The Daily Mail going on about his dad like that. sad

I really hate the Daily Mail. The country would be so much better off without it.

hope you're right When, that Ed is finally finding his Mojo. I heard him speak during the leadership process, and liked what he said, and how he said it. Simon Hoggart in last week's Guardian commented that if you saw his conference speech on tv you'd probably see a rather geeky man shouting - whereas if you were in the hall for the speech, it was electrifying. (or words to that effect).
Gnan, I read the Daily Hate on line as well. This, after castigating daughter 2 for doing so. I read other papers on line as well, but feel slightly guilty for 'supporting' the mail on line. Its apparently the most read on line. The comments under its articles are often critical of the paper's line on women, benefit cheats etc. Thankfully.

Not a well timed row for DC's speech today - land of opportunity!

Riverwalk Wed 02-Oct-13 09:31:02

The DM article was shameful but let's not get too sentimental about poor Ed in his defence of his father's legacy - this is a man who stabbed his own brother in the back in a breathtaking grab for power.

The mail has now reached 'rock bottom and still drilling' . Yet it pleases many in this country !

Janeainsworth, Ed Milliband did not destroy his brothers political career.

My God! That Newsnight video was a bit hard to watch! I actually felt sorry for the Daily Mail bloke!

One thing though. They are making something of the fact that the diary entry was written when Miliband' s dad was only seventeen, and yet they want to bring down the voting age to sixteen. That is a bit confusing.

j08 Wed 02-Oct-13 09:42:04

Yes iam 64. The comments under many of the DM articles are refreshing to read.

whenim64 Wed 02-Oct-13 10:05:49

That's a good point, Jingle. A 17 year old who has fled the trauma of persecution, and records in his diary his current viewpoint. Does this undermine the campaign to bring down voting age to 16? Thinking about it, I don't think it does - we all have the right to change our minds over time, and as our political awareness develops.

janeainsworth Wed 02-Oct-13 10:24:56

Anniebach you are of course entitled to your opinion, but I agree with Riverwalk and I think the question of what would have happened if David had succeeded Gordon Brown instead of Ed will be one of the big 'What if's that future commentators will debate.

Jendurham Wed 02-Oct-13 10:43:28

As would the question of what if Tony Benn had been elected as leader, and what would have happened if John Smith hadn't died when he did.
Any DM readers on here, could you ask it to do a similar job on Cameron's dad, who made his money out of off-shore tax havens and setting up schemes so others could do the same.

Anniebach Wed 02-Oct-13 10:50:58

Janeainsworths, It isn't my opinion it is fact , David Milliband had no right of succession to lead the party, he put his name forward for election as did others, where was the back stabbing? The fact there were two brothers standing for leadership is unusual but both were members of the party and so both were equal in their right to stand for party leader. Do you think that Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper should never stand for leadership in the same contest because they are married.?

Surely the elder brother taking precedence over the younger brother is something we leave to the aristocracy , certaintly not in a political party

If you had two sons running in a school race would you berate one son for winning thus causing the other brother to lose?

Riverwalk Wed 02-Oct-13 10:56:33

I certainly think that a married couple should never stand for leadership in the same contest! shock

bluebell Wed 02-Oct-13 10:59:33

Jen grin

bluebell Wed 02-Oct-13 11:01:06

On a more serious note Jen deep down in its heart and soul , the DM believes in tax havens and rich people not having to pay taxes

Greatnan Wed 02-Oct-13 11:02:01

Whenever some of us have criticised the DM in the past, some members have flown to its defence. Perhaps they are all on holiday.

Anniebach Wed 02-Oct-13 11:05:01

Then who should stand back riverbank, the man or the woman? Mmmmm

JessM Wed 02-Oct-13 11:10:49

There are three Belgian runners, twins and another brother. They often compete in races. Nobody tries to make a melodrama out of it Then there are the Williams sisters.

Riverwalk Wed 02-Oct-13 11:16:50

Annie in the case of Balls & Cooper I'd say both of them - neither would be up to the job!

Anniebach Wed 02-Oct-13 11:19:21

Just so JessM,

Riverwalk Wed 02-Oct-13 11:20:17

Jess confused competing athletes?

Anniebach Wed 02-Oct-13 11:35:21

But if you thought both were 'up to the job' riverwalk which should stand back ? Husband or Wife

I think it wrong that Ed Milliband is accused of stabbing his brother in the back, should David have stood back to give his brother a clear run? No, they are there for the party not family

Riverwalk Wed 02-Oct-13 11:55:26

Annie I just can't imagine a scenario where a married couple, both MPs, would have such political differences that they would feel that they both had something so different to offer their party that they would have to stand against each other. Not talking about standing for election to the golf club committee or neighbourhood watch here, but a major political party.

Can you imagine Hillary Clinton standing against against Bill - it just wouldn't happen!

Of course David Miliband had no right to inherit the party leadership, but I found it quite extraordinary that his brother, older or younger it makes no difference, to whom he was close, stood against him.

JessM Wed 02-Oct-13 12:22:32

They both stood. Ed as much right to stand as David, even though David a little more high profile. I am not getting the outrage.

j08 Wed 02-Oct-13 12:45:56

Anniebach! Get the smileys sorted! grin

First square bracket. Then the word 'smile' in lower case. Then the other square bracket. Voila! smile

Anniebach Wed 02-Oct-13 12:50:24

smile

Anniebach Wed 02-Oct-13 12:52:11

So that's how it's done, thank you j08, i didn't like to ask
