Apologies for all those repetitions. It's happened a couple of times today and seems to happen only when I press control/return to enter the post. I will try to remember not to use that in future. Meanwhile, could HQ please delete all but one of these posts?

We were in Leven at the mouth of the river Leven-family in all the little towns around there.Kirkaldy was for Saturday shopping and high tea at the Green Cockatoo. Wonder if it's still there?

I often take my elderly sister-in-law to Leven to do her shopping, amarmai. She lives at East Wemyss, and Leven still has quite a few little independent shops. Remember Cummings? DH and I sometimes go there to walk the beach or go a bit further along to Lower Largo and walk there.
The Green Cockatoo is no longer in Kirkcaldy, though. What a great place that was! After being empty for a number of years it's now a restaurant called Cafe Continental. The ABC cinema (across the road - do you remember?) which was so busy in its day, now lies almost derelict. Kirkcaldy has so many empty shops now. Going to Kirkcaldy to do 'Saturday shopping' was quite an event, wasn't it! There were quite a few dress shops there in the 50's and 60's. My sister-in-law (now 87) worked in Graftons!
Anno, the sun was shining on St Andrews West Sands on Saturday! DH and I were there for lunch and a wander about. Janetta's ice-cream.....delicious! Too cold for it on Saturday, though! smile

Marelli, I hear they're closing Tesco in Kirkcaldy according to FIL. He stays in Markinch as does my SIL. We stayed in Glenrothes for some time before moving north so know the area well. Spent many a happy day with the children round the East Neuk in the summer. In fact DH will be in Markinch on Friday for interment of his mother's ashes

Marelli all these names are reviving my youth! Yes i do remember Cummings- it was next to the Woolworths, where i could roam freely. We went to the Troxy or the Regent on Saturdays - Annie Get Your Gun, South Pacific- that kind of movie ! Katek you will also know Windygates and Kennoway.

Oh yes....and Thornton, Milton of Balgonie, Coaltown of Balgonie!

Marelli Tue 10-Feb-15 14:43:41

Katek, I live in Thornton and I have friends in Markinch, Milton, and Coaltown of Balgonie, as well as Glenrothes (where we lived before moving here). Tesco is closing in Kirkcaldy which will make it so difficult for older people who did their shopping there. In fact, I think there's a regular 'community bus' that takes less able people there to do a weekly shop. There are now no food shops in the town centres of Kirkcaldy or Glenrothes (no, there's a small independent one in Glenrothes, which sells a selection of veg and fish), apart from bakers outlets such as Greggs etc.

I am here is Scotland too in the beautiful Loch Lomond National Park. Has been beautiful weather but today it's dull and looks like rain! Most of the snow is off some of the not so high mountains but the high ones are still lovely and white. The birds have started to sing in the mornings so Springtime will soon be here.

It's a small world Marelli! We stayed in the Newcastle precinct - broke my heart to leave, but have driven through on a couple of occasions and could not go back now after living in a village for 33 years. We used to go to the folk club in The Elbow Room/Royal Oak in the 70's as well. Is the Links Market still running?

rascal Tue 10-Feb-15 16:43:51

My Mother came from Herd Crescent Leven Fife. I remember visiting my Gran there. My Cousins lived in Glenrothes.

Marelli Tue 10-Feb-15 18:26:07

We also used to go to the Elbow Room folk club, Katek. We were lucky enough to see Hamish Imlach there, once! We lived in Stenton, and like you couldn't go back after living in a village for as many years as we have now. Links Market is running just as it always did - every year in April!
DH's 'stamping ground' was Leven, rascal......(I don't ask him too much about those days)! winkgrin
