Should you vote tactically?

I think that sometimes there is nothing else to do under this first past the post system.

I cannot vote Tory as their policies so not sit well with me;and in my constituency the Lib Dems were a credible alternative (but I do not think they continue to be as their role in the coalition has been so unpopular); Labour don't stand a chance here and never have. Nothing I do will stop the Tory candidate getting in, so I think I might vote green. The tactical vote would have been Lib Dem, but no longer.

I see, pompa. I think I misunderstood your use of the verb "like". My approach is similar to yours.

An extremely intersting article about austerity.

www.theguardian.com/business/ng-interactive/2015/apr/29/the-austerity-delusion

It's also a long article.

durhamjen Wed 29-Apr-15 20:20:11

Interesting, I mean. Not sure what intersting means.

Ana Wed 29-Apr-15 20:29:06

I'm very tempted...but I will show restraint.

durhamjen Wed 29-Apr-15 20:32:31

It means I forgot to read my post before posting.
Or were you saying you were very tempted to read the article?

Ana Wed 29-Apr-15 20:38:36

Heaven forbid! grin

durhamjen Wed 29-Apr-15 20:43:15

It is a lot to read, Ana.

Though I do not agree with his party's overall vision I will vote for my local MP because he seems to have a genuine interest in his constituency. I have had reason to contact him in the past and he has always helped so he deserves my vote!

Vote NHA if you can and want to vote tactically. They hope to have more MPs than the green party.

We have Labour saying vote for them or the SNP will allow the Tory blighters in. The Tories saying vote for them or Labour will get in. Both parties demonizing the Scots they were so desperate to keep in September totally terrified we might have a say. Vote Labour/conservative to stop the Scottish tail wagging the English dog is an actual quote. We were loved a wanted by the Westminster lot right up to the point they realised we had not gone quietly back into our box.

thatbags Fri 01-May-15 07:19:50

A variation on what seasider said. Our current MP is a good MP so I'm going to vote for him even though his Party is not the one I've historically supported. Better the devil you know....

No-one I've ever voted for in a general election has ever won. Just saying, bye the bye.

etheltbags1 Mon 04-May-15 23:56:50

I voted by post last week and used a pin as I said I would so I cant remember who it was that got my cross. I am soooo fed up with the wrangling that I just don't care anymore. sorry if this offends anyone.

FarNorth Tue 05-May-15 00:00:28

Why bother telling us about it, if you care so little about the future of your country?

etheltbags1 Tue 05-May-15 00:09:03

farnorth, I just happen to think that whatever I vote it wouldn't make any difference. I told you all about it because I wanted to make a contrast to everyone having an opinion and I always said I would vote for the party that never makes a disparaging remark about the others.
As none of them do this I just stuck a pin in, after all the vote is a 'right' not a compulsion and many people deliberately spoil their voting paper, at least I did not do that. I will support whoever gets in.

thatbags Tue 05-May-15 06:22:10

I think the idea is that an MP supports his or her constituents, ethelt, not the other way round. What was your previous MP like? It seems you didn't like him/her or their politics well enough to 'support' them by voting them back in? I'd find that quite a useful political indicator myself.

soontobe Tue 05-May-15 07:55:52

I think that if you are poorly, as ethel is, that makes a difference.

Also, is the banner of which party going to make that much difference this time around? Not sure.

soontobe Tue 05-May-15 07:57:21

Especially if there is a hung parliament.

I am going to take back what I have written about which party/banner. I dont think it will affect me much, but I cant speak for others.

The Tory supporters have been told to vote tactically so take a lesson from that and do the same. I certainly would.

Iam64 Tue 05-May-15 19:12:35

It seems tory tactical voting with ensure that Nick Clegg holds on to his seat in Sheffield. I understand why the tories would do this - but I so wish they wouldn't grin

durhamjen Tue 05-May-15 22:09:27

In yesterday's poll, Labour were still 1% ahead in Sheffield Hallam, Iam64.

Iam64 Wed 06-May-15 07:42:19

That's good news durhamjen - I was in a minority 5 years ago in being very unimpressed by Nick. My feeling now is he'd sell his soul to the devil if it meant he could remain in power.
Yes, I know people drawn to politics/positions of real power need to be driven, self absorbed and certain of their own decision making. It doesn't mean they're all prepared to shift allegiance at the drop of a hat does it.

GrannyTwice Wed 06-May-15 07:58:00

I can't believe the game NC is now playing. I often vote Libdem locally for all the usual reasons but not anymore. What do they stand for?

GrannyTwice Wed 06-May-15 07:59:57

Dj what's that link again for time of declarations please? What time is Shefield H declaring ( unless recounts!)
