I am so angry, frustrated and sad. What can we do to help this poor, beautiful young woman?

Why is the world Muslim community not speaking out?

I thought that was precisely the point Lilygran was making confused
Where's the flaw?

Mishap Thu 05-Jun-14 10:09:30

Yes - I do believe that religions are human constructs. If that were not the case, there would not be such a variety of religions, each reflecting the culture and time from which they have emerged.

To say this is not to denigrate the importance of the role of religion in human existence, both for good and for bad.

Lilygran Thu 05-Jun-14 10:52:31

anno that's the point I'm making. It isn't the flaws in a particular religion causing the problem, it's the flaws in the human beings who interpret it - or create it, in atheist terms. In the case of oppression and exploitation of women, it doesn't seem to matter what religion or non-religion the perpetrators embrace. It happens and has happened everywhere and there is a dreary sameness about the form it takes. So by concentrating on religion, we move the debate away from the main issue.

When I look at a rainbow, I 'see' colours
1).... Those colours don't actually exist, they are interpretations of certain wavelengths of light by my optical system - a natural basic function of human brains.
2).....There is evidence to suggest that whilst we in UK 'see' ROYGBIV others in other societies 'see' different colours.
3).....Some societies have colour words for a range of colours that others can't even 'see', never mind have words for them.
4).....There are assertions that belief in 'religion' is a natural basic function of human brains.

It is great news but I won't be happy until I hear she is out of the country with her husband. I hope the pressure is kept up so that she doesn't just 'disappear' and fall off the radar.

Purpledaffodil Tue 24-Jun-14 10:28:24

Sense, justice and lots of international media exposure has prevailedsmile

sunseeker Tue 24-Jun-14 15:52:39

BBC news has said she and her husband and children have been arrested at the airport for trying to leave the country.

Ana Tue 24-Jun-14 15:58:20

Oh dear, I thought it was too much to believe they'd be left in peace...

sunseeker Wed 25-Jun-14 09:38:54

She has now been charged with fraud and is banned from leaving the country. It appears the Sudanese are saying she should have used the Muslim name she was born with and not the Christian name she is now known by. It appears this poor woman's plight is not yet over.

sunseeker Wed 25-Jun-14 13:02:58

Have to say I am surprised that no-one has commented on this. She is still in danger and will be until she is safely out of the country

Ana Wed 25-Jun-14 13:14:13

According to the Independent today, she was released again last night. I think all we can do is await further news.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 25-Jun-14 13:22:15

Oh - sorry Sunseeker! Good job you did it for us. hmm

sunseeker Wed 25-Jun-14 13:34:54

Sorry jingl I'll let you get back to the very important comments regarding the Queen visiting a film set hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 25-Jun-14 14:40:28

So Gransnet must be restricted to heavy stuff only?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 25-Jun-14 14:41:16

Enjoy!

sunseeker Wed 25-Jun-14 14:42:36

No but if you are not interested in the "heavy stuff" then don't comment on it

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 25-Jun-14 14:59:50

I will ignore that silly comment.

sunseeker Wed 25-Jun-14 15:00:37

What a relief

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 25-Jun-14 15:02:39

shock My God! What brought this on?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 25-Jun-14 15:03:46
