Inveraray 28 August

Just back from meeting soop in Lochgilphead. She loves the idea of a lunch meetup at The George Hotel in Inveraray on Friday 28 August.

Some people may want to make it an overnighter. dunit is investigating various accommodations so get onto her if you need ideas.

marmight tentatively offered lifts to people on the Fife and Edinburgh side, and I can offer lifts from Helensburgh Railway Station if westerners (well, anyone, in fact!) can get themselves to there by mid-morning, say ten/ten-thirty.

Let's go for it. Send names!

Just received an e.mail from Scotrail (abellio) regarding Club 50 travel throughout Scotland. If you sign up now you can get a return trip anywhere in Scotland for £10.00. Good deal even if only using for a trip to the West
( Inverary visit ! ) as that is a good saving on the normal fare.

Great minds think alike! (but fools seldom differ)

haha! x posts!

Hope you can make the next Inveraray or Western meetup, dunit.

Meanwhile I've been thinking further about elegran's suggestion that we combine the August trip with a visit to the beaver project at Knapdale. It's about three-quarters of an hour to an hour's drive away from Inveraray and the tours start at six so it is do-able on the same day as a lunchtime meetup.

Unless the weather is absolutely atrocious, I think elegran and I will go. I'll have at least two other seats in the car (depends whether it's a proper car or the Rattletrap, which latter will take seven passengers bumpily!). I have a couple of spare head midge nets should they be needed. One is promised to elegran already.

Also have industrial strength (what the military use) anti-midge lotion.

Anyone else wanna come and look at beavers?

Elegran Fri 03-Jul-15 13:20:18

Thatbags and I have resuscitated the idea of driving up to Knapdale to see the beavers while we are in Inverary. It is a 45 min drive, and the guided tour is at 6 pm, so we could go up in the afternoon (4.30ish?) and get back for a latish meal. thatbags plans to go home, but I will be staying somewhere. Is anyone else interested?

No cafe or loos, so we would need to take a drink with us, and any snacks, and have a comfort stop en route (or bring the shewees).

Sorry thatbags you are correct it was 28th I have 24th in my mind because that's when family are travelling over and are here for 10 days. Not suggesting date change at all as I know original date suits soop As Elegran says we can have a day trip here on another date also.

Jane10 Mon 29-Jun-15 20:40:52

Thank goodness no bunkhouse!! Where would count as not so far west? Trains to Glasgow all to pot these days. The train I had to take last week went via about 10 places I'd never heard of! Rail disruption apparently to be over by end of July

Elegran Mon 29-Jun-15 20:27:33

Yes, we are not tied to doing only the Inverary one.

thatbags Mon 29-Jun-15 20:00:53

Just thinking that we could always do another not quite so far west one on a date dunit can manage and somewhere not requiring jane10 to sleep in a bunkhouse wink

thatbags Mon 29-Jun-15 19:58:59

Are you unable to do 28 August too, dunit? That was the date I put in the thread title and the one I told soop about back in May. The thing about Inverary was that several people wanted to see soop again and she can manage to get there allright.

I'll go and look at your new thread now.

BiNtHeReDuNiT14 Mon 29-Jun-15 19:52:20

At last meetup in Edinburgh we made a provisional date for meetup in the West. That date was 24th August, I can't make that date due to family now planning to visit at that time but happy to still organise trip. Would anyone interested let me know if this date still suits the majority or if we have to think of a different one. I know a couple of people would like to stay over J10 particularly keen on staying in bunkhouse (isn't that right J10) and we can geta gazunder for Marmight for her en.suite. JUST KIDDING. Need to know if still interested and how many, if any, would want to stay in Inverary. 'thatbags' has already stated that she would be prepared to give a lift to the railway station to anyone wanting to return to Edinburgh.

(Sorry had forgotten there was already a thread for this and had started a new one, will now go and delete the new one)

Elegran Mon 29-Jun-15 19:37:49

Dunit has started a new thread to say that she can't come on that date and about staying-over plans. I think it is at www.gransnet.com/forums/other_subjects/1217078-Meetup

I'll go back there and post linking it up to this one which has the names and so on.

Bump

thatbags Mon 18-May-15 08:57:31

That's what I'm thinking too, elegran!

Elegran Mon 18-May-15 08:36:23

Shall we postpone the beavers, then, thatbags and think about it at a future date? It would be another excuse to meet again in the west!

thatbags Mon 18-May-15 07:32:47

elegran, I've looked up the distance to the Knapdale Beaver Trial and, by the shorter of two routes (the main route via Lochgilphead), it would take approximately 45 minutes from Inveraray. In principle I'd be very happy to drive some grans there.

My reservation about visiting in late August is that the midges at 6pm will be hellish! I'm probably the only one who has a midge jacket. What I would contemplate with much more equanimity is a trip there out of midge season.

thatbags Sun 17-May-15 08:06:00

Shall do, katek. Hope you can manage it.

Katek Sat 16-May-15 23:57:50

I'd love to come, but would need to check out all the transport ramifications for travel from the north. Can you pit me down as a maybe?

soop Sat 16-May-15 13:20:25

I'm all excitipated. grin

Jane10 Fri 15-May-15 20:43:07

I can't manage that date but am also scared of potential bunkhouse stay!

Elizabeth1 Fri 15-May-15 20:17:45

Sorry I'm not going to manage the visit to Inveraray as the month of August is when all and sundry visit this grannies homeland. Our grandchildren from North of the border come for a fortnight and we also have other family visitors dropping in throughout the month. I hope you all have a smashing time and I'll look forward to hearing how you enjoy this time together. sunshine

thatbags Fri 15-May-15 19:34:08

Righty-ho. That's seven definites and one maybe so far. There's plenty of time for other people to decide. I just thought I'd get this thread started while it was hot off the block.

I've registered your idea, elegran. I'll look into it further...

Marelli Fri 15-May-15 18:43:30

Sorry - haven't been looking at the threads properly! Yes, I'm up for it, too - count me in, please! smile
