I am in Northallerton (North Yorkshire - Hambleton) a nice enough town but no outstanding attributes wink

local.gransnet.com/forums/local_north_yorkshire/1201215-Where-are-you-N-Yorks-N-East-Dales

Thanks in advance

broomsticks Tue 01-Oct-13 17:27:05

Tiggypiro, yes, I got the wrong houses. I was thinking of the ones further down opposite the school. I do know someone who lives just opposite the Bowes Museum. There are two houses there and then Spring Lodge further down where the Colonel used to live.

YaYaJen Mon 21-Oct-13 16:32:26

Anyone for coffee next week Northallerton
