Nanalaine. There are a few of us in the area - SW Fife and Kinross and we meet up occasionally with Edinburgh members. Keep an eye open for meet up arrangements!

Nanalaine Thu 17-Apr-14 10:44:43

Good to know - new to this forum business and finding it a wee bit difficult to navigate but getting there!

Elegran Thu 17-Apr-14 10:59:22

There is also a Local site in Northeast Fife, where Granwend lists local attractions, businesses and events and organises get-togethers - or she would if enough people were interested.

Ariadne Thu 17-Apr-14 11:14:16

I have noticed, though, Elegran that very few local editors (with some special exceptions!) ever post on the forums, and therefore miss opportunities to promote their sites. I know that there is more to GN than the forums, but to me they are the heart of GN.

Elegran Thu 17-Apr-14 11:33:22

I have noticed this too. I think there is so much emphasis put on the "what's on" pages and the listings of local businesses and facilities, and on the liaison with the local area, that the editors don't have time or energy left for chatting on the general forums.

They do try very hard to post stuff on the local forums but it is uphill work getting you lot to transfer your attention from the lively discussions going on here to the empty new pages of the new forums. It takes more than posts by the editors to make a local community. One of the reasons why I left the local one and now just concentrate on the general one.

I read 'life'too. not in Fife though.

Nanalaine The bug grin is a bunny grin! Are you tbuconfused ? The bunnies are temporary, make the most of them. They will vanish after Easter (down rabbit-holes, consulting watches and muttering "I'm late!")

My great GF came from Dundee! Does that count?
(David Stratton Duncan if anyone is interested!!!!)

Elegran Fri 18-Apr-14 09:57:19

Everyone who is anyone either came from Fife, had ancestors there, or has now moved there. Fife is the centre of the universe.

Don't let Edinburgers or Weegies tell you any different.

Half of Edinburgh are really emigre Fifers.

Hello Nanalaine, it's nice to have you here on Gransnet. smile I'm also in Fife, though further down near Kirkcaldy, and meet up regularly in Edinburgh, or wherever, with quite a few of the local gransnetters.

Marelli Fri 18-Apr-14 10:03:50

Maybe you're right, Elegran wink - I went to Fife/left Fife/went back.....like it here! smile

annodomini Fri 18-Apr-14 10:27:34

Too right, Elegran. My Dad came from Fife and my childhood holidays were spent there as well as four student years!

Starling Sun 24-Aug-14 23:22:51

I know this thread is from April and I am not in Fife at all but I am interested in the local / general exchange between Ariadne and Elegran above so just wanted to comment on that - I have offered to be a local editor and was just thinking that maybe local editors feel less anonymous on the general forum and less able to share personal things - because they may be meeting up with people locally - like the difference between confiding in a stranger in an airport or chatting with someone in a local café. Also maybe less prone to expressing strong opinions online as they want to be more inclusive of everyone's views locally. Does this make sense?

Anyone in NE Scotland....Aberdeenshire??

Pittcity Mon 08-Sept-14 18:28:13

I am a local editor in Colchester, North Essex and join in forum threads when I have something to say. I try to promote GN local as a whole on the national forum when it is appropriate and like to speak as myself not as an editor.

I do think that there could be more local chats on the local forums though...

Elegran Mon 08-Sept-14 18:57:28

The local editors are allowed to have two memberships for just that reason, Starling. When I was a local editor I started a second username, but I kept mixing them up and posting on the wrong one, so I killed off the second. Everyone knew me as Elegran already and I had made no secret of the fact that I would be editing a local page, so it wasn't worth the effort.

I don't post anything too personal - but I would not have done anyway. I know how easy it is for anyone who really wants to know who and where you are to follow clues and find out.

Wheniwasyourage Mon 08-Sept-14 19:02:31

Not Aberdeenshire, Katek but not far off - Moray.

Starling Mon 08-Sept-14 23:02:47

I didn't know about that Elegran. But then people will think they are not posting on the general forums if they have a different name!

Elegran Tue 09-Sept-14 08:00:23

True! You can't win - either you post on the general forums under a different name, and get complaints that you are never appear, or you post as yourself and everyone knows each time you change your socks. My view was that you can hardly claim to be a rallying point for your local gransnetters if you are never visible.

Pittcity Tue 09-Sept-14 08:32:53

Why is there not a LIKE button on GN?

Have to give Starling and Elegran flowers instead.

Elegran Tue 09-Sept-14 09:26:37

What I find interesting is that the Scottish contingent, and associated north-easterners, still meet up and enjoy each others' company even without an active local site (it is still there, with listings of local businesses, but has not bee updated since December. The Edinburgh local forums are exceedingly quiet)

Is it because they are naturally more social than Gners in some areas? Because they first met up well before the local sites were started?

MiceElf Tue 09-Sept-14 09:44:59

Looking at a few profiles and this thread I see a lot of Fifers.

I wonder if any of you remember a wonderful woman named Karen McKechnie? She lived in St Andrews for many years and was my history teacher, and an excellent one. We corresponded for years although never met up again as we lived so far away. She died in 2007 when she was 86. Her husband taught classics.

Marelli Tue 09-Sept-14 12:17:07

Didn't know this lady, MiceElf. Did you go to school in St Andrews?

MiceElf Tue 09-Sept-14 13:26:55

No. Nottingham. She and her husband ventured south for a few years before returning home. She said they came with trepidation, but met with nothing but kindness which was lovely to hear.

Marelli Tue 09-Sept-14 14:24:43

I'm a Nottingham girl, MiceElf! We're a warm-hearted and welcoming bunch. smile
