Sounds good to me.

janeainsworth Thu 05-Jun-14 18:12:36

How about Newcastle or somewhere in Tyne Valley last week of June?

Soutra Thu 05-Jun-14 18:11:03

Stansgran I said "slovenly or slang " not slovenly slang. I think most of us would have little difficuty in recognising slovenly speech - see all the column inches in Pedants' Corner for people's pet hates! Slang is much more transient- yesterday's "cool" becomes today's "wicked" and again most of us would have little difficulty in knowing when it would be appropriate or not to use slang expressions. "We was" or "myself and she " or "I brought" for" I bought" might be seen as poor use of language but do not please accuse me of prejudice againat dialect or local accents!
And silverfish of course I had a career but it was my ability to speak French or German that was relevant - not my English!!

glassortwo Thu 05-Jun-14 17:54:47

Ha ha jane why did I feel that coming on grin

Right need suggestions of suitable dates from everyone.

janeainsworth Thu 05-Jun-14 17:39:56

Hello Hilda and welcome if you've just joined. I see from your profile you live in Haltwhistle - that must be a lovely place to live, I think.
I hope to meet you at some stage when Glassortwo gets round to organising something
<Hint! Hint!>
grin

Hello all I live in Northumberland too. Not very far from Hexham and Hadrians Wall. It's lovely around here but rains a lot.

Anyone who can say 'I would never work for anyone who obliged me to affect any sort of modification of how I speak' Is very lucky, but don't we all have to change something when we work for an employer.

If we work in a callcentre we have to modify our accents or the customers would not understand it.

Its the same with dress, if we work in an office we are expected to dress to 'dress code' clothes.

wherever we work we have to behave according to rules and codes of conduct to fit in with our jobs so its no different to speaking a little more refined when perhaps we are meeting an important client or customer.

Soutra is perhaps implying that she does not need to work, Good luck to her but some of us have to things we might not like to earn a crust.

Stansgran Thu 05-Jun-14 10:52:57

Ah but who decides which is slovenly slang and which is slovenly speech? And which is dialect? Wouldn't like to be on that panel.

Soutra Wed 04-Jun-14 19:15:23

I think it was silverfish who implied there are posh people in the north east. I merely opined that I would never have worked for anyone who obliged me to affect any sort of modification of how I speak. Dialects are part of the richness of language which we should celebrate but by dialect I don't mean slovenly or slang forms of speech.

Stansgran shock harri shakes blue rinse and fingers pearls nervously.

Stansgran Wed 04-Jun-14 11:28:59

Soutra You mean there are terribly posh people up here[alarmed emoticon]

Silverfish Wed 04-Jun-14 09:41:38

Soutra, you may be lucky enough to have or have had the choice in employers. I don't so I have to be all things to all people. Some people I meet are terribly posh so I have to speak reasonably, other people I work with could not care less so I am less formal with them. Its just an act to me and I get paid for it.

Soutra Mon 02-Jun-14 22:30:06

Rather like Groucho Marx said he wouldnt want to belong to any club that would have him , I wouldn't work for anyone who needed impressing by "talking proper " !! shock!

gillybob Mon 02-Jun-14 22:02:09

Yes we do jane smile

janeainsworth Mon 02-Jun-14 21:01:27

Well you don't need to try and impress us if you come to the meet-up Silverfish, we just take people as we find them wink

Silverfish Mon 02-Jun-14 20:56:42

Tegan, we don't say 'oop north', that's a Yorkshire dialect.
We don't emphasise the 'o' s in our accent.

We say things like; 'Ahm a Geordie lass, whey aye man'. Or 'Me Daa was doon the pit'.

I say things like ' Bliddy Nora, aam cheesed off the day man'.

Having said that I do try to 'lose' my accent as it sounds so common when Im at work and you don't impress your bosses by sounding common.

ayse Mon 02-Jun-14 12:21:54

I'm interested too. We have no firm plans at the moment but will probably be away at the beginning of July - last minute break and not sure to where smile

janeainsworth Mon 02-Jun-14 10:09:20

Yes I'm interested Glass
I'll be away 1st week of July, and then going away beginning September, but apart from that generally available to lunch with like-minded ladies wink

I was born and grew up on the NE coast - Blyth. My parents lived there until 2002, I still visit sometimes.
And Rothbury - a lovely little town, I stayed there for a few months, evacuated during WW2. Great adventures near the River Coquet.
I miss the sea so much!

glassortwo Sun 01-Jun-14 13:32:56
