Saying what's available in a whole county is not the same as what is available in a city.
Shame you're not in East Devon. I'm not in a city either, quite the opposite, but I'm about 10 miles from ALL the things mentioned.

But you do realise that doesn't represent the whole of Devon. I honestly don't know a museum in Devon that compares to museums like any of the multiple museums in London for example.

Neither does ours!! It is interesting but you'd get round it in an hour or two.
I doubt any do outside very large cities.

Perhaps he wants a meet-up?

Depends on which part of Devon, it's a very large County where it rains six days out of seven
(Sorry)

Mind you, it seems to rain here seven days out of seven.

Darts Farm is the nicest/biggest farm shop I've been to personally and was a plus side to me. Re Michael Caines and Lympstone and I checked out that place one time when I wanted to go back on a "home visit" and, as I recall, it was around £400 per night to stay there!!!! Cue for me changing my mind and deciding to stay elsewhere at around £100 per night. Though I'm obviously (I would have thought) not from a bad background (even if you don't hear my accentless voice) I'd got visions of maybe having someone "look down their nose" at me mentally willing me out of the door - it's only happened a few times (ie in posh London hotels the boyfriend of the time was paying for way back when and only a couple of times back in Devon) I didn't want to risk those sort of "looks" - as I've not figured out appropriate response to them yet.

I've not forgotten when Princesshay Shopping Centre in Exeter got replaced and so I was there having my look-around the shops to check them out when they opened. Cue for a man the other side of the shop loudly making comments to the shop assistant about "The locals coming in here....!!!!!" in a tone of disapproval. Thanks a lot mate - as I was the only one in the shop at the time - but I had no intention of paying £900 (over 10 years ago) for an "occasion coat - once seen/never forgotten" anyway. Some of the clothes in those shops were rather dear just after they opened.

Your point being?
Yo do know that "no one can make you feel inferior without your consent" don't you?
Are you implying snobbery is endemic in Devon or just poor customer service?

Darts Farm is OK but not exactly a top restaurant. maybe you're referring to the Yard Table or the café at Darts? Here is a summary of the newish top notch Farm Table restaurant awards. I've eaten there on occasions.

Recognised as one of the top places to eat near Exeter, our menu showcases fresh, seasonal and local Devon produce for a real farm-to-table dining experience.

Yes, but now everyone knows a jolly good eating place in Devon! grin

Darts Farm and the Exe Estuary was on Countryfile last Sunday. Good episode to catch.

If you refer to Hugh FWs restaurant I don't think Darts Farm springs to mind. It is possible for other restaurants to win prizes doesn't mean they're his restaurant.

I can confirm heavy rain at the moment and strong winds here. I'm sure the sun is shining in other parts of the county.

I was cooking with half an eye on it.
Must sit down and watch it properly.

We don't get down there often now, unfortunately.

Allira re the museums, that's why I want a big city.

Yes, wet here too.

Well if I wanted to split hairs, River Cottage is about 20 minutes in the other direction to me. Yes, I've been there too and DH goes on cookery courses. He also had a restsurant in the middle if Axminster near the church, but I think he closed that. So thankfully I'm in the middle of top restaurants.

No wonder you turned back. I dont have to worry about flooding as I live at the top of a hill but still get the rain and as no tall buildings between us and the beach a mile away we do get blown about on windy days. It's howling at the moment and I've got to go for a blood test. Thankfully not far away.

RosiesMawagain Wed 21-Jan-26 13:33:30

I really liked that restaurant in Axminster - and the shop with it!
Sad it closed down, it was the sort of eatery that suited the whole family- from Granny (me) down to the tinies!

Flumps70 Wed 21-Jan-26 13:36:59

Yes ii come from Exmouth

amazonia Wed 21-Jan-26 13:42:33

Been here nearly 40 years. Married a proper local who's farming roots go back at least 400 years. We're on Exmoor so it really does rain a lot! Missed the cultural life when I arrived but wouldn't live anywhere else now. 2 out 3 children have remained local.

Iwtwab12bow Wed 21-Jan-26 13:49:35

We moved from London to Somerset, then Somerset to Brixham, loved every day. Unfortunately my husband's ambition took us to another county. Our daughter still misses devon.

namo Wed 21-Jan-26 13:57:05

I lived in North Devon for thirty years near South Molton. Loved it. Worked locally with some lovely people. Weekends could go up on the moors, or take the train from Umberleigh to Exeter or bus into Barnstaple, or go to beaches like Woollacombe. Best days of my life.

Wet here too - not Devon!

When we moved from Devon to the SE I expected drier weather, more sunshine.
Well, it rained and rained solidly for weeks, atrocious weather.

That's Britain for you 😀

Burrator Reservoir last year - less than 50% capacity after the heatwave.

Perhaps you'll remember the picture I posted of our Waitrose (not Devon).
The cafe is still shut for the time being.
