I'm a blow-in. Well, actually a blow-back because I did a decade and a half in my earlier life.
But Londoner by birth.
Devon is Heaven. ☀️ 🌊 ♥️

Born in Ilfracombe and don’t live far away from that now…

CariadAgain Sun 18-Jan-26 13:53:28

I see - whoops...meet-up....now I'm living in Wales these days that would be too far for me to go.

Ashcombe Sun 18-Jan-26 17:33:37

I'm not from Devon originally but I've lived in Torquay since 2011 when I retired and wouldn't live anywhere else on a permanent basis although I often visit France where DH lives.

Hello! Good to meet you 😊
Nowt wrong with London (my father was a Londoner). My younger daughter worked up there for a number of years.
But, yes, Devon is Heaven (but it rains 8 days out of 7) 😉

Yes, I get that. Best wishes from south Devon, regardless. 😊

Lived in Exeter years ago. Beautiful area. Many happy memories of visiting lots of surrounding countryside.

Errrm...try West Wales - re rain and wind.

We get rain in Devon - but I don't recall it ever putting me off going out when I'd decided to do so.

Here - I've long since lost count of how often I decide to go out, then take a look outside at the weather and change my mind or book a taxi. This morning was one of those "change my mind" days - but I had to battle the weather, as I had a hairdresser appointment. Now I'm here I can understand why the Welsh seem to "cwtch" up indoors sometimes (ie cosy up) - though I can tell I'm always going to resent weather changing my plans I'm afraid. Downside time....

Sad recent news - another town in effect going to be built - over 1,000 homes as I recall soon. Between Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton - sort of going on up from Woodbury Common area !!! There's a lot of opposition to it - as you can imagine...

Lived between Exeter and Sidmouth many years ago and loved it.Don't like the idea of a new town swallowing up Woodbury Common.

I'm in south Devon and hate it. If I could persuade DH to move I'd do it tomorrow. After 40 years of marriage I'm thinking of divorce to get out of here.

Yertiz Tue 20-Jan-26 14:10:07

Yes, East Devon. Never lived anywhere else or wanted to.

Yes, it's a shame, especially the amount of traffic that one small road has to cope with. The folk of Budleigh have been out protesting about the hew town because the town won't cope - school, doctors etc.

But the area is still beautiful. I walk on Woodbury and Aylesbeare common most days with the dogs and come across lots of wildlife, including deer and ponies.
Then the sea is only 10 minutes away for more fresh air (and a coffee).

Do we REALLY need all these new houses? I don’t know anyone who can’t find a house for sale. On the other hand, the new developments seem to fill up quickly. I just wonder where everyone is coming from?

henetha Tue 20-Jan-26 16:04:34

I'm Devonshire born and bred. Lived in Torquay for fifty years, now I'm in the countryside near Dartmoor.
I love Devon. Wouldn't live anywhere else.

MartavTaurus Tue 20-Jan-26 16:07:35

Nope we certainly don't, Gran22boys particularly in the area mentioned above. The average house price in the Budleigh area is £502,00 so it's unlikely those starting out will be able to afford these properties.
We need more carers and hospitality staff in the area due to the growing ageing population, but they can't find suitable housing.

Errrm....there's an answer to that - ie WE don't need all those new houses ourselves - but our population is still growing, despite the fact we are having less than replacement level number of children.

So the only reason we ourselves need them basically is because a higher proportion of households are single people households than used to be the case - ie the woman in line before me was my mother and she shared a house with her husband (my father) - but then it came to me and I was looking for Mr Right (and not "a husband one way or another") and so I needed a house and Mr Right (if he existed) also needed a house. Add people are basically (until 2019 anyway) living longer than they did...

Yes, I saw that. I would be protesting with them.

Well that's interesting. I'm not allowed to hate where I live. That's fascinating.
